We had Freddie Ladapo's brother on trial yesterday who played on both wings, scored a goal and seemingly impressed.

I think there's a solid enough L2 CB in Maher, he just didn't have a good seaaon last season. In his defence the whole back four was shambolic for large patches of when he played last season. He was really good alongside both Waterfall and Smith the season before. Think he only played once after we switched to a five at the back and looked more solid last season, I think had he played in that system, he would have done better and might not have been released. Certainly wouldn't be a bad signing for Bradford.
Maher was to blame for Guiseley's first goal against us yesterday, no thanks from me.

Tough being a CB on trial. Shame that, he's an improvement on that absolute banter CB you had last season.

I don’t know which ‘banter CB’ you’re referring too, but whoever he is, he was apart of the 5th best defence in the league (3rd best the season before last).

Oi! We've signed one of those CBs to be one of my main men at the back to hopefully tighten things up :err:

He's alright but wouldn't be a player to recruit for a team 'going for it' or even play-offs imo . Has a couple of obvious flaws for a CB - concentration & positioning . Alright for anyone wanting to finish lower to mid table probably though on his day .

Had to look him up but it was Ash Taylor who I was referring to.

That fella has a great agent. Cutting about in Gibraltar these days. Scored on his debut in UEFA Conference League t’other night.

Morecambe feature 3 Rovers old boys amongst their new glut of signings after the embargo lifted.

George Ray was iffy for us, seemed to do ok at Barrow
Paul Lewis probably had his best spell at Rovers as a makeshift forward under Keith Hill. Doesn't have the creativity or positional sense to be an attacking midfielder and his tackling is wild on a good day.
Ben Tollitt never really recovered from his first injury with us in non-league. Has had and not made the most of other opportunities since. I'd like to see him do well but not hopeful.

Any thought on Declan Drysdale, Newport and Gillingham fans?

He was a triallist for Rovers yesterday, having first being one of the kids that played well in the 0-1 NL league season ender win at Maidstone back in 2017, when Mellon was trying to protect any more of the depleted first team picking up injuries ahead of the play-offs. Wouldn't sign an new deal and eventually moved on to Coventry, but his career doesn't seem to have been stellar since.

It's clear from Nigel Adkins first pre-season interview that he was frustrated a few players Rovers had been after opted to hang on in the hope of something better turning up. We're looking particularly thin in defensive cover. While I'd still expect another higher quality defensive recruit to put the regulars under pressure for a first team spot, is Drysdale capable of being a decent squad play who could do a decent job if called on?

Carlisle are not doing trialists this year. Must be the first time ever we haven’t had any in for preseason.

A stark contrast from a few years ago when we were holding open anyone can bring their boots trials. Trying to find players on the cheap to fit into our conference north budget.

Showed very little with us as a youngster, didn't seem to have a particularly useful skillset. Not much pace, not much defensive awareness or positioning. We actually played against him in the League Cup a week before we signed him on loan, and in the cup game he was noticeably bad - kept trying to play out from the back and was dreadful at it.

Might've improved I suppose...!

That day was funny, you had open trials down at Brunson Park and just down the road you had Carver on trial at Carlisle crown court.

If you wanted a no frills old school centre half who will win more than his fair share of headers at the back, then Matty Platt will do fine for you.

The only mystery is that he should be looking to score more goals from set pieces. I believe he only scored 1, maybe 2 at most for us in 2 seasons.

Trialists strategy certainly screams out trying to do recruitment on the cheap.

I don't think we had any previous 2 summers, but have had 3 very underwhelming ones in our first 2 friendlies

Tolitt is finished unfortunately. Non league is his level now so really surprised to see him get a L2, team.

From the limited times he played for us he looked a man with not much pace, not much confidence and the heart the size of a peanut. He just never got going for us with injuries and a complete absence of anything resembling a L2 footballer.

It seems like we're back fishing in the shit-pool with these latest trialists. None of them are anywhere near good enough for us.

Couple of tenuous rumours on Twitter that Alex Iacovitti might be on his way out to St Mirren. Now down the pecking order especially after the Hall signing so would make sense if he did go and we do need to trim the squad down a bit.

Paton didn’t play for Queens Park on Saturday and their manager confirmed after that a bid had been accepted so seems like that might be happening (unless someone gazumps us after all this).

£150k agreed and three year deal for Paton apparently with Yak off to St Mirren. Keeps the trim down in the squad I guess.

Ruari Paton confirmed, 3 year deal believed to be 150k initial fee.

Worth a punt especially with Stockley and Tolaj already in. Going to be interesting to see how we keep our four strikers happy mind!
