Hard to know how the Scottish Championship measures up to L2 as to how much of a step up or whatever but scored lots of goals so worth a throw of the dice. It’s certainly a better situation up front than what we had this time last year.

We’ve got our old youth player, Will Randall, back in trial.

Always felt a bit sorry for him, had a small car crash in preseason last year as well as a few small niggles, which is pretty costly when he was looking to compete with Jodi Jones for minutes - and he just never got going, on the rare occasion he played he didn’t look remotely sharp enough but then never really had the chance to play his way into match fitness either

Carver you might be interested in this one bud but I’ve heard Carlisle are very close to signing highly rated Italian winger Cevere Lacovabiliti subject to international clearance.

Ruari Paton confirmed, 3 year deal believed to be 150k initial fee.

Worth a punt especially with Stockley and Tolaj already in. Going to be interesting to see how we keep our four strikers happy mind!
Got to be the first time blowing/spending 150 grand has been described as a ‘punt’ round Burslem way.

How times have changed in L2 when a £150k signing is considered a punt!

We've sent players on loan in that division, two last season, and they've just signed for Bromley and Drogheda (bottom of the LOI) so the standard isn't that high. The LOI seems a higher standard on average but that's probably skewed a bit by two or three of the top sides as well.

Well we spent roughly that on Loft so would rather try it this way but what I mean is if he didn’t work out we have cover in Jayden Stockley who’s proven and Tolaj who’s done it one level down plus Dipepa who’s obviously come through and has big potential so we are not relying on him coming in and smashing 20 goals or we are screwed for instance.

He’s had a lot of interest, seems highly thought of so why not give him a go. If it works then it’s potentially got a high reward for us.

We’ve completely replaced our strike force from one which has seen three leave who scored 5-6 league goals between them to three that scored almost 60 last season which is pretty mental.

Challenge though is making it work in terms of how we utilise them and keep them all happy.

You’d assume all three have come with the expectation of game time plus Dipepa who would expect now to push on after all the massive hype and links to top clubs so it’s not going to be easy.

We’ve got two goalies who will expect to be number one, and some very good midfielders that can’t all play at the same time.

Still think we need work on the defence mind. Micheal Hector would be nice! But think we lack cover at RB, LB and a centre half.

Whilst this window has probably been the best on paper in my time following us Moore has to get it right, as we’ve seen of late, having good individuals on paper is one thing but making it work well is another on the pitch.

Yes, this is definitely a boom or bust signing. He seems to have all the credentials but the standard he has played at is poor. He also seems to have a great attitude based on his first interview. A rags to riches type back story.

If it doesn't go well, at least we have decent options rather than Loft and Uche.

As others have said though, it's all very well splashing a few quid but getting them to play together is a different matter. It worked for Wrexham but it hasn't worked for teams like Bradford, Mansfield and Salford who all have big budgets for this level.

It’s a risky one, quite a few clubs including a couple in L1 decided the cost outweighed the risk with Paton, could go either way and I hope it goes well for Vale.

I think £150k is lowballing it, he’d have ended up elsewhere at that price IMO.

Junior Tiensia, Barra fans?

We are in desperate need of a defender after losing Aimson, Jules and Hartridge

Two words - Darren Moore.

Simple as that. Every single interview from the new signings has emphasised just how much of a pull Moore was in bringing them to the club. Apparently, a few other clubs gave him the impression they were taking a punt on him. Whereas, we made it clear we'd targeted him and actually wanted him at the club and didn't see it as a gamble.

Players always say that. Some managers do genuinely have pull, but I find it hard to believe Moore is one of them, players follow the money usually and rightly so.

We've also offered three year deals to players which is also a sign that we want them more than others.

Players don't always say that though. I could find tons of interviews from previous seasons where it hasn't been said.

Why do you think we've signed George Byers, who would be one of the best players in League One, let alone League Two? Because of his relationship with Darren Moore.

Hardly attracting them with the delights of fucking Burslem, are we? Although, who couldn't turn down oatcakes?

Moore could well be gone before the clocks go back if he doesn't hit the ground running with the money he has spent. You don't want your players to have just signed for a manager.

Not a chance of that happening.

Everyone says that at the start. If he's doing poorly, your owner will surely not wait around with the money she's released.

Nobody sets out to sack a manager, until they get a punch in the face. I'm seeing some good free transfers by Port Vale, I'm not convinced on the players that have been bought tbh but wouldn't go over the top on that call.

I hope you do well to be honest.

Who the feck is George Byers?

Just looked him up. 150 appearances and he’s 28. Sounds like the kind of half cripple we’d sign in the hope of.

His goals to game ratio is decent tbf, WHEN he plays.

I mean the answer to that question is going to be ‘because you offered him the best contract’. Which is fine, it’s a job!

Yep. I’m not discounting managers do have a affect, we get it loads from new signings with Cloughie, Lee Gregory for example made a big deal of it, but the fact we probably offered him really good money and he lives 40 minutes up the M1 play a bigger role.

sheff wed and blackpool fans don't seem fussed about his fitness and both have given him glowing references. 150 league appearances and over half of them are at championship, the rest at league one.

It's a fantastic signing on paper although we do absolutely love an injury.

Carol will give Moore a chance, she’s literally clung on to Askey and Crosby longer than she probably should.

There will be a pressure to deliver of course, we’ve probably spent near on £1 million on fees this summer but also have to factor we’ve had a losing culture for 18 months and it will possibly take time to really turn this around.

Well, yes that’s fine. We’ve signed Grant Hall from QPR. Only ever played in the Championship, bit older than Byers but a similar low games to age ratio.

They’re punts.

Hasn’t he played well over 100 times in the last three seasons. Largely a late starter in becoming a regular as at a side in the Prem in his early days?

for what its worth, we've clearly got a much bigger budget than we've had before and i'd be surprised if it's not a top 2-3 budget in this league.

i've never been in the position as a vale fan to have fans of other clubs moan about how much we're spending and in fact there's not many clubs out there who've had as shit a time as we have in the last 25 years, so im a bit uncomfortable with the newness of this spending and the pressure of most people thinking we should be challenging for the autos at least now.

our squad absolutely knocks spots off of what was left in january last season, but ive said before and ill say again, stopping the rot...2 years of massive losing streaks is not easy, moore has work to do on the training ground if he's going to realise the potential of these new signings.
