I’m alright with Slocombe as backup. Definitely still a couple short though - we’re one injury away from having a problem in central midfield and central defence and I’d be a lot happier with one more attacking option. I’m confident we’ll bring players in though, Maynard/Montague have talked all summer about better depth and at present I’d say we don’t have more depth than we did last season (aside from wing back where we look well prepared)

It`s unlikely but not impossible . His record last year for two clubs was appalling and he managed to make us even worse.
Worse than what? A team with Ollie Arblaster and Alfie Devine in. Without them 2, guess how many points Crosby got? Zero. He joined in Feb, after the window closed and the squad was unrecognisable to the one heading into the window.

Owen Goodman confirmed, finally, on a season long loan from Palace. Just need a couple of left backs now!
Bayzo's going to have to work his magic. Goodman let in 7 goals against us last season. Not convinced that this is a good move.

I’ll acknowledge that he’s an utter c**t

Cute.

Makes you wonder why you wait to get relegated before signing decent players and getting rid of the crap ones. Odd.

Moore didn't come in until February.

Everyone says that at the start. If he's doing poorly, your owner will surely not wait around with the money she's released.

Nobody sets out to sack a manager, until they get a punch in the face. I'm seeing some good free transfers by Port Vale, I'm not convinced on the players that have been bought tbh but wouldn't go over the top on that call.

I hope you do well to be honest.

We didn't sack him after relegation so I highly doubt we'd sack him with how much we've backed him this summer.

sounds delusional to me mate, sorry

We'll see.

Who the feck is George Byers?

Just looked him up. 150 appearances and he’s 28. Sounds like the kind of half cripple we’d sign in the hope of.

Lol.

Well, yes that’s fine. We’ve signed Grant Hall from QPR. Only ever played in the Championship, bit older than Byers but a similar low games to age ratio.

They’re punts.

Good signing.

A million? That’s absurd.

Nowhere near lol.

I can give you a different 2 words if you would like them Dan?

Makes a change from a fucking GIF or shit joke.

Port Vale going wilder than a Kappa Alpha Theta jock on Spring Break in this window. Genuinely don't think I've seen these levels of spending at this level before. Making Wrexham look thrifty. Pressure well and truly on and only the title will do.

Haha yes you're right, it's definitely nothing to do with you offering him more money than anyone else.

I know of at least two clubs from a higher level that offered him more than us. It was the longer contract and his relationship with Moore that meant he joined us. Wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be our captain either.

Vale remind me of us this time last season.
We signed several players from one or two leagues above, a few had not played lower than the championship. We were all excited and the play offs were a minimum expectation for most of our fanbase.
Our season just petered out in the end as some did not seem suited to league 2 or for whatever reason it just didn’t work.
This season we have gone the opposite way and have signed players proven at this level.
I’m not saying it won’t work for Vale, just that it is not a guarantee of success in League 2

I think we're one striker and two midfielders short at least and a decent back up keeper. I hope we sign some first team ready players rather than entirely punting on prospects for tomorrow.
Yeah I wasn't clear there really, we do have "depth" positions to fill but I don't think we're looking for starters apart from maybe RCB. So I meant that I don't think we're going to be spending the Langstaff money on fees elsewhere

across our 9 signings there have been hundreds of league two appearances and we've signed 4 "never played in L2 befores" of which 2 are gambles on their way up the pyramid and 2 are moving down...and one of them is a 34 year old keeper who no one really knows if he has been signed as back up, first choice or competition.

it's not really true at all that we've signed several players from leagues above who have not played lower than the championship. and i'd also say that everyone else is bigging up our chances more than actual vale fans are given we saw how shit we were last season and we recognise how much we need to improve. signing the right players is only the first part of us being successful for not

Fair enough.
Hopefully we can be promotion buddies again like 2012/13.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Mass spending doesn’t always get you up in this league Salford is the best prime example.

Of the four sides coming down certainly Vale and Carlisle have gone with the ‘nearly new squad’ approach and spent more this summer than they did last summer when in League one, but both have a two massive obstacles to overcome which is the losing mentality currently at the club and higher expectation from fanbase forced on the club.

Both clubs could have a quite toxic atmosphere quite quickly if it doesn’t start well and it’s that which will dictate a lot of their season, how quick it goes and winning mentality develops.

Can never personally decide when relegated which approach is better, replacing most of the side which failed miserably the year before or keeping many, hoping they are stronger a level lower and adding a little to it hoping to improve.

I remember Carlisle in 1996 stuck with most of its team and went back up, but think I’m 1998 we did similar and required jimmy glass to keep us up.

I somethings feel a whole new side is a massive risk but Carlisle were so atrocious last season in all areas it’s hard to argue keeping any.

I think Mansfield proved last season that you can get comfortably promoted on a tiny budget - you just need a shrewd manager, great players and people willing to lie for some reason about not having big budget

RavenBish snout just grew significantly.

Just because we battered you and then got promoted doesn’t mean we will not pull you up on telling porkys. Always watching :P1:

Apparently we’ve made a bid for Will Swan from our neighbours.

I know they’ve gone up a division but would be surprised if Mansfield got rid of him this soon

Swan would be the kind of player I expect we’ll bring in, young enough it’s an investment but with a reasonable record at this level already.

I mean every player has a price, but it’ll take silly money for you to get him.

Yeah I can’t see it being remotely realistic - we obviously have some money to spend, but it’s not going to be anything huge.

As has happened every window for a couple of years, someone on one of our boards has suggested Bradley Dack is set for a return. So many reasons to not think this is a good idea but at the same time it's Bradley Dack - if we got 15/20 games out of him we'd probably be lucky but it'd be great to see him taking the absolute piss for a bit.

James Chester has signed for Salford after turning down a deal with us. Probably explains why Salford let Theo Vassell move to us. The "swap" probably suits both teams and players. We look to be moving to a back 4 from a back 5 and Chester hasn't the pace (any more) to be one of 2 centre backs, but will contribute much better in a 3. Vassell on the other hand is a lot quicker than Chester, so being in a 2 will be no problem,

Isn't Chester about 45? good player but he can't have too many seasons left in him. I suppose Salford don't care about that.

Just looking at Salfords squad they don't seem to have any goalkeepers. They've got some decent looking defenders though.

35, which as you'll know, is basically only 29/30ish in the L2/NL centre back universe.

Notts fans, how is John Bostock these days? We're rumoured to be sniffing about.

Can still run a game, but only when it's played at his pace, can be really exposed when it's quick and frenetic. Started last season really well but, as with the rest of the team really, went badly downhill when Palmer alongside him in midfield got injured. Quality guy, will get a great reception if we come up against him next season.

In the right system, with right players around him he's an absolute joy to watch. Great at playing the quarterback role, good vision, touch passin, making things tick and linking up play from defence to midfield/forwards.

In the wrong system, without the players doing his legwork he is horribly exposed defensively. Not enough tenacity, strength, not mobile. Has a mistake in him. Far better if you dominate possession then you will struggle to find much better. If not, a liability at this age and this level.

I will never forget what he did for our club after coming in mid season and basically taking us up and putting in an incredible performance in the playoff final when a lot of teammates froze and didn't perform.

Would have been happy to keep him but high wages probably went against him.

I think from what I've heard they may be loaning Jed Ward from us. Brilliant goalie who has just been given a 4 year contract. He is only 20 and played for the England under 20's. We need him to go out to a fourth division side where he will come back next season and be our first team goalie. He need the experience of playing regular football.
