Another solid signing. We've brought in some great attacking options this summer, now hopefully we can sign a couple of defenders.

Nice to see the Grimsby fans bitter about them losing players (again) to us.

Perhaps we've a better chance of doing well next season? We haven't been in the Conference for most of the last decade? Can't see how we're a backwards move, sideways maybe as we're in the same league but just perhaps we've got more going for us than you at the moment?

Let's see how he does. Magnay was a decent signing, hopefully this guy follows suit.

Some of our fans are wanking themselves into a frenzy because of the goals and creativity we've now got, but the fact remains we still have the same dog shit defence.

Until we sign a quality central defender (someone better than Mark Ellis) we've absolutely no chance of promotion or even making the playoffs. A defensive player has to be next.

I don't think our defence is THAT bad, I agree we need some new defenders though. In the second half of the season, we were more solid at the back when we changed the system. A ball-playing defender is surely our priority now.

I think people forget that we have Atkinson who's a pretty good ball playing defender for this level, I'd like to see him given a go alongside Raynes in pre-season. Ellis is good backup but isn't a good enough passer or stopper to warrant a starting place I feel. If we can re-sign Miller then our back 4 on paper doesn't look terrible, although could be improved obviously. Problem is that there isn't one standout bad player, just a load of average ones who are replaceable but who won't force KC to replace them by playing horribly.

It's not that bad as in better than the season before, but it isn't good enough for a team looking to make the playoffs or better.

If you look at the teams in the playoffs and promotion spots, their goals against were in the 40s. Ours was 62 against. That needs to improve, I don't care how many goals we score.

That defensive record is very much marred by the first half of the season when we both scored and conceded an obscene amount of goals, so if you're taking the season's record as a whole you have also got to account for how many we scored.

I think if we keep to the tactic which saw us score and concede very few goals towards the end of the season, but then add in the attacking quality from the likes of Devitt and Adams, then we feasibly could get enough goals and retain the defensive solidity needed to reach the play-offs.

All that isn't to say that I would be opposed to defensive additions, I don't really think Raynes for example is good enough for a team (hopefully) pushing for the top 3, but I'll reiterate that improving the defense will be difficult in that I'd struggle to identify one player who we could replace in order to significantly help the goals against column. They're all pretty average, Grainger is good going forward but isn't saying much defensively, so each defensive signing will only be a slight improvement rather than one player coming in and solving all of our problems of the past few years.

Not all of us are bitter, much as i would have liked him to stay we have a perfect replacement in Shaun Pearson and also Paul Hurst's best strength is his business in the transfer market so i am confident we will start this season with a very strong squad after he gets to work.

You're in League 2. All you need is someone who can smash the ball in to row z when it comes near him.

I know what you mean, but the way Curle wants his defenders to play requires a player who is comfortable on the ball. From the majority of goal-kicks, the ball is played out to the defenders and it's led to quite a few mistakes.

Yeah, ball-playing in this context only really means 'can pass accurate to within 10 yards and without slipping over as the last man', a criteria which has remained unfulfilled an unforgivable amount of times over the last 3 or 4 years.

Shaun Miller is another good signing, striker got 16 goals last season for a club who finished in the bottom half, so should be good for us.

Now we need another striker, a goalkeeper and a new centre back and we're golden!

Very impressed with Carlisle's signings so far, definite promotion contenders next season.

A quick read of the Grimsby forum is enough to make anyone laugh. They think they're a big club and cannot understand why their players are rejecting deals to move to a club that is smaller than big old Grimsby Town.

One or two may leave but it's not a coincidence they're all jumping ship.

Sorry but everybody knows not to take the Fishy seriously!
Those of us who post on here are not like that at all, well maybe one or two but mainly not.

Our first transfer rumour of the summer - Nathan Arnold from Grimsby. Not exactly an exciting prospect, he failed to earn a contract in 2009 when he was on trial with us and we were in the conference at that point. I know 7 years have passed so he could have improved but his failure to establish himself at Cambridge and seemingly being surplus to requirements with Grimsby doesn't fill me with confidence.

He's not exactly surplus to requirements seen as we offered him a contract, however has already discussed in the other thread, he is your typical lower league winger. Excellent when on his game, poor when he isn't, depends if he has more good games than bad ones as to whether he would be a good signing of not.

Fair enough, thought he'd been released, sounds like the sort of player that would divide opinion among our fan base. Wouldn't be overly keen if he's being targeted as a replacement for Chris Whelpdale, although from looking at Twitter a GTFC fan is suggesting talks between Arnold and Stevenage haven't progressed well, so could be irrelevant anyway.

Blackpool signed Colin Daniel.... Not great, id have him for backup and nothing more unless you're in the conference.

Grimsby are going to struggle.

Yep, please don't tar us with The Fishy brush. I think I read someone on there saying that only Portsmouth are a bigger club than ourselves in this division. I do, however, agree with the sentiment that we shouldn't be losing our best players to the likes of Hartlepool and Cambridge (if there is any truth in the Amond rumour that is).

Did Mansfield release him or did he turn down a contract?

Toto is overrated. No point being quality for 80 minutes when the consistent mistakes he makes are as costly as they are. Pearson is far better. Good luck to him, if he can cut out those mistakes he'll be a great signing. I can't see it though.

Arnold seems to be a bit underrated. When he picks up the ball and runs inside he can be frightening. He gets that opportunity far more on the left but last season he lost that spot to Monkhouse. He'd be a great signing for any top conference side, would've like him to stay and have a crack at this league with us but I agree that there's likely better options.

Podge is also replaceable. I hope he stays but I'll be surprised if he surpasses 10 goals next season, which for the record would be a fine return for our target of top 22.

We are apparently close to arranging a deal to bring Andrew Boyce back to Blundell Park, very happy with that.
