Such a important signing for Mansfield, one major problem (we had several) last season was our goalkeeping options - Conrad Logan, who was capable of a howler every game and Bobby who had a disastrous injury.

Marek Štěch is a clear and obvious improvement on what we had.

Don't bet the house on it though.

He started off really well with us, including that stoppage time penalty save at your place (joke of a decision by the way). Then just before Xmas he started with the clangers that cost us a lot of points, and despite undeserved backing from the manager, he never really recovered.
Also has a habit of diving really early, sometimes well before the shot is taken.

Interesting comments on the Yeovil forum at the time we signed him, apparently he started really well there as well before tailing off.

Decent bloke, very passionate, and I wish him well, even with you lot.

You have no idea how bad it was last season, I’d happily bet my house on it.

Have heard from a very reliable source that are Mansfield are now officially at the wage cap limit and there won't be any more signings without anyone leaving the club.

In fairness Logan was Gordan Banks in comparison to Scott Shearer, Paddy Gamble, Jason White, Tim Sandercombe and Shane Redmond
Nobody wants a keeper called Paddy Gamble to be fair

He was terrible.

Remember our first ever season in the conference (urgh) we were playing Altrincham away - we lost 1-0 and conceded after 9 seconds after he let the ball through his legs, I missed the sodding goal too.

Sadly he did it again in an FA cup tie against our then (sniggers) league neighbours chesterfield, and he didn’t play for us again.

Looking back I feel a bit sorry for Gamble. He started off well, then made a few mistakes in a really poor side, then seemed to disappear forever. Mansfield was probably not a good loan move for him at that time. Oh well it's a dog eat dog world

In fairness you’re right on it not being a good move, however the mistakes he made were rather elementary ones.

I’m sure if he had enough about him he’d have gone on loan somewhere else and nailed it.

That's true. Looking back at the match reports for the early 08-09 season it describes plenty of good goalkeeping but a lot of nervousness and a lot of mistakes. Maybe my memory was distorted due to the team making a reasonable start.

Possibly so, we were top after being Kidderminster 4-2 (I think) and it seemed all too easy, then it just all fell apart so easily.

As we’ve said that mistake at Alty really affected him big style, also mcewan didn’t really seem the most sentimental type for a young lad needing some TLC

It’s suddenly occurred to me that we could end up with Conrad Logan given his previous connections to our manager and the fact we released both of our goalkeepers. :ffs:
He was a chubster before, can you imagine what lockdown will have done!!

Scott Shearer was a decent keeper for Crawley but he did have a decent defence in front of him then.

We've signed Dan Sweeney from Barnet. Played once for England C.

Don't know anything about him, seems to have spent his whole career in non league so fits the bill on our recent transfer policy. Described as versatile can play in defence and midfield.

Having released a lot of our defence plus our only proper defensive midfielder he should help fill the gap.

Is it okay to sign players now?

He's a bit lightweight and stands out because of his daft haircut - had a torrid time at our place last time round, but Barnet fans said it was a rare poor performance...

Think him and our defender Ryan Sweeney are brothers

He's definitely not lightweight, 6'3" and well built, technically very good, comfortable on the ball.

Best deployed as a holding midfielder. A good CB too but too rash a decision maker to be the last line of defence. His previous clubs deployed him further forward in more of an attacking role which is a waste of his defensive abilities.

Easily one of the best players in non league the last couple of years, there was interest from L1 and Championship so FGR must be paying him well.

No. No it isn't.

Btw 'Interest from Championship and League 1' generally means absolutely nothing. Just agent bollocks. We always here rumours that some of our players are being tracked by Championship or even Prem clubs. And then they sign for a Scottish club.

Or there was that player Barrow 'beat off competition from Borussia Dortmund for' or that bloke at Eastleigh that was meant to be going to a Championship for £1m and instead signed for Barnet in a swap deal with Muggleton.....

Liam Hearn to Chelsea was definitely one of the best one of those. Funny how Matt Green was never linked to Chelsea, wasn't it?

Tbf Green would have at least been better value then some of the flops Chelsea have signed up front over the years.

We had this striker called Mark McGregor back in the early naughties, scored quite a few goals in the Conf. Was rumoured to be interesting Kevin Keegan's Man City. Which was exciting. Thought we might get a record fee etc. Except he actually ended up joining Nuneaton Borough. Lower league fans often massively over rate their own players.

Ben Hutchinson played in the Champions league, Liam Hearn or Matt Green weirdly enough never got that far.

Always seemed gangly more than well-built. As I say, highly rated, so his performance at Holker Street must've been a one off.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dewhurst ends up back at the club. Seems to be very highly thought of and Beech may be disappointed we never got a chance to give him a run out. He's probably still in our thoughts as we look to go into the transfer market.

If any of that's accurate then he'll fit in well. We do like signing lightweight players, and as for daft haircuts.....

The Jamie Devitt to Carlisle thing is dead. Not just because of the club going part time, although that’s no doubt a factor. What Carlisle offered was way below what he was on in his previous spell here.

We're going what now?

Rumour doing the rounds today that the club is going to announce within the next week that we’re going part time for the 20/21 season due to the financial hardship caused by lockdown. Most of the contracted players have agreed to it for a season but 2 have refused and they are now free to look for a new club. But the club see this as a way to get through this and come out of it in a better position in 12 months time.

Hopefully just bull shit but a few people have mentioned it today. I guess we’ll find out and get more details next week.
