Theo Robinson was great for us when on loan in league 2, think he’ll score plenty for Vale, think that’s a good signing.

Typical Port Vale, we’ve gone from basically having Maynard confirmed at the end of last week (as we were led to believe) to signing Theo Robinson today.

I’m not writing Robinson off, he is an okay signing who may turn out good. However, Maynard would have been a guaranteed starter who in my opinion would have turned us into an automatic contender.

But if he is now costing double what Theo is would it be value for money? And with the team culture we have founded under Askey do you want a player who has dragged it out on a huge wage to potentially disturb that? Askey spent all last close season getting rid of that.

I am pleased enough,

Mark Cullen
Theo Robinson
Tom Pope
Devante Rodney

That is a decent strike force for this level with plenty of options.

How can they, or anyone else, offer a substantial contract in these days of the salary cap?

I believe they can get around it as its a new contract offered originally before the cap.

Maynard would be a great signing for any League Two side, but he's two years older than Robinson and presumably would cost a fair whack more too. Over the last two seasons in League Two, Maynard has had a goal every 155 minutes compared to one every 172 minutes for Robinson - think the value for money is probably comparable.

Over a full season of 90 minute appearances, that's 26/27 goals for Maynard and 24 for Robinson.

I can only go off his time at Macc but Askey preferred team players, or ones who made the first XI better than the individuals in it. Rightly or wrongly, I've always viewed Maynard as just a scorer, whereas Robinson is very much a team player.

Never liked Theo at our place, terrible footballer but he always seemed to do okay when he left on loan.

Bolton hoping to get another 4 through the door this week. Amoateng will definitely be one of the four, been on trial and sounds like he’s done enough - a young kid from Bury I believe.
Probably another LB/Left sided mid and then the other two I’m not sure.

Theo Robinson is one of those players that you think always seams to score against us but when I checked back not as many as i had imagined prob stems from when he tore us a new one in fa cup against Lincoln when they were conference and we was league one

It is the case, he'd agreed terms with Vale on very good money before Mansfield popped up at the 11th hour with a stupid remuneration package.
But a contact only becomes valid when it’s signed, so having an unsigned contract before the cap is meaningless - every club could get round the cap by backdating the contract. Surely whatever Maynard’s being offered now has got to be less than what Mansfield offered him before the cap.

as bonuses are included in the salary cap i hope he gets about 60 goals season for them - then they lose all the points for going about £700-800k over the allowance...

Bolton still in for Devitt or has that one died?

I'm not sure why Maynard gets so much stick. He is very much a team player and he's a goal scorer. Most if not all teams in this league need a player like him if they want to do anything in this league.

Fair play to JR, he knows we need goals so he's sold his boat to fund the wages for Nicky Maynard. 15k per goal is a good deal for all parties I think

Yeah exactly this. When we won the league we had Scott Wilson on a dozen or so goals by Xmas and doing nothing wrong to even think about dropping him, but Askey decided to get Nathan Blissett in who whilst we knew wouldnt score the same amount resulted in a much better focal point to bring everyone else into play during attacks. Whilst it didnt really change the way we played, it just added something that we probably didnt realise was missing.

Fiacre Kelleher actively looking for a new club after leaving us following demotion relegation. Decent enough centre half to be fair, shouldn't have any problems picking up a L2 side.

Leaves us with zero players now.

A lot of Vale fans have lost their shit on the onevalefan forum after being so close seemingly to signing Maynard but ending up with Theo Robinson! That's despite Robinson having actually a slightly better goals to minutes ratio over the last couple of season and also being a couple of years younger. Admittedly his loan spell with is left something to be desired, but that was four years ago now and he also clearly wasn't match fit during his short time with is.

So far this summer I'm pretty happy with our signings of Mills, Whitehead, Robinson and Rodney. I don't consider any of them as guaranteed starters. But last season I always had the impression that our best 11 would give anyone a game but with two or three injuries our squad could stretch thin. That won't be an issue now, and I genuinely think we will be able to have a subs bench that is our strongest for a very long time.

Our one issue could be at left back. Montano isn't a natural there and trans will always look to expose him, while Adam Crooks doesn't look good enough for any side genuinely chasing promotion. If we could get Mitch Clark back on loan then I'd say we are almost definites for a play-off spot without shouting it from the rooftops.

Good points, also Theo Robinson played for us in a top half L1 side so this is a level lower.

We didnt need may players and after a spell where we signed something like 54 players in 2 seasons under Smurf the last two has been a stable rebuild.

Left back we could do with but depends if we are able with the over 21 rule as I believe once the keeper signs we are at full capacity on that, but a loan may be an option, that said if Monty is to play he is going to be a Left back I would think with the 3 wingers we have ahead at the moment.
