If she's the best person for the job and he had over 60 applicants, then why only interim manager?

It would be great if she does well there and makes history but it does seem like Dale Vince has one eye on publicity and is already thinking ahead to what if he has to sack her and that he can just shunt her back into the academy and claim it was only ever meant to be temporary.

She's got a tough job on her hands in any case. She's not the first manager to be promoted from coaching/academy roles to first team management and only a small number of those go on to have successful careers in management, but at least the majority can quietly go back to coaching, she'll get a lot more media attention whatever happens.

She can't be worse than Ferguson surely.

That over 60 applicants statement is bizarre, were they applying for the interim job?

Ferguson's sacking wasn't planned we had literally only just been given permission to talk to Forfar's manager to join his coaching staff.

Logically, he was probably referring to when Hannah was appointed to run the Academy. I can't believe there would have been 60 people sending the club their CV in the couple of hours our so between Big Dunc being shown the door and the announcement that Hannah would be taking on the role of interim manager.

The club has a history of promoting the Academy Manager to run the first team, whenever the manager has left, so very little surprise that it has happened again. Hannah is well qualified, at least in terms of coaching, knows the majority of the squad fairly well...four of them are Academy graduates...so for me it is a bit of a no brainer. At least she won't have long to wait to make her mark, with an away game tonight at Melksham, after which attention will likely turn to discussions about shortcomings in the squad, rather than who is managing them.

COYR!

What are the reasons behind the Ferguson sacking? Seems a bit bizarre for the close season?
On the club forum there is someone spreading a rumour about an incident at the training ground...but that is all it is, don't think anyone really has a clue and I don't expect the club to confirm one way or the other.

Technically that isn’t right. Hannah Dingley is head of academy, which is primarily administrative, she doesn’t actually coach any of the youth teams full time. Our U18’s head coach was Jon Paul Pittman last season. When Mark Cooper was sacked Hannah was already head of academy at the club, but we promoted U18’s head coach Jimmy Ball to interim instead.

This is actually the first time we’ve promoted the head of academy to interim, before that it was either a first team coach (Tim Harris, Dave Brown, Gary Seward) or U18’s head coach (Scott Bartlett, Jimmy Ball).

She does have all the qualifications etc and I have nothing against her getting a chance, she deserves one, but that doesn’t hide from the fact that this is only happening now because we as a club are an absolute shambles and have fucked off the entire coaching staff for the second time in 6 months.

Can I include coaches here? Good.

Darren Byfield leaves the first team coach position at Crawley to join Walsall.

He's a Walsall lad I believe so moving closer to his family etc.

He was interim manager at Crawley after Matt Etthrington walked out last season and did a good job. Decent rep, chatted to him in passing a couple of times and seems a decent bloke. Our loss is Walsalls gain but good luck to him.

Beat you to it but yeah. Decent coach and a decent bloke.

Moving to home area so not part of a clearout but our loss is your gain.

Whatever the reason for Big Dunc’s exit, it’s vital we appoint someone in the next couple of weeks as we’re already behind on our preparation and this hasn’t helped. Apparently our new DoF from Brentford Allan Steele is handling the process so hopefully we make a sensible appointment rather than a headline grabbing one or a risky punt.

Dingley isn’t likely to get it, although she’s the bookies favourite. Beyond that Artell and Ball seem fancied, although given the way the latter was sacked from our youth set up that seems unlikely too. Others I’ve seen mentioned are Cotterill, Barry-Murphy, Cowley and Tisdale. Also Sam Saunders might be in the frame given the Brentford link.

Get this one as wrong as the last two appointments and we’re heading back to non league.

Looks like we’ll be going down the route of another youth coach, with Southampton’s B team head coach Dave Horseman the favourite apparently.

Suppose that’s the type of appointment that won’t argue with our DoF or want too much say in signings.

It's gonna be one hell of a ride. And every chance that's to the National League, but hope springs eternal.
Dingley's interview at the end of the Ireland trip really didn't sound as though she expects to be given the job permanently, and that she knows the new Head Coach is imminent.
And there are some good Head coaches available who you'd expect to be interested. I'm very much not including Dave Horseman in that statement though. Big risk.
Who was the last first time Head Coach to be a success in this league? (Serious question).

Seems very much the cheap option, which is maybe understandable after having to pay off Big Dunc.

Horseman has a long career in youth coaching, not done that much at first team level. He was assistant to Ruben Selles at Southampton since January, which going by their record in that time isn’t exactly promising. Could be an inspired appointment but it is risky.

Rob Edwards had next to no EFL experience when we appointed him

Neither did Ian Burchnall. Or Duncan Ferguson.

I would say 7 or 8 times out of 10 rookie appointments don't work out at this level. So this appointment has around a 25% chance of working out, I would say. We've made a series of atrocious footballing decisions in the last year, this better not be another one or we really are in trouble.

No, that number is something like 5 out of 10 I believe.

Poster's question I was responding to was, 'Who was the last first time Head Coach to be a success in this league?'
