Not these days, there are workarounds such as players who've made X amount of career appearances count for one now. We usually make 9/10 changes in this competition, just at the moment our injury situation is so bad its down to raiding the youth side more than we normally would (we've utilised 3 or 4 most games in this but could be more like 7-8 tonight)
Sounds like a full 11 change for us, likely to include a few who could be called starters for us at some point this season though (Boyle, Cleworth, Young, Davies, Bickerstaff) plus Hosannah and Waters who are decent L2 players.

I was actually going in the hope of seeing some of the lesser spotted players tbh, plus against a team we haven't met in a long team (Albeit a shadow XI).

You'd say Waters is a decent L2 player? Blimey, he's on a par with Michael Bakare!

Due to Charltons inability to beat a side from step 4 of the non-league pyramid our scheduled visit to play the Addicks in the Papa Johns Bristol Street Johnstones Paint Trophy has be rescheduled for the following Tuesday, the 21st of November.

We have put out a disappointingly strong team this evening, it is almost looking like we want to win the game...just hope that our wafer thin squad doesn't suffer any injuries ahead of a couple of far more important games in the league.

We've put in a good performance so far and are deservedly 1-0 down.

Port Vale had a 17 year old who is running the game and looks like being the next Zidane.

Weird game really, there are goals to be had here for both sides. We've had our moments but Vale are good for the lead at the moment, easily the better team.

Rhys Walters, he’s been man of the match pretty much every game he has played (the Carabao and Pizza Cup ties). Huge hopes for him.

I was surprised to see he is so young, he looks (and plays) like he's 25. Looks a prospect

Beat Liverpool U-21's 2-1 which was the perfect result.... we got the money for the win, but as we needed a 3 goal win for any chance to go through we also went out.

7870 with 673 from Port Vale. Mental stuff all round.

We brought Mullin on which is quite tragic and he's scored immediately. He's suspended for Saturday so that's our excuse I think.

Tried to stream a bit of our game tonight and it was genuinely unwatchable, just walking pace, neither team looking remotely interested.

All done for another year.

Unless there’s a winner in the next 10 minutes going to have the utterly ridiculous spectacle of a penalty shootout despite the fact it will have no effect on who finishes first or second.

Quite funny we are chucking on kids they throw on Mullin and McLean!

More like Vieira for me, a long way to go but you are right he looks some prospect

How full strength a side did you put out? Only watched part of it, you had (as expected) around 75% possession but i cant remember you threatening. Very straighforward win at walking pace.

Viera is a good shout. He's very impressive. Can't believe he was on loan at Leek.

Bringing on Mullin, McClean and James Jones has (surprise surprise) made a big difference. Mullin and McClean have both scored to make it 2-1

A weird mixed team, we’ve been down to the bare bones injury wise so we had to play Langstaff to give McGoldrick a rest and the defence was strongish, but we didn’t even bother putting any of our creative players (Jones, Crowley, McGoldrick) in the squad. Hence the 75% possession, two shots thing.

Three of our under 18s who your own youth team hammered 3-0 in the youth cup last week played in a ‘must win’ game as well, which probably about sums up our interest in progressing.

Not heard of a couple of the lads we’ve thrown on now but great experience for them, three more youth debutants tonight.

Other than Gavin Massey and the keeper we’ve ended the game entirely with a side from the youth academy. Great to see.

2-1. Should have had a penalty at the end to put a sheen on it too.

First half a slightly more experienced Vale team were better than us and deservedly took the lead . Second half a much more experienced (once we made our subs) Wrexham team were well on top of a very young Port Vale side. Enjoyable game really.

Walters was obviously great as I said before, but I was also impressed with Lomax and Buah for you lot as well - neither looked like U18s players.

Vale 24 ran the show, until we brought Mullin on to mark him out the game, and McClean was absolute class. I went as the mrs didn't want to go after feeling under the weather, and heard a Vale fan said they couldn't cope with JMc and SPM.

There’s a good group of them coming through, something our owners have invested a fair bit in improving. In the end tonight we ran out of steam a bit when the top players like McLean and Mullin were on the pitch but that’s no disgrace. Could do with sending some like Walters out on loan at some point if can find the right club to help develop him. Think it’s a night both teams can take a good bit from even if it’s a devalued competition now.

We just need to keep him involved, at the moment our first choice midfield is absolute quality, the best we’ve had since the championship days in the 90s as we’ve got the England U20 central midfield on loan plus Ojo who’s quality so he just needs to bide his time and possibly go on loan, however if any of the two loanees get recalled his chance should come.

Lomax was a first appearance in the first team as well (due to our injury crisis at the back). Pleased he had a good game. Buah looked decent on his first app when he came on against Newcastle kids to be fair, we’ve invested a lot in the youth system and it’s finally coming good.

Mainly based off a decent looking 2/3rds of a season with Barrow before we signed him.

Agree he has done nothing for us in his limited opportunity.
