3-1 win against a Luton XI (under 21’s plus Andros Townsend) this evening. Curtis, Hall and Paton the scorers. One would imagine there’ll be 45 minutes at least for the projected starting XI on the opening day in our final friendly on Saturday.

FT | Bradford City 2-1 Sunderland AFC

Played some good stuff tonight. Found ourselves in some great areas - arguably, it could have been 4/5-1 to us.

Sunderland’s only threat coming down the left, who gave Brad Halliday a torrid time. Romaine Rundle - signed from Standard Liege in Jan - fantastic player!

Most importantly, the players appear to have come away from the tie unscathed.

Onto Altrincham this Saturday, which should give us a fair indication of how we will line-up against MK Dons on the 10th.

I'm not feeling confident about Maynard at all.

Me neither but that’s entirely based on last season and nothing to do with this preseason - that was a weird game, Boston played like it was a cup final based on my mate’s account who is a fan of neither club but went because he’s a masochist or something

I still think we’re short in attacking options but I’m not sure our first choice defence and midfield have played more than 30 minutes together so far (and that’s ignoring the fact Palmer hasn’t played at all)

I'm concerned that we're unable to close a game out, too many late concessions.

We conceded both goals tonight with Chicksen and a youth team player (Aves) in the back 3 and Slocombe in goal (+ Hinchy and a trialist in midfield) - I don’t think that’s cause for concern unless you support the reserves/U18 teams

Slocombe completely at fault for both goals as well apparently - first came for a cross and somehow missed it completely, second beaten at his best post. Cause for concern when he inevitably somehow ends up as first choice again in October, I guess.

Basically every one of our pre-season has followed the same pattern - we look good and are generally winning for an hour, make a load of subs then fall apart and start conceding too easily. Whether it’s just pre-season ‘bringing youth players on and having weird line-ups out’ or a pattern to worry about I guess we’ll find out in a few weeks.

Maybe the new GK coach will have taught Aidan Stone how to dive properly by then

Grimsby drew 2-2 with Rotherham this evening. Played ok, certainly tried to play football, with lots of movement off the ball. Still woefully short of a squad. At least 4 starters needed.
Don’t suppose we will come up against the likes of Clarke-Harris in League 2 this season! He scored both of Rotherham’s goals

Nothing against Slocombe, he's honest, thoughtful and very professional but he's so far past his best or L2 standard that he should be nowhere near even the bench. Amazed he survived the summer cull.

Drew 1-1 with Portsmouth. Leigh with our goal. Played 5, won 3, drew 1, lost 1. Just Plymouth to go.

I was daft enough to go to Boston tonight. Without wishing to be too dramatic get your money on a Notts relegation lads cos we are crap. Are there enough basket cases to save us?

Was looking forward to seeing Bass so disappointed to see em dragging poor old Slocombe out of a well deserved retirement…what’s that? He’s not retired? Christ that’s optimism for you.

To be fair Slocombe is the least of our worries. We’re not scoring 89 goals this season and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Jodi go in goal cos that idiot insists on playing him everywhere EXCEPT WHERE HE PROVIDED A ZILLION ASSISTS LAST SEASON. Good set of handbags at the end as well, which the Wealdstone Pep also appeared to be at the centre of. Well done Stu.

Lost 2 1 to maidenhead. Mostly playing our back ups and then subbing on 1st choice as game progressed. Obviously we are still going up.

Well if this pre season has told me one thing about Carlisle heading into this season it’s this…….

It will all turn nasty quite fast if we start poorly, the pressure on Simpson will be poured on very fast if we don’t come out of the blocks, there still is a mass simmering among the fanbase of lost trust in Simpson and it won’t take much to make it vocal l.

I’ve called it in the manager thread, I think he’ll be gone in September.

The owners have made it clear that they expect promotion. They have provided a top budget for just that. Yet we look like a bottom 6 team at the moment and that losers culture still seems to be festering. Lack of pace, lack of creativity, lack of energy in midfield, lack of a plan B. Simpson doesn’t appear to have learned anything from last season.

With the tough set of fixtures to start with, he’ll be out in September.

We beat tier 8 side Runcorn Linnets 4-1 with mostly our U21s playing. Wraps up the away friendlies, just 1 more to go on Saturday now.

A 2-2 draw with League 1 Rotherham tonight which means we are definitely getting promoted.

Rough and tough place Boston.

Glad we got out of dodge city physically in tact. Palmer is a worry but shouldn't be a shock that he's not ready. Put next best two need to get good enough if we want a positive season.

I take a very (probably too) relaxed view of friendlies. Results shouldn't come into any judgement of a manager or team for the reasons given above.

Although if we play well and lead at Prenton Park only to go on to lose in the second half = meltdown after one game.

Good grief, is Chicksen still getting game time. He was woeful for us many years ago, thought he might have drifted to the 6th tier by now.

Yeah he’s a non-league player albeit a fairly solid one. He’s probably 3rd/4th choice in both positions he plays though so thankfully shouldn’t have to watch him play much this season.

As far as I can see, there are no pre-season fixtures after Saturday's games, so the final table will be published on Monday morning.

And Cauley Woodrow and Joe Taylor from the first team squad too. So you can give yourselves a little more credit for it.

Noticeable across the board that clubs just aren't playing as many friendlies as they used to - at least not traditional 90 minute games. I remember pre-seasons playing 8/9 friendlies as a matter of course.

Adam Chicksen is a blast from the past... he was billed as Dean Lewington's eventual replacement when he came through the academy over a decade ago.

Little did we know at the time that our Lewie would still be playing when he collects his state pension.

I know it’s a dog eat dog business but just feel the last 7 days it’s highlighted a big undercurrent of negativity to Simpson still lingers from last season.

There shouldn’t be negativity to Carlisle this summer, new owners, millions put into the ground and facilities, new signings including probably the player on highest wage in L2 this season.

That is not the situation usually tied to a negative pre season and lack of hope for the season, I’d usually base that to a club like Morecambe where all players left club, future in doubt and zero investment.

But the negativity is increasing was bad after rochdale got worse after Gateshead it is a weird situation I’ve not seen much in football where a lot of things have been done positively in the summer but the optimism is minimal.

A decent 3-1 win for Rovers over a strong if not full strength Blackpool xi featuring Robbie Apter. Injuries meant Brad Walker played in central defence, while Omari Patrick, still shown as a trialist scored the third goal/
