Excellent news! Looks like we are serious of getting an immediate return. Its a great start but we must build round them better than last summer.

If we can tempt Jason Mooney and Callum Howe from York and Scunny Id be oer the moon. But that might be asking a lot!

Your average attendance shot up partially on the back of curious fans of other clubs who made the trip. If Rovers go up you'll take a big hit there and I doubt a lot of people like myself who went last season will bother again next season.

I see a lot of similarities between Eastleigh and Crawley. Wouldn't surprise me if the results are similar, dramatic rise followed by a slow decline back towards a more sustainable level.

In fairness to Crawley they were always a fairly large non-league club whose natural level is between the top 6 of Step 2 and about halfway up Step 1. You can't say the same about Eastleigh, although they spent a long time in the Conference South before they won it in 13/14.

It gets rather boring people saying Eastleigh will go pop and will end up at their natural level. Our natural level is only one league below this one, where we were since the Conf South was born, so we don't really have far to fall, should it happen, do we?
For now, we will all just have to see what happens over the next 5 years or so, but so far, everything the owner said would happen, has happened, so baring poor results on the pitch next season, we are in for a decent year with increased gates, because the owner & his team work their nuts off engaging the local community & drumming up new supporters & sponsors etc. Going from an average "home fan base" of around 500 last year, to pushing 1600 this year, it is indeed a great increase, but with ST sales going well and lots of fantastic feedback from the community & local schools etc, its felt we can build on those numbers again this season.
How many of you can say that about your clubs gate increases? Sure at some point the rise slows down, but lets just see how far we can go eh, without being vilified by the fans of "real clubs"? Give us a chance. Im sure those of you that visited the Silverlake this year will have been greeted with respect and a warm welcome. Is it really too much to ask that you give us that same respect back, instead of just rubbishing us as a football club.

If you want to see a real example of engagement = increased fanbase, please look at Alty. Rather than holding up your false model as a bastion of non-league football.

Or what our supporters trust have done with our ambassadors scheme, 35 schools enrolled and our average gate last season up to 1500. Players regularly do school visits as well.

As part of our 125 year celebrations, we gave away a free FGR shirt to every year 3 and 4 at schools in the Stroud District.

We had a youth tournament last weekend which attracted well over 1000 (mainly family and friends), with 22 teams of various age groups taking part. We're looking to get the Glos Schools finals held at our stadium in the future as well.

All that sort of proactive work in the community is what can help grow support, it takes a lot of work but in the long term it is worth it, even if you're a so called tinpot club.

Interesting comment about clubs ending up at their natural level. We have been in this division for the best part of two decades, so you would have to say that our natural level at least in recent times is the Conference National, but there is nothing wrong with having an ambition to play at the next one.

There is undoubtedly a lot of hard work being performed, largely behind the scenes, by unsung volunteers at all of our clubs. It might be that it is more evident, or even important, at clubs like Eastleigh and Forest Green who are still on their rise. Over the past few weeks a number of initiatives taken by both these teams have been highlighted on this forum, what is to stop anyone else from any other team copying them, if it can increase your fanbase then what do you have to lose. You will need those fans just as much when you return to the Football League as we will if we get there for the first time. Our crowds last season were up by a modest 25% in comparison to the improvement shown by Eastleigh, but that represents a lot of hard work, some of those people will keep coming back.

I was one of those fortunate enough to get into a game at Silverlake for free last season, my understanding was that it was a gesture by the Chairman to thank the fans for their support in the previous season, but also in the hope that they might attract new fans. I was stood largely with Southampton fans, many of whom said that they attended occasional games at Eastleigh, but might go to more in the future due largely to the cost of Premier League games.

The Chairmen of both Eastleigh and Forest Green are taking a new approach to the way they run their clubs, although radically different they are both successful businessmen. I don't have a problem with this as there is no proscribed method, what works for one team will not work for another. I know this will probably be met with a rash of comments along the lines of "if you throw enough money at a club it will succeed", but this isn't always the case, success often comes by just trying to do something differently. If your club keeps doing things the same way then it is likely that it will stand still.
