Those 2nd year options on Pugh and Tonge have really come back to bite us. Thanks for absolutely fuck all Michael Brown.

Transfer listing Barnett and Lainton is really just a moot point as I can't see any other team being desperate enough to take them. Only slight hope is Steve Davis gets a job somewhere and can palm Joe off on whichever poor sucker it is.

No surprises there for me. It just underlines what a mess Brown put us in, and how much it has affected Aspins options for next season. I would expect a few to be paid up and shipped out in the next few months hopefully.

He was fine for us to start with. Got a small injury, out for a couple of games and was mediocre when he returned. Although Brown didn’t see him as a first pick.

Vale will have no trouble getting rid of Howe. A few NL Clubs would take him.

On second thought I highly doubt more than 1 will be in the starting 11. If more than 1 is in the starting 11 then we will struggle again. Hopefully Aspin can see that he needs a couple more midfielders.

So we are keeping the vast majority of the players that almost got us relegated. Fantastic.

Lainton, Barnett, Tongue, Pugh and Davis should have all been paid up and shipped out.

Worked for us

Also, Brown, thought he was a bit disruptive in the dressing room, hence another reason he was sent back a bit early!

Lainton looked decent enough to me when I saw him. We have no keepers on our books, so wouldn't mind him here at least as competition to whoever else we sign.

The issue with Lainton isn't that he is a particularly bad keeper but he spent most of last season injured along with much of the previous few seasons.

All but one issue now resolved at the Abbey - talks are ongoing to try to find a way of keeping Barry Corr. He's all but said that if he can't find a way to turn out for us next season he'll probably jack it in.

Medy Elito and Pierro Mingoia follow Leon Legge and Uche out of the door. George Taft and Billy Waters reurn to their clubs at the end of their loans. Odds on that tafty will be back. David Forde has triggered a one year extension on his contract.

So we have the basis for a decent squad but will probably be filling in with youngsters rather than signing many 2nd or 3rd choice options.

GK - Forde/Mitov
RB - Halliday/Davies
LB - Carroll/Norville-Williams
CB - Taylor/New Signing/Darling
MF - Deegan/O'Neil/Brown/Maris/Osadebe/Lewis/Squire/Worman
W - Amoo/Dunk/Knowles
Strikers - Ibehre/Corr??/New Signing/Azeez/Foy

I think most of the youngsters could usefully go out on loan and be covered by an extra signing or two (perhaps 2 strikers and 2 defenders rather than one of each) and a couple of incoming loanees.

We might be open to offers for Lewis and especially Osadebe and Azeez.

Well here's ours:

Contract Extension Offered:

James McKeown, Luke Summerfield, Martyn Woolford, Danny Collins, Andrew Fox, Ahkeem Rose

Contract Extension Triggered by Club:

Siriki Dembele, Max Wright, Harry Clifton, Reece Hall-Johnson

Contract Expired & Released:

Ben Davies, Nathan Clarke, James Berrett, Tom Sawyer, Jack Keeble, Ben Killip, Scott Vernon, Karleigh Osborne, Gary McSheffrey, Sean McAllister, Zak Mills

Players already under contract with the club:

Paul Dixon, Mitch Rose, JJ Hooper, Sam Kelly, Harry Cardwell

Loan players returning to parent club:

Jamille Matt, Jake Kean, Simeon Jackson, Easah Suliman, Diallang Jaiyesimi, Mallik Wilks, Charles Vernam

Pretty happy with all that. Zak Mills being released probably a minor surprise, but he's not really shown his best form in the last few months. If we can get rid of Dixon and Kelly we'll be well set for next season. Wouldn't mind us trying to sign Vernam since he looked really useful before getting injured.

Yeah, Mills being released is a bit of a surprise as is Woolford being offered another contract, although I must say that he has improved a hell of a lot since Jolley's been here.

Yeah, the club exercised the option to extend his contract to the end of next season. He's been injured / next to useless since January, so I can't see anyone coming in and offering us enough for him to move on.

What went wrong with Mingoia, seemed to be the envy of the division when you signed him.

Mills the only surprise for me. Glad McKeown is being offered a new contract. Hoping he signs!

Good that Clifton and Wright are staying too. Clifton showed real passion towards the end of the season.

Nothing been said about Chris Clements. Although he finished the season on loan at FGR he was still our player. I assume that he'll be released too.

Can’t say I’ve heard of too many of these players released from various clubs, except all the aging journeymen from Grimsby and the like.

I’d take Elito and Mingoia from Cambridge though.

Derry (reined him back and pulled him into the right side of a diamond rather than flat 4), then injuries, then a fit David Amoo - who has been magnificent as the season wound down. The extra issue was probably that when he did get on the field he didn't have Jabo or Barry Corr to get on the end of his crosses for most of the season.

Mingoia was probably on a decent wage with us, too much for second choice to Amoo, but I'm sure he "could do a job" with a proper pre-season.

I'm not sure the music scene up your way, even over the hills, is sufficient to attract Medy/Don E. He'll do well to stay in L2 - although Vanni would suggest he might be a better fit in L1.

Would like Mingoia at City. Can imagine him being a Tisdale type player.

The management have basically decided, after a 15th place finish, that they wanted to keep everyone. I mean, of the 4 we released, only 2 were first teamers. We have 25 players under contract for next season and that's before the likely returns of Miller and Green, and before we sign a couple of full backs, and before apparently another 2nd year scholar possibly signs his deal. Squad feels bloated already and the season has only been over 4 days.

At least we have some long needed continuity at the club after years of losing our best players each year, along with Academy products that have, largely on the whole, improved dramatically as opposed to being stagnant as it were under the Davis reign. If it wasn't for an injury crisis and some holes in the squad in the first half of the season, we'd have finished much higher than 15th. Artell addressed these and so I agree with the majority of the current squad staying along with the almost certain signings of Miller and Green to come in the next week or two. Let's keep the momentum going on that front.

The bloated squad is misleading. It's not like at Port Vale where Michael Brown signed a ton of journeymen on daft contracts. Our first team is the actual first team, the leading U23 players that are trying to break through, and the first year professionals. The FYPs will do sod all this year, a couple might make the bench but they're here for the U23s and added cover, they'll all be on next to nothing and you can take them out the first team equation. Reilly, Lundstram, Finney and (if he hasn't sorted his attitude out) Dale will be the ones playing most weeks in the U23s with a hope of making the first team. Of them, I can only see Dale making the first team without an injury crisis taking place anytime soon. But that's not the club's fault, it's the Academy system's fault in general forcing us to play these daft games or else we lose our privileges and perks from Category 2 status. At least all 9 will be on a cheap wage funded more than likely by the sizable Academy grant we receive.

Then there's Will Jaaskelainen, who is very highly regarded by the club, who I see being loaned to a Conference/Conference North side to gain valuable experience as they won't want him doing sod all with Richards being our No. 2 keeper.

So once you've accounted for that, including the inevitable signings of Green and Miller too, there are 17 (or 18 if you include Dale) in the true first team squad for next year and there'll be room for the two fullbacks we desperately need and room for another forward which I think we'll sign for depth. The squad doesn't need the major surgery it needed last year. Maybe 2 permanent and 1 or 2 loan signings at best. When you think about it, last year we signed 5 permanent players and 2 loanees for the first team last year, and that's before we developed Wintle, Lowery, Pickering, Ng and Kirk to become consistent mainstays in the first team rather than making cameo appearances. So it was more or less an entirely new squad that needed the time to gel. Throw in another 5 players in January and the overhaul was absolutely apparent come the season's end.

I have no doubts Dave wanted to get rid of Bakayogo 12 months ago but had his hands tied due to a clause in his contract. Dagnall has lost it now but someone will take a punt on him, I doubt he'll do fantastically though unless he drops down a division and keeps fit. Udoh was an act of desperation by a manager who had struggled to develop players and was unsurprisingly a misfit. The only other players I would've released would've been Finney and Brad Walker, but the latter has another year on his contract here and will more than likely be given another chance next season, which I'm not too opposed to if he knuckles down and stops throwing his toys out the pram.

I've gushed about Mingoia on our forum, I loved him but it was probably right to let him go with the emergence of Amoo, but he'll be a hell of a signing for someone in this division if you have a striker capable of heading the ball playing for 30 games a season, his delivery is the best I've seen in a U's shirt for 20 years, shame it ended as it did and bewildering he has detractors because he can't get his head down and outrun a full back 9 times out of 10.

Which ironically was the reason so many Carlisle fans didn't rate Amoo

Clearly fullbacks in L2 (at least the ones we've seen recently) are a bit slower than you saw in L1 or his injuries slowed him down in his second season with you. Since he got over his injuries here you can depend on him getting to the byline and getting in a cross.
