As expected:

Cheltenham Town can confirm the club's retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2019/20 season.

The following players have been released at the end of their contracts:
Rhys Lovett, Archie Brennan, Rohan Ince, Jonte Smith, Luke Varney

The following players are leaving the club as their loan spells have now expired:
Owen Evans, Jake Doyle-Hayes, Jacob Greaves, Max Sheaf, Tom Nichols

Josh Debayo has been offered a new contract.

Contract negotiations are ongoing with Chris Clements.

The following players are already under contract for next season:
Scott Flinders, Sean Long, Chris Hussey, Ben Tozer, Charlie Raglan, Dan Bowry, Conor Thomas, Reuben Reid, Tahvon Campbell, Ryan Broom, Will Boyle, Alex Addai, George Lloyd, Alfie May

The only real disappointment is the loss of Reg. Lovett never really broke through and on two occasions we've had issues with our current number 1 and loanees have been brought in ahead of him. Brennan was a first year pro, so no loss there. Ince got done in the opening game against Leyton Orient, then on his return game got injured in the warm-up, he never really recovered after that. Jonte was a decent squad player, and a genuinely nice bloke, but we were amazed when he was offered an extension to the end of the season in January.

As for Reg, it's gutting to see him go. He's been outstanding in the two seasons he was with us. It also means that we're back to having no players in the squad older than me. If he can get back to full fitness, another League 2 team will get a quality forward on their hands. That's a big if though because he's had a couple of nasty injuries this season.

Has Long managed to get a run of games this season? Seems to have spent most of it injured with you lot.

Our highest appearance maker this season after practically all of last season out injured.

He's done a fantastic job to be fair to him.

THATS 41 PLAYERS!

Sorry, thats 41 players and they're probably going to sign more. How much longer do the parachute payments last?

Casey
End this season I'm guessing.

Good to hear. He was ok here, just unlucky he had Neal Eardley in front of him. Couldn't have been here at a worse time to be fair to him.

They had 64 on their books counting all the released ones! What the fuck does a club need that many players for? And how will they cope with the 20 player limit they're talking about bringing in?

Crazy really that they didn't go up this year. Their bench on the two occasions they played us this season were ridiculous.

It appears that Chris Stokes, one of the three players to be offered a contract, has signed for next season. By my reckoning that gives us (possibly) a squad of 15 players, with the club still waiting to see if Joe Mills signs on the dotted line.

11 announced under contract plus Stokes. The 2 youth lads are still on scholarship terms apparently as they were first years last season so don't technically count on the first team wage bill I wouldn't have thought? Will hopefully sign proper deals at some point as both pretty highly rated apparently.

So I make it 12 contracted first teamers, 13 if Joe Mills signs. Don't know what's happened to Taylor Allen, not mentioned anywhere.

I understood, as per the press release from the club, that Covill and Bunker had been promoted to the first team squad...they had already been allocated squad numbers last season.

You can be a part of the first team squad whilst still on scholarship forms. Neither have signed pro deals yet. Saves money on wages if nothing else. Don't know how it affects the 20 player limit though. If they do count our squad is going to be very young and have very little depth as it only leaves room for 4 or 5 signings (depending on the Mills/Allen situation)

Big questions for me are can we keep Mills, and what's happened to Allen?

Didn't know that, I guess it saves money...although there will be clubs who use that approach to play the system if the rules on squad size aren't firm enough or strictly enforced.

I'm not sure whether Mills will stay, don't think his brother leaving will have much impact on his decision, I guess it depends on whether he gets a better offer from someone else. I haven't a clue what has happened to Allen...other than the fact that he had gone out on loan.

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spo.../135-players-sunderland-could-target-18491424

wonder how many of these they will sign, they might reach 100 players by end of next season :D

p.s. very lazy journalism, basically listing every premier league released player and reckoning that Sunderland could sign them all

Just read through that list and noticed that Mason Bloomfield has been released by Norwich. He was a sub striker for us all of last season. I think he started about five league games but he got a few goals from the bench so may be worth a punt by someone here.

Also noticed Leon Clarke has been retained by Sheff Utd That surprised me.

Further to my earlier post regarding Mason Bloomfield there are rumours he may be joing Southend.

No idea if true or not.

Brisley now officially signed on a 1 year extension, pleased enough was solid when Smith got injured (apart from the first five minutes he came on against Swindon!), outstanding against Northampton's aerial bombardment. Has a chance to claim a regular spot if Smudge does go.

We've released 9 players.

Dean Moxey, Craig Woodman, Aaron Martin, Lee Martin, Gary Warren, Brennan Dickenson, Lee Holmes, Jared Thompson and Jayden Richardson.

Don't even know who Jared Thompson is to be honest.

Sad to see Aaron Martin go. He will be a decent signing for anyone at this level, as will Brennan Dickenson who sadly couldn’t get into his stride after signing in January.

Dean Moxey leaving who is a City legend is also gutting, especially the way it happened with a sending off on Monday. I expect we may see him return in some capacity after he’s retired.

Lee Martin, who’s a bit Inconsistent at times, but still a decent player, will most likely get another L2 club.

Also really sad to see Lee Holmes go but he’s never fit nowerdays so no complaints. And a shoutout to Craig Woodman, not my most favourite player but he’s played over 250 games in 8 years so has been a good servant.

One thing is for sure, our average age of the squad has fallen dramatically as most of the players leaving are in their 30s.

Taylor says he’s only likely to sign 1 or 2 so we will be reliant on our academy products more than ever, is it could be a transitional season next year.

McCormack released. He's right up Coughlan's street (although not needed if Bostwick or Woodyard come off).

Id honestly have McCormack back here in a heartbeat.

As he is now a free agent, could we sign him and play him in our last few Championship games?

We have let go (unsurprisingly) of the majority of our out of contract players. Jordan Turnbull and Alan McCormack being the main eyebrow raisers. McCormack, when fit has been excellent. I assume thats the problem, hes been out for large periods of time and with finances being difficult for everyone now maybe its a luxury we cannot afford. Would have liked to see him become a player/coach though.

Turbull joined us when we were splashing the cash in a January window in L1 when we had some chinese investment. Curle has basically said he didnt want to offer his vastly reduced terms which he would have to have done, so he has gone also. Will do a job for anyone in L1 or L2, would liked to have seen him stay.

Other released players who people will be aware of are Andy Williams, David Cornell, Reece Hall-Johnson, Billy Waters, Paul Anderson.

I’d personally want Bostwick either way with Pearce being released.

Tom Conlon confirmed - 2 year deal, pleased with that, hes really grown with us and is a good option in the central midfield area. Local lad too.

Looks like the 6 verbal agreed have all done so and we are drip feeding the announcements over the coming days to be honest for dramatic effect!

Cullen signs a new one year deal, happy with that deal. Must have one of the best goals to start ratios in L2 last season!
