Are you happy how your club is handling retained lists?
We don't know what it is and probably won't find out until there is an absolute agreement that the season is definitely done and dusted...although we all know that it is. Several people have calculated that after cancelling all loans, in or out, we will have about ten players under contract. I would expect that the club have been working behind the scenes to try and secure the services of a number of the players whose contracts are due to finish at the end of June, the likes of McGinley, Shepherd, Rawson and Mills (Joe) should be kept if possible, not too bothered about many of the rest.

No complaints from our end. We've done it as early as possible to allow the players to plan and we, and no-one really, are in a position to increase current wages commitments past the end of their contracts because there's no clarity around anything.

The only player we're in discussions with is Ellis Chapman, an 18-year old who's come through the youth system and will count towards the home-grown rule but all the seniors will be released. With no decisions on this season or next season yet, start dates or when fans are allowed back into stadiums (even just phased re-entry), I'm not sure how clubs can be offering deals full stop. We don't even know what the market conditions for wages will be yet either.

As our CEO said, there wasn't a decision to make r.e. out of contract players because that implies there was more than one option, which there wasn't. The only option was to release.

Of course, if there's come clarity over the next month or so, then negotiations might be able to start taking place but I think most will wait for the bigger spenders to start and see where fees and wages are at and use that as a benchmark.

I think any new contracts have pay and bonuses at different levels depending on different scenarios of how/if/when any new season starts.

I am happy, we released it very early and had already done 3 or 4 deals we wanted in January for once to ensure we kept players.

Players we are keeping are as expected pretty much and with our vast improvement last season on the previous 2 seasons at this level continuing with the squad we have and just adding a bit more to it is key.

For once under the new ownership we are a professionally run club and one players want to be at which is nice!

Does this mean that you are committed to paying these players until there are games? And if so, can you (and indeed most League 2 sides) afford to do so?

If I understand correctly, take your time to sort the team beyond those already with contracts, makes sense to me.

The ones signed in Jan would be entitled to Furlough as per the rest as it was before the lockdown.

The ones who have been offered new deals I assume we will have to pay, maybe clauses within that but contracts run until end of June anyway and think they get paid until end of July under the terms of EFL contracts?

Financially (for once!) we are in a good place with the new owners and guess the Man City cup money will just now be used to get through this period as a buffer.

okay the cup run may have given you some wriggle room, but I am very sceptical that many clubs in this division can last that long. Especially as we are about to be joined by two clubs with apparently serious funding issues.

It all depends, the EFL have yet to agree how to finish this season, let alone start the next so a lot will depend on when it starts and if any fans can attend, saw something where the Grimsby owner was saying along the lines of they wont start the season until fans are in the grounds?

If clubs can’t afford to play out this season, how are they going to afford to play next?

No fans = no games

This is the crux of what I am saying. It strikes me as having near normal retained lists in what is an extraordinary time, is at best unwise. It feels like many clubs are sleepwalking into oblivion. I hope I am wrong.

Our retained list is probably pretty much the same as it would have been in normal circumstances. Think most fans would have kept Mike Jones but I don't think it's coronavirus that caused him to be released, just Chris Beech looking to clear out and build his own squad.

Not sure I’ve heard him him say that. Our players have agreed a 25% pay cut and I think they have quoted that this would enable the club to survive until next year without playing any games.

We have announced our released/retained list.

"The club has exercised options on Alfie Bates, Elijah Adebayo and Mat Sadler, who will move in to a Player/Coach role.

Out-of-contract players Danny Guthrie, Callum Cockerill-Mollett and Tom Leak have been offered new deals alongside second-year Apprentices Sam Perry and Joe Willis who have also been offered their first professional contracts.

Shay Facey, James Hardy, Gary Liddle, Mitch Candlin and Kory Roberts will all be released when their contracts expire on June 30th.

The players who are contracted for next season are:
Liam Roberts, Cameron Norman, Dan Scarr, James Clarke, Zak Jules, Jack Nolan, Stuart Sinclair, Liam Kinsella, Wes McDonald, Caolan Lavery and Josh Gordon.

Jack Rose, Cameron Pring, Rory Holden & Nathan Sheron have all returned to their parent clubs following their loans with the club."

So our released players:

Gary Liddle - Was very poor both in midfield and defence during the first half of the season and also had a poor relationship with the fans - he subsequently was loaned out to Hartlepool where he remained all season. Expect him to end up back there.

Kory Roberts - Such a shame, I personally would have kept him. Young defender who came through our system and looked like he would be the next big player through our academy until he had a double leg break 2 years ago in a pre-season friendly with Stoke. Had a long year out and last season he hardly played - think the injury really ruined him. I really hope he ends up somewhere that will give him time as he could still be a very, very good player. Composed and very quick central defender who can also play full back. Good luck to him.

James Hardy - Joined last season on a free from Fylde, actually played quite well IMO first few games but fell out of favour with DC quickly and was hardly seen again. Very strange one and from the outside it looks like they had a falling out, good little player though. Could do a job here in L2 for a bottom half team. Better through the middle than out wide.

Shay Facey - The only real surprising release, was our first choice right back most of the season and was a tidy little player. We do have cover in his position though with Cameron Norman who is a very steady if not spectacular player and DC's lovechild and namesake James Clarke - so I imagine he was cut as a cost cutting measure rather than for his ability. Wish him well.

Mitch Candlin - Bizzare player. Was promoted to the first team when he was 16 by Jon Whitney a couple seasons ago when none of our strikers could hit a barn door, he played okay but didn't score at all. When Whitney was sacked Mitch was sent out on loan upwards to Bolton with a view to buy, but in January they opted not to and he returned. He has hardly been seen since and has been very anonymous both in reserve games and when out on loan. Very much the correct decision to release him.

Loanees - Would love to get both Cam Pring and Rory Holden back from Bristol for next season, either permanently or on loan again. Pring was very good all season when fit and Rory was starting to come into his own in the last couple of months of the season with some fantastic performances through the middle. Jack Rose might be kept on if he is released by Southampton as he is a local lad and I am fairly certain this loan move was always with a view to make it permanent at the end of his contract - wouldn't say no to that. Sheron played a couple games and looked OK at best but didn't have too much time to bed in.

Extensions - Extremely delighted to keep Elijah Adebayo for another season, he looked like a right donkey through most of the season but he really started to find himself the last few months and added goals to his game. Season ended right at the wrong time for him as he looked like he would get 15+ even after a poor first half of the season. Hopefully he can keep that going next season even after the long lay-off.

Happy to see Mat Sadler in a player/coach role, suits him, he's one of those players who seemed to act and talk like a coach before coming one so a fantastic move. Very solid as a centre half too even at 35.

Also an extension for Alfie Bates is the least that he deserves, the lad was absolutely fantastic last season considering it was his first as a professional. I am surprised we haven't offered him a long term deal to tie him down but I suspect that may be because DC and his coaches want to keep him motivated and not get complacent in his development.

Offered - I hope very much that CCM accepts his new deal, another player from our academy who has been around for a few years but last season was by far his best. Had a very solid run in the side which coincided with our form picking up until picking up an injury. Very solid young LB and I hope he is first choice next season if we cannot get Cameron Pring back. Tom Leak was a first year pro CB last season who by all accounts did very well both in the reserve team and out on loan, I hope and imagine both him and CCM stays and I would be very pleased with that.

Danny Guthrie is the one that fans are split on a bit. Clearly he is class above this league in terms of his ability - it's just his fitness has been a major issue all season. Been a sick note. When he has played he brings an effortless class to the midfield but him playing has been few and far between. I think a lot of fans would have cut him loose for someone who is more reliable but DC must clearly believe he will be much fitter next season after a full season and pre-season at the club. No issues with him as a player though so I would be pleased to see him stay.

Transfers - I would say we are in a health position for next season with only 2 or 3 players needed to come in full time. A back up GK, an attacking midfielder (to replace Rory Holden) and a winger. In normal circumstances I would also like a LB, CB, CM and another striker but as squads will be trimmed down next season for all teams, that is all I would really want/expect.

Where did you hear the seven days bit, I’ve not seen that.

Edited to note that I have now seen the seven days from Lowe on PASOTI. Hard ball, but a good idea. Mayor has signed so we have six in contract now.

Did you keep most of your players when you came down last season - and is that why you've kept (or offered contracts to) most of them this time?
We nearly signed Fox after he left you last season.... played well pre-season - but we had a great midfield already...

I cannot remember exactly but we had about the same number. Several players were offered renewed contracts and declined. Our owner does not like offering many more than one year contracts, and those mostly to the youngsters. He calls more than one year contracts gearing - a debt. So, to answer your question we had a big turnover last year too. Be interesting to see how many of those offered contracts accept this year, a few more than last I expect.

Biggest shock is Shaun Miller was still contracted to us. Completely forgot about him.

I’d expect Hunt will retire, although he was fine for us and we relied on him for months due to injuries and he never let us down. Green would be a decent signing for anyone down here. Miller is guess is destined for the national league and the rest will be below that.

Seems we are doing ours in dribs and drabs.

George Francomb signs a two year deal at Crawley.

Happy with that as he is a solid player, nothing wow, but always puts a shift in.

It was Ollie that said that. Said we won't play for another year if it meant waiting that long for fans to come back. He's also said we won't survive this and that we're most well ran club he's ever worked at in separate interviews in the last month or so. It's the Holloway Show at BP now, he'll be in the media talking bollocks until we're back playing again.

Late on this but we released ours a while ago.

First team players out of contract this summer: Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, Cameron Burgess, Andy Butler, Jordan Clarke, Adam Hammill, James Horsfield, Rory McArdle, Kgosi Ntlhe, James Perch, Yann Songo’o, Levi Sutton.

Under-23s players out of contract this summer: Reon Potts, Jo Cummings, Jack Lambert, Omar Sanyang.
Under-23s contract offers have been made to:
Alfie Beestin, George Hornshaw, Adam Kelsey.

Contract options exercised on:
Andy Dales, Jordan Hallam, John McAtee, Mason O’Malley, Tom Pugh.
Already under contract next season: Harry Baker, Jacob Bedeau, Lewis Butroid, Ryan Colclough, Tom Collins, Abo Eisa, Alex Gilliead, Devarn Green, Harrison McGahey, Olufela Olomola, Jai Rowe, Kevin van Veen, Rory Watson.
Scholars offered professional terms:
Charlie Barks, Harry Jessop, Finley Shrimpton, Raynner Silva.

Hopefully this is the end of free spending Scunthorpe as all of our high earners that remained from L1 are now gone. The squad does look poor though, can see a similar season next year to this one.
