Wow, 21 players still under contract that is barking mad at this level
Not really, our starting 11 is pretty much sorted for next year barring we sell any players. I imagine we'll start next season with the same 11 that ended this season, anyone we sign will be back up.

We've announced our list.

Niall Canavan, Sean McAllister, Andrew Boyce and Gary McSheffrey have all been released, literally couldn't care about any of them. Delighted to finally see Canavan left.

Boyce will go to either Lincoln or Grimsby, Sean Mcallister to a League 2 Team(mentioned to a Notts supporting mate he'd be a good signing for them), McSheffrey who knows, depends on how much he wants in wages. Canavan Rochdale?

Seems sensible, in view of the rule changes re loans next season, and also in view of Scunny having ended the season strongly.

I think we've got 20 under contract, with a further four having been offered terms (including Niall Canavan from Scunny). The one concern is that the four we're waiting on are a goalie and three centre backs, so presumably these areas are also being scouted for alternatives.

A couple of names mentioned by the saner(!) posters on our MB are Aaron Martin (love to have him, but suspect he might get more money elsewhere) and, perhaps surprisingly, Marcus Haber, who has always played pretty well against us.

So based on a couple of games in 2009? He was great for us in this league alongside a tackler in John Welsh. A calm, experienced head and a great passer, was excellent when he came back into the side in the play-offs just gone. Played a key part in 2 promotions at this level.

What was the original assertion based on, if not a couple of games? How many times have you seen the best sides in this league play?

He doesn't offer us anything that our current CMs don't already offer us.

Really? you've never said.
I don't doubt that he can do a job a this level I should have added.

The fact that he's spent 5 successful seasons at this level (6 if you include his spell at Oldham), including two promotions and another two play-off campaigns.

I've seen Wigan, Burton and Walsall play quite a few times this season (all be it on TV), can't say i've been massively impressed by any of their midfielders, although Max Power & Sam Morsy are decent but they're in the Championship now anyway.

I'm confident he would add something to any squad at this level.

This is all guff and proves nothing. Tony Craig played his part in three promotions from this level and was a Championship regular for Brentford: he still ain't all that.

I think the sweeping statements are what are annoying. I would like a new CM next to Ben Thompson, but Neil Kilkenny is not an upgrade on any of our other CMs. That he did the biz is Preston's system is a credit to him and the club, but I reckon two 25 goal a season strikers probably helped quite a bit more.

Wouldn't surprise me if we go for Kilkenny should we lose Fleck. Him and Vincelot sitting would be decent.

It proves he's a good player at this level, as recent as last season, a bit different to basing an opinion on a few games 7 years ago and then deciding you don't rate a player from there after.

Kilkenny isn't an upgrade on Ed Upson? correct me if i'm wrong but I think clubs who usually win promotion have more than two midfielders to call on, usually ones who can offer different qualities.

Staggered we have let Aaron Martin go. Reda is a good player at this lever but he has had two injury prome seasons with us. J'OB fell out with Mowbray and Aaron Phillips had potential. Not bothered about the rest. At least half of these players were TM signings which is a tad worrying.
No it isn't really that worrying, Ramage, Lorentzon, Henderson, Hunt were all intended to be short term solutions to help us get over the line. Obviously they didn't do that but it was always unlikely any of them would be kept on further than the end of the season, it would be much more worrying had he decided to offer them a new contract.

I guess you would hope that Mowbray would have learnt from his mistakes this season and start building a more settled squad rather than a load of older, expensive bit part players (Joe Cole and Fortune spring to mind). Pretty staggered he managed to be so wildly inept after you were top of the pile earlier in the season. It was almost like he was playing football manager and was just signing players for the sake of it!!

Appraisal of Kilkenny extends beyond that to his Briatol City days. The Leeds example was more relevant to our current situation.

Upson doesn't play in the middle for us. Kilkenny isn't better than Williams and while a much better footballer than Abdou doesn't work nearly as hard, so it's difficult to see what he'd bring to our squad that we don't have already. Would much rather invest in a decent box to box midfielder, if they still make those.

He played for Bristol City in the Championship, where admittedly, he falls a little short as a regular starter, as would most midfielders in this league.

Quality box-to-box players at this level are few and far between, we got lucky finding Alan Browne at Cork. Can't say I know a great deal about Williams as I remember him playing in defence for MK Dons, point still stands though, I reckon Kilkenny would be a good addition to any squad in this league... whether they need him at this current moment in time is another matter.

He had Welsh, Browne and Johnson ahead of him last year but still made a big contribution. I think you're being overly critical based on a few games ages ago and are doing him a disservice.

Of that lot I'd hope to tie down

Gerrard
Wilson
Wilson
Dieng
Winchester

To go alongside

Coleman
Kelly.

Those not mentioned I ain't fussed about and can go.

That would give us potentially

Gk coleman
D wilson
D wilson
D gerrard
D
M dieng
M kelly
M winchester
M
F
F

In a perfect world we would get main and palmer to fill 2 of the free spots and let shez do the rest. From that though it's clear to see shez has much to do this summer. Keeping Gerrard would be a massive signing as it means we can go into next season with the same first choice back 5 if all goes well

Birmingham have released Lee Novak.

I imagine Chesterfield is his most likely destination but I hope that we go in for him.

Isn't Novak on 10k a week at the blues? I'd imagine he would go to one of the bigger spenders.

Apart from Robert I cant see many clubs interested in the others. Always rated Robert but seems he's fallen out of favour with Luke.

No surprises the 'gassy' 2 have been released. God knows why we signed Balmy in the first place - gopping

Do ya reckon it's possible to put together a promotion challenging team from all those released at this level?

Mike Jones and Joseph Mills would be our 2 contributions

'Despising' an opposition footballer for nearly a year based on a few dives or time-wasting or whatever is the behaviour of a sad sack is it not?

What did he do again, that has got you raging like a firing inferno anyway?

Personally I don't really rate him and think he'll be backup for Brophy next season.
