Sounds like the success went to their heads and they’ve thought they could demand the earth and Neville has told them to shove it.

Average inexperienced managers can only take a money driven team so far. Coming into national football is a whole different ball game. They need a much better quality manager to work with the much better quality of player that they will most likely sign.

Whilst I'm sure he'll be linked, I'm not sure Askey would actually be a good fit.

Askey early 2/1 favourite. Followes by Chris Casper 3/1, Graham Alexander 3/1, Richie Wellens 12's, John Sheridan 14's, then a great raft of people like Mellon, Scholes, Ince, Jim Bentley

They'll probably end up somewhere like Alfreton and get exposed for what they probably are - tactically unwise but very good at shouting and swearing.

Fortunately we have given them the wide berth and appointed Billy Heath who did play for us during his playing career. Delighted.

In that documentary I don’t remember them giving tactical advice in any of their team talks. Just variants of “were fookin betta than them lads” “win every fookin battle boys”.

Was about to say the same. Man-management didn't appear to be a strong point if that documentary was anything to go by. That kinda stuff might work at Sunday League level or when you only see the players for training a couple of times a week, but not in a FT environment.

They came across as a couple of glorified amateurs.

Not a wonder Nathan Arnold spent a couple of weeks on loan at Salford from us and didn't like it.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
To be fair to that Salford management team they did have previous success before Salford so must have something there........I think when below that Conf North/South level it seems just a hard working in your face type of approach does work very well.

but even with the promotions they may struggle to get another job, a lot of resentment to Salford and the entire set-up top to bottom has been fake sh*te for the last 3 seasons that i think many clubs from Conf North down would be worried about their ego ruining any chance of it working.

Stalybridge may be a short-term option for them as it is local and available, but they are probably expecting something bigger.

Marcus Bignot the new manager at Guiseley along with former Alfreton manager/assistant Russ O Neil as joint manager with Alfreton legend Paul Clayton as assistant. Very interesting.

So then, the Salford duo have been appointed here....

Will be entertaining at least.

Not a massive surprise. I'd imagine it's probably due to the budget being slashed and Pennock realising the that he wouldn't be able to build a squad that he first thought. Plus, if our team is going to be more North West based I'm not sure if he'd have the knowledge of what's out there in our area given his previous jobs in management have all been South.

A shame really, he did a bloody good job of keeping that awful squad we had in the league, and the majority of fans had a lot of time for the guy - thoroughly decent bloke.

On to our fifth manager in about 3 years and fourth in the last twelve months. I'd imagine Holt will get it as it is a cheaper option being already under contract and he's wanting to get in on the management game.

Jay Saunders has popped up as a surprise candidate as our new boss. Maidstone fans, what's he like?

He had an interview and was offered the job a few weeks back. Turned it down though..... Yes I'm aware Askey was still there, but your owners were very unamused with him and wanted him gone a while (despite last seasons heroics).

Edit to add: Can only assume you've offered a few more £ / come back in.

I guess that explains how quickly this has all happened then. It's not a secret that Askey and the chairman didn't get on at all, to the extent that they never actually spoke to each other. So not surprised that his replacement was lined up in advance. Seems a weird move for Saunders to make, having to relocate up north to take on a job that isn't exactly stable, and at a club no bigger than the one he's currently at.

Absolute Maidstone legend. Yet two seasons with lean patches have seen feint hearts sporadically calling for his head on the forum. My opinion is we have got the best from Jay by sticking with him during hard times. Would Macc do that? Last I heard he's on holiday, so not in a position to sign players or resign.

We are a bigger club than Maidstone. Just won the Conference and in the Football League. It would be a great career move for him.

Not sure if serious.

At the risk of being whooshed, not sure how leaving a tinpot side to join a football league team is weird. Stable job? Your last manager was involved at the club in one way or another for about 65 years.

Basically it was rumoured he had an interview with you lot ages ago -Around Xmas/Jan kind of time (Can't be sure on specifics). Anyway, he definitely definitely had an interview 3/4 weeks ago in which he was offered the gig. Your owner, well whoever deals with this side of things is obviously a long time admirer.

Obviously you'll know more about your club than me, but the Salford/Askey Clusterfuck was the final straw (Askey was going there till it fell apart last min).

As for cub size Jays football stock is still very high, he's worked miracles with us. Unfortunately we're victims of own success as we're still scrambling to become a National League club behind the scenes (Not knocking us here at all) - Jay needs to move to develop further.

Any new manager is going to be given time here, but whether he'd get any sort of budget is a complete unknown. My point about it being unstable is that he'd be moving from a settled job at Maidstone to a club with hardly any players and staff, which has a track record of not paying wages on time. But you're right in saying that we have greater appeal now we are in the league so maybe its a risk worth taking for a young ambitious manager.

The Salford thing is news to me, but again not a surprise. Seems like you know more about Macc than any of our own fans. :bg1:

I sure hope this doesn't happen. Saunders is a club legend, without him we'd probably be down in the Isthmian league still. He just kept us up in a season where both our best goalscorers left at xmas. Words do not do justice to how important he's been for us.

It's strange in the fact we have just appointed Steve Watt as assistant manager, so I assumed Jay was building his backroom team. But then, if this move was anticipated, maybe he was brought in as successor. If Jay goes, he does so with the good wishes of Maidstone fans. For newer fans, he's the only manager they've ever known.
