100 per cent agree. yes geography is a typically a core part, but the fans are also core to this. I suspect you would struggle to persuade Palace and Brighton fans they do not have a derby/intense rivalry.

I think who is a rival/Derby can change over time. I am led to believe that in the dim and distance past of living janners their rivalry was more with Torquay than Exeter.

Yeah, our traditional one was with Col U but that was mainly due to a bunch of incidents back in the 90s and obviously nothing to do with geography - anyone under 30 will barely have seen us play Col U, let alone witnessed a grudge match between the two.

It would be good to have a proper rival, but you can’t just grow one, like…and there are reasons why none of the other potential candidates are real rivals.

Oddly, back in the early 2000s, our players and QPR’s seemed to hate one another, which made for some spicy games, but clearly QPR weren’t going to hang around in the third tier forever, so all that’s long since faded.

What a load of shit you've just spouted. When you live in the same city its not just when the clubs meet twice a season. It becomes a daily thing even with next door neighbours hating each other. Plus organised meetings between the 2 groups in local pubs.
I legit couldn't go out of my house for a week after getting beat by the teds. I'd have loved the 30 miles distance someone like Swindon and Oxford have.
Obviously im blinded as ive always lived in Bristol, but I cant imagine hating another club outside my City. I'm sure I would I just cant imagine it.
Also gasheads who have moved away seem to come back hating them less and less. Just look at Holloway.

...Just look at Holloway.
Talking of whom...he was on the Adrian Chiles show on R5 yesterday lunchtime...was a really good listen, quite funny too. I know he tends to be a bit marmite but he has always been someone in football who I like and respect...possibly more so after listening to him yesterday.

Anyway - back to the actual game, Morecambe at home for us.

You can’t take anything for granted with a side at the bottom who are scrapping for their lives - we ended Cambridge’s shit run of form on Tuesday but I’ll be very pissed off if we slip up badly twice in a week.

Ainsworth pointed the finger squarely at the defence on Tues and they won’t want a second bollocking.

I assume your mate is under 30 if he thinks Luton is the derby.

The younger supporters haven’t seen this derby as they were too young. They sing about it every week but will finally get to experience it tomorrow.
Jim is early 50's.

I’d like your wisdom to help to unpack this a bit. I think your term the same city can be stretched as a concept. Bolton are in Greater Manchester, so as Manchester is a city, presumably it is a Derby when they play all other sides in Greater Manchester?

Are not the boundaries of cities some what practically flexible? I remember driving through Leeds to get to Bradford and it was hard to tell when you were in one place or the other.

If derbies can only be played between teams in the same city, such as Liverpool, Sheffield and the like, what Is the correct term from games between other clubs? non-derbies, un-derbies or what?

Ta very muchly.

Just to confirm then, you’re saying Newcastle v Sunderland, Ipswich v Scum and Pompey v Southampton are it derbies? Rivals but they’re not derbies? That’s what you are saying?
I agree with him.

The games above are huge to fans of both sides but IMHO are not derbies in the truest sense.

Sky have hyped up Man U v Liverpool as a derby when it's a grudge match.

Christ they put Palace v Brighton as one.

But it's all about opinions

A side at the bottom scrapping? We were bang out of form but we won’t be a side at the bottom scrapping. We are a point away from you and 3 off 7th.

You weren’t at the bottom, but Morecambe are.

Will be keeping a close eye on results today. Some good looking matchups and Charlton are very strong at home.

Chance for those below to close the gap for a couple of days (at least).

I have been fearing the worst (result, performance, cards and idiot fans) about my first Cambridgeshire Derby for weeks now. But come the day I'm feeling much more positive.

2-2 and no red cards.

Why ? I've even known some fans who still count Camb City as your derby.

City haven't played in Cambridge for nearly 9 years.

Their new ground, which they should move to in 2023, is at Sawston - 5 miles outside the City.

Why is Ipswich v Norwich not one? The East Anglian derby, East Anglia historically formed by just Suffolk and Norfolk. Both have one club (of significant size).

It’s a derby.

It's different counties and 40 mile apart.

Nah

Collins Dictionary:

"A derby is a sporting event involving teams from the same area or city"

Seems like Rovers fans are being a bit special about this..

I mean, 2 Rovers fans disagree, as does a Wednesday fan - I agree with you lot, but hey let’s just make incorrect generic statements, eh?

By the definition though - What defines the same area? Cheltenham & Plymouth a derby? How far does an area stretch? For me there’s a difference between a derby and a rivalry

It’s variable compared to different teams situations for example Plymouth and Exeter and the East Anglia clubs are 45 miles away. Imagine for example most clubs in the Midlands/NW/London have 4 or 5 plus clubs within that radius so it’s more alien to us to consider it a derby.

A cross city derby is more intense as it’s commonly a cross family divide, split workplaces/schools and neighbourhoods. It’s probably an intensity in this division Bristol Rovers, Vale and Wednesday only understand.

A derby for different towns is more town v town so probably not so intense at family level in terms of knowing lots of the opposition fans but has its own intensity nonetheless.

6 changes from Tuesday. Massive call by DC. No Smith for the first time in years is a blow must be injury related. Wilson on the bench as well. It’ll either be a disaster or one of those DC masterclasses we occasionally see (such as last weekend when he rested our strike force) with nothing in between! Big game for Cass. In fairness we do need to manage Wilson and he worked his cubes off Tuesday.

In Dazzler we trust I guess.

8 out injured for today, our starting 11 looks pretty solid despite that but our bench is very weak

Got to fancy it. Derby were very tame against us. They sat deep to hit us on the counter at home which was bizarre! Fancy you’ll do them today.
