First club in the north west to install floodlights........

But not first to play a match under floodlights apparently. It seems that Southport Central played South Walton in front of a crowd of 3,000, "illuminated by the Wells Patent Limelight," on 31 December 1889.

The 7.30 kick off was delayed because, although the visitors were there, Southport were still down the pub - they "had a reputation for lateness at that time." Originally a re-scheduled Lancashire League match (inaugural season), the visitors lodged an objection before kick-off and a friendly was played, Southport losing 2-1.

It was more than 70 years before floodlights were erected at Haig Avenue - and I think I remember them visiting Holker Street in the NorthWest Floodlit League in around 1967/68.

We beat them to that.

Even though floodlights weren't installed at Gigg Lane until 1953 we played a game under the same "wells patent limelight" back on 5th November 1889.

We were so shit by then you could have played us the same night and still got the same score.

We were the first team to score following a free kick being moved forward 10 yards for dissent. Shrewsbury opening day of the 2000-2001 season.

In 1998, our bacon butties put us at the top of "Colman's Football Food Guide" league table. We still go on about them but at present we'd probably struggle to get in the top 50 - although the Habbin (especially the Balti Pies) seem to better than the rest of the ground.

Pools and Wycombe were the only current L2 sides in the top 20. Oxford were a place above Wembley at 88.

Except for emergencies, I tend to avoid the stadium offerings on my travels these days. However, (beer sometimes takes priority over food pre-match) Burton's faggots or pie and peas deserve special mention for their quality and value, even though they fall far short of the non-stadium offerings available at places like Dagenham's pie & mash shops or the meatballs at Tranmere's Villa Venezia.

I did not know that, just been on Google Earth and Wikipedia to learn more, after London, Portsmouth is the most densely populated city......you'd think in my 50 years I'd have known that... Do they do trips around the island?

Brian Clough's 1st game as a manager at Hartlepool was a pre-season at Eton Park against Burton Albion. The Southern league cup holders were then managed by his old mate from his playing days at Middlesbrough, Peter Taylor. Later that season he joined Cloughie and the rest is history !
