No official approach has been made from other clubs that has been announced. Been favourite for every job going though as you mentioned.

I see... think he has to think long and hard about it before going, has a good thing going at Northampton.

I disagree about it being disrespectful.

Appleton said that Oxford were the best footballing side in the league. A statement already made by Wilder in February.

Compare that to Wilder's talking about being "punted" Bowery but his wages are too high, that some teams just down the road in the league need to get promoted this season.

Appletons is a positive statement whereas Wilder always feels the need to be negative. The fact it seems to have grabbed the headlines is because of the way they have reacted on their bus...

I would be interested to know what other teams in this league are thinking?

Nah, said we were the best team. I'm a huge fan of Appleton as we all are, but Northampton were. Do agree about Wilder's negativity and I'm not excusing his bitter statements. Pity it wasn't reflected in his team selections though - how come we got Asa Hall and Simon Heslop on the wings at times and they got Ricky Holmes?!

If Appleton had have said 'best footballing team', I'd agree 100%. We play a fluid system with plenty of freedom that's more reliant on the quality of footballer, as opposed to 'executing a plan' so to speak. So it's slightly easier on the eye, as much as it can be in League Two. I also think if we'd had Adam Smith and they'd had our goalkeepers, we'd have won the league bloody easily.

Well all i'm going to say -- Northampton won the league ( easily ) so therefore must be the best team.

What do you think?

I mean it's time we bring this thread back up and start talking about the teams at the top right?

Any surprises in the top 5?

I don't think there is, apart from Portsmouth not running away with it!

Should we not create a new thread, this thread is full of last season's bollocks.

We normally don't till January mind you.

As for the Experimental 3-6-1 chart, the expected goals model does assume you have the quality at both ends of the pitch to turn chances into goals / prevent chances becoming goals, ultimately it's just a more sophisticated way to say which team created the better chances than simply using shots on/off target, but it's still just shots. You can create 5 expected goals worth of chances each and every game, but if, for example, the man you're entrusting to turn those chances into goals is Craig Curran then you're not going to get very far.

The fact that Pompey are, by this method far and away the best team in the league just means they create good chances AND prevent opponents from creating chances against them. On a single game, or over a few games then if a team hasn't scored as many as they should have or have conceded more than they should have, it might genuinely mean they've just been a bit unlucky and will come good in the end, but the fact Pompey are so so far ahead yet only 5th in the table after 13 games, and you start to think they're either not very good at finishing, or have a dodgy keeper.

No, obviously it isn't. Looking at the date when this thread was started last season might give you some idea.

Why not? There is an obvious divide in quality from the top 5 in this league to the rest!!

I disapprove of this tempting of fate Carver :told:

Come on Shoddy, you really think that whatever shit I post on some internet forum is going to fuck up our season?

Get a grip of yourself!

Really? Yet 6th place are 1 point behind 5th place. The massive divide between the top 5 and the rest doesn't appear to be translating to a massive divide in points totals.

Yeah just like last season when 7th placed AFC Wimbledon beat 4th and 5th placed Accrington and Plymouth to go up.

Funny looking back at what the Wombles were saying when this thread was started... but seriously we need to stop this madness, discussing who is going to get promoted in October! Also, when we do discuss it, it gets its own thread.

I have spoken!

Hopefully when said thread is created, we will be an even firmer fixture in the automatic places.

This thread should be locked. New one should be started some time in December.

Anyway Carver, a little task for you now. You can start the promotion thread on December the 1st, then it'll have your name on and you can give it a hilarious fred title about how shit Wycombe are or something.

Just to be on the safe side carver, maybe PM Shoddy the thread title and opening post. A lot can happen between now and 1st December, especially when you're out on licence.

Saw something recently where Bristol Rovers and Northampton were nowhere near the top 3 at this point last season. I'm happy enough with where we are, barring 3 defeats up in the North West we've been pretty decent and look as good as last season if not better. Our defence is what will decide our outcome for May, we're still abit shaky and have a mistake in us. We need Talbot back asap.

Surprised Crawley are so high, they were garbage at Fratton. Grimsby have started well but not seen them yet to comment. Plymouth, Donny, Luton will be up there at the end of season. Expect Carlisle to finish top 7 but think top 3 will be too much.

We're looking like a top 3 team right now I'd say. Confidence is higher than it's been for years, we've still not lost yet and have managed to achieve the notorious three wins on the bounce. Too early to say we'll be able to stick it out as we need to see how we handle our first defeat if and when it comes, but at the moment I think we've more than earned our top 3 spot and arguably could be a bit higher had we turned some of the draws into deserved wins. We've also already played Portsmouth and Doncaster away as well as having a few easier games still to come in the next month or so.

I take what Pompey fans say with a pinch of salt as they've not really seen us play with 11 men this season, assuming that they're basing their opinion of us on our visit to Fratton Park.

Just from what I've seen on various match freds here, it looks like Plimuff, Donny, ourselves, Pompeii and Looton are playing better football than most of the other teams around, but I think people obviously look at us and think 'how they hell have they sneaked into that little group'.

I could of course be talking utter bollockshite, it is only October after all. kill this damn thread.

That Pompey fan say's that 3rd place would end up being too much for a little club like us, yet it has been too much for them for each year they have been down here and been expected to finish top!

As for this thread Shoddy, if muppets like you didn't keep posting on it then it would go away.

He didn't say 'little club like us' just that he didn't see us as capable of it.

I'm sure he meant it though as he must of looked at our tinpot history, our crumbling old ground, our pathetic transfer record fee and he obviously found out that our club owners are clueless old men who actually run it like an old men's club. Add to that our shitty home attendances.
