So let's see what happens Saturday ! Will be a good indicator whether our new signings can improve the number of goals and our home form, which will be needed if we're to mount a serious play off challenge. Clearly only 4 points off 4th, it's certainly possible.

Yes, Barnet away will be a good test for us.

I was surprised we came behind to beat Cambridge away 3-1 the other week which was already a bonus result in my mind. Anyhing here would be a real bonus.

That folk are actually saying "we'll be doing well to get something at Barnet" is rather a surprise, but whereas I can't speak for everyone, I think it's a nice surprise.

Here is where we're at on the morning after deadline day.

As said previously we've been no where near good enough for 2 months now. Will our January signings make the difference? Well after losing Wyke we'd better hope Proctor or Waring can score the goals. I have a bit of faith in Proctor to be fair. We need goals due to the pure shitness of our defence.

Liddle should be a good acquisition, however the fact we haven't brought in a left back despite it being a problem position for the past 2 months and Grainger still being at least 4-6 weeks away from a return is quite frankly a disgrace.

Defensively we still look the same shambles as we have done for a while now. No clean sheet in 4 months says it all and that doesn't look like changing any time soon barring 90 minutes of sheer luck.
Midfield is weak until Jones returns (assuming Liddle will have to play centre back). Fuck knows who is going to play in there with Joyce on Saturday. We don't even have McKee now. It's a worry.

Are we weaker than a month ago? Definitely
Will we make top 3? No chance
Will we make top 7? I'm not convinced by our squad. I'm not totally ruling it out yet but its not looking good. A lot will depend on the set of strikers and their ability to get the goals to cover for our defensive frailties.

Not looking promising.

BULL SHIT!!!

We've got one of the best managers in this league still and we've still lost the least games and even when we go on a shit run we are still in the top 3!

If we drop out of the top 3 and move away from it then by all means be a negative nelly as much as you want because that wouldn't be good enough, but let me ask you this, if at the start of the season you were told that by February we would be 3rd, only lost 3 games and only behind the likes of Doncaster and Plymouth, would you still start crying then?

Who is crying?

I'm giving an honest view of us. We have no left back, we haven't kept a clean sheet since beginning of October and now we've lost the goal scorer that was bailing out our inept defence. We've been poor recently and we've now weakened the squad.

As I clearly said if the 2 new strikers do the business and replace Wyke's goals then we could still stay top 7.

Well Curle does have his team sat 3rd in the league with arguably a worse squad than a lot of teams below, so it's not as much of a ridiculous statement as you Mansfield are making it out to be.

I guess it's one of those arguments you could have all day long. All managers have lucky seasons I suppose. He achieved little with Mansfield or Notts county - but maybe he's improved under warnock at QPR. Has he been one of the better managers this season, yes. Is he one of the better managers in general? Nah.

It really isn't, I'd say there's at least 5 clubs with a larger budget to work with in this division, yet we've been sat in the automatics all season. The management team as a whole are very good at this level. He's obviously got his flaws, but every single manager in the world does too.

As for our chances this season, I'd be much more optimistic if all of our injured players returned.

I'm not fussy, just Jones and Grainger would do. However Grainger is supposedly another 6-8 weeks away which makes it all the more frustrating that we haven't brought in a left back.

I'm kind of with you, just I can see why people would say he's one of the better managers in the league. I actually don't think he's that good, just average. But average is a god send compared to the shite managers we've had over the previous 6 years in league one.

You'd assume so, Football Managers, like pretty much every other professional out there will improve with experience

Oh dear. What a dreadful 24 hours or so. Lose a great keeper and get one that dropping clangers and giving up goals within minutes. Lose at home to a third from bottom team (respect - not knocking you guys) just when the stars have aligned and we can somehow magically be within touching distance of an auto spot. The stars instantly realign to normal and we're now potentially clinging to a play off spot if games in hand go for our opposition.

Then we top it off and sign the undoubted single most laughed at striker on this forum and laud him as someone we've been after for a while......................................:ffs:

We aren't a mentally strong enough group of players. Jones sort of touched upon it last night, but we've had a few games in his tenure where if we won we would have really catapulted ourselves into contention for things and we always lose them.

We also show very little signs of being able to put a run together like Exeter/Wycombe have. We do it in short bursts and the promptly lose one to a team you wouldn't expect and were suddenly adrift of the pace again. It's playoffs at best for us, and really failing to make the playoffs would be a big failure.

I think Nathan Jones is the one to blame here for last night's home defeat. Why start a keeper who has only just joined the club, even more so when it's a home match in front of 7000 home fans? We've all seen outfield players having mares in their first game, but get away with it because there's a teammate coming to their rescue. Not so when you're a keeper.

It wasn't that simple really due to the timing of it and the emergency loan rules. If you are interested a guy on outlaws posted a long email from I presume someone involved in the process who went into the why's and what fors, but it isn't as simple as just playing Craig King if we wanted proper keeper cover for the rest of the season.

Taking a leaf out of the Martin Allen management book. He picked up our new loanee keeper at the M4 services on the way to the game against Bristol Rovers

Current form, recent signings ect I genuinly feel somone is going to have to move aside and make room for us in the playoffs, not felt this good to be stag since the 70's.

As much as Mansfield's form is good and they've made some decent signings, this wouldn't be the first time that stags fans have been guilty of premature ejaculation over their team.

Just read it, cheers. WSV is one of the ITK guys right? You're right, it's pretty complicated and not as black and white as I first thought. Nathan Jones is excused then ;)

WSV is probably the only ITK on there! Sometimes he is a bit OTT in his defence of the club for me (he will often massively over rate new signings and our younger players IMO) but he does seem to know what he is talking about.

'Kin hell, if any lad went as long "without" as long as it was when Mansfield were good, he'd be a desperate lad! Lol

It's rather a break from the norm having a decent manager, a decent chairman and a decent squad. I don't think we've ever had all 3 together, so if some get a little excited, then it's probably warranted.

For me, I'm just happy right now to be nowhere near the relegation zone, in the top half (just) and be on a decent run of form. I'm not sure what the ambitions of others are.

Quite happy with our dealings.

2 Attacking young lads from non-league with potential. Our primary striker bagged.

Shifted out some fringe players and saved a few quid from the budget (probably redirected to cover Doyle).

Optimistic for the rest of the season, assuming Doyle finds his Chesterfield form under Cook.

Keith Curle being considered one of the best in the league is a new one to me.

He knows how to beat fat Steve Evans team 5-2 so I think that settles it.

I don't think there is any doubt at all that evans is better than curle. There's not even any debate
