All very tight - if we were to win our game in hand (at home to Wycombe next Tuesday) then you'd have seven teams within six points of each other. I'm clinging on to the fact that our home record is good and we still have to play Doncaster, Plymouth, Luton, Portsmouth, Mansfield and Wycombe at home.

It's so nice to be in the promotion mix again, in 10+ years we have only been pushing for promotion twice and they were both in the conference.

I'm just hoping that when the run does end we can react accordingly and keep up the pressure.

I saw that... you should explain release clauses to the one who suggested selling Wyke was an indicator we had no ambition. It's not possible these days to have a young player with potential in your squad without there being a release clause.
Personally I don't care if you do or do not have ambition (and like you I think it is odd point for someone to make), the point I was making is that what does matter is that is an extra hurdle for you get over. Moreover, while we had injuries last year, we did not see our main scorer go elsewhere. For me on the outside what I see is a team who I thought were a real threat to us become one who, at the moment, are not and it is hard to fathom why.

Well I think you showed a pretty good understanding of it in your original post about our thin squad. In the past couple of months we lost Mike Jones for eight weeks (back now), Jason Kennedy for six weeks, Danny Grainger for ten weeks and counting and Charlie Wyke to Bradford.

Jones was one half of a midfield pairing with Luke Joyce that was probably the main reason we were doing so well (our goalscoring ability being just a secondary reason). Jones and Joyce were like our Vieira and Petit.

Grainger was our left back, captain and a big part of our attacking threat, one of the top goal-providers in our squad, good at putting the ball to Nicky Adams in dangerous positions as well as creating goals out of set pieces.

We had no adequate back-up in either of those players' positions so when they were injured (crocked by Nathan Jones I prefer to think) not only did we lose all the specific advantages they provided but we wound up playing people out of position in their spaces and it had an impact on players like Joyce and Adams who were benefiting from the partnerships they had with the players around them.

Wyke and Kennedy have scored I think 27 goals combined this season, that's a lot of goals to lose out of the squad, it's more than Accrington Stanley have scored. Statistics show that Jabo and Shaun Miller are still among the most effective goalscorers in the division, and we've probably done well to get Proctor on but there's still going to be some adjustment as we had become good at creating chances Wyke can score from, now we have to learn to create more chances Jabo/Miller/Proctor can score from.

Ultimately none of these highly rated players came cheap, and we're not a well off club, we have no significant source of investment so the thin squad was probably the price we had to play for bringing in the likes of Adams, Brisley and Jones. The back-ups we did bring in, the likes of Penn, McKee and Wright will have been cheap to bring in and pad out our squad with what money we had left, and when it came down to it, Curle felt he couldn't rely on them.

Well considering we are only 3rd and definitely out of the promotion race because we are apparantly so shite, we do however have a good record against the teams who are in the top 8 of the league and we have beaten both Doncaster and Plymouth who are above us.

Let's see where we're at after this horrendous run of fixtures (on paper).

I'm not really hopeful. I just don't think we're consistent enough these days and sooner or later it will catch up with us. We could really do with stringing 3 wins in a row or something but can't see it.

You've got to believe man!

But yeah the next run of games are vital, even if we draw a few of them that would be good enough just as long as we win most of the remaining easier looking games.

Some crazy results and last minutes/injury time was eventful in several games - quick count of 13 goals with five minutes or more left

After getting thumped by Blackpool:
Well folks it looks like we're definitely that team who fucks up half way through and turns into a relegation form team! :dis:

Who wants 3rd place? It's up for grabs because we obviously don't want it.

We're sorry for punching above our weight, please forgive us L2!

I was just so incensed by that Blackpool match that I said some silly things but so what it's nothing new and if there is anyone to blame it's hellogregory because he's a negative influence on most of us Carlisle lot!

You've only been on this forum for a few days so how is hellogregory to blame for being a negative influence on you? :dk:

Humongous few games coming up for us - Doncaster, Plymouth and Carlisle coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Big night for Carlisle, well done.

Said you'd throw a spanner in the works and get a win!

4 home goals against Accrington was probably expected given our recent form, just probably didn't expect them to get 4 also! But very encouraging to get a point when 2-0 and 3-1 down. Especially with the following pack not having a good night

Perhaps our fans will calm their skin a little. This team of ours is decent but we're a long way off the finished product. Our fans make me chuckle. We win a few games and we're world beaters, we have an off night and we're hopeless. They take schizophrenia to Fight Club type proportions.

Just let Evans build his side and hold the immediate expectations. We're playing catch-up, so the fans should allow time for evolution on the field. I had guys around me last night in danger of hospitalisation through combustion because we were losing against a decent looking Accy team. What's with the self-righteous bollocks? You have to work hard, consistently and earn credit; we've had 6 decent weeks of performances.

I genuinely think that we can finish anywhere between third and twelth. Personally I intend to just enjoy the climax of the season, after waking up from the comatose of the first five months of the season.

Agreed, i'd mentioned that on here a few times previously. I've always had the cautious approach, which can be a good and bad thing, decent now, maybe not so in the last days of Murray where I was more vocal. The football on offer before Christmas wad diabolical.

Whereas neither of us are arguing anything different, it'd be a shame not to allow fans a little bit of hope given the style of play and positive approach compared to the 2 previous managers in this league. Our home games remaining allow us to state that if we do well in those we've a real chance.

I've always been the view of this season would be a massive, massive bonus if we hit the play-offs as it wasn't expected (and still isn't) but we're building for next season - next season could and should be a decent one.

The season has already upturned dramatically, as Adam says. A good run in this division can place you very quickly - perhaps Stevenage are the next club to take up the baton and go on a run?

Expectations at Field Mill have climaxed to bursting point, such to the level that characters in the stands go apoplectic when a side is turning us over. Fans have to gauge their reactions against current form of individuals and the team. Though despite this, most of the crowd stuck by the team last night and the atmosphere was fantastic - though a lot of that was charged by poor officials. There's nowt like a crap ref to get a Tuesday night crowd going.

Has anyone noticed that the current top 5 teams are the ones who have more or less been the top 5 for most of the season and yet we are all so miserable and not as happy as you'd expect fans of a team who are up at the top end.

Doncaster fans clearly don't like their manager and blame him for why they're down here, Plymouth are used to fucking it up so you can understand their pessimism, we Carlisle fans (One in particular) think we're shit and punching above our weight and we'd come straight back down if we went up, Luton are quite similar to us in the way that they believe they're also quite shit but somehow still in with a chance and Portsmouth are expected to win this league every season but never do so you can imagine how their fans feel about that and the pressure put on the club.

Yet the fans who seem the most pleased on here are of clubs who are always just in and outside the play offs after going on great runs to get into them, only to fall short as soon as they come within touching distance of 3rd place!

Certainly in our case it just comes from over-inflated expectation and the pressure that breeds as a result of that. I feel like we're perhaps just beginning to strike the right balance though, between the fans/players/staff.

I'm not unhappy how could I be given our league position. Fergie is definitely to blame for last years relegation no denying that but given the fact I thought we would finish 10th this year at present all is rosey

It's been that way most of the season... despite brief moments of elation I think the closed-shop nature of the top five earlier on the season made everyone more worried about throwing it away and less appreciative of where they are. Notwithstanding that Donny fans still think they should be in the Championship, Plymouth fans expect to bottle, Carlisle fans are moaning nancies and Pompey fans are never gonna be happy down here.

Luton fans seem their characteristically cheery selves at least, especially following last night.

Have you not read their comments on their win last night? It was basically "We won yes but we were utter garbage".

Turning up appears to be enough for a win over Hartlepool

Last season we had Northampton who were over the moon at not going bust and destroying the league straight after, there were Oxford fans who were very joyous and quite cocky but with good reason because they were finally a quality team to be feared and then we also had Bristol Rovers going for a 2nd consecutive promotion. Plus Accrington and Wimbledon were not expected to do much either.

This season there arent really any fairy tales happening or anything much to shout about at the top, so we've all adopted Plymouths and hellogregorys shitty dull attitude. :(
