I'm thinking we have to beat Carlisle, then Morecambe and then win our game in hand over Crawley if we're to make a serious challenge for automatic promotion.

But we're just not consistent enough.

How are we only 2 points off play offs after only winning one in our last 7 games?

Someone on our forum has posted the average league position of remaining fixtures. Looks like Mansfield have the toughest run in.

The six pointers are coming thick and fast at this time of the season.

Donny v Luton yesterday, Carlisle v Donny and Plymouth v Exeter in the past week and then next weekend we have Carlisle v Pompey and Luton v Plymouth

As I said in our match thread we were three points of play offs at end of Jan and played a game more. Since then we have took 5 points from 15 and still only 3 points away and now played the same amount.

Seems nobody wants 7th, and the team in who goes unbeaten for last 4 or 5 games will probably take it.

Like I've just commented on another thread, Donny and Plymouth are home and hosed; if Carlisle, Luton and Pompey don't take third and the play off then they'll never go up. The rest of the division really is that average.

I prefer that to be fair. I think we've just had a month of being flat track bullies, who aren't actually all that. If we finish in the top seven then we'll have earned it and are better than this fan actually reckons we are.

It does not yet feel a done deal for us. In the past few weeks against Yeovil, Orient and Hartlepool we got precisely one point. Had we got four out of those I would have felt pretty confident. Last Saturday we were imperious against Exeter, I was literally purring when I ate my dinner that night. And then was had Tuesday and yesterday to upset my equlilibrium. Instead of pulling away with all the so called easier games, we now have to do it against top of the table teams. Plus Donnie seem to be stalling, I think it is still all to play for amongst the top five or six.

You're going to have a blip though; Donny and Carlisle have had theirs too. You've a nice points gap to fourth and nobody has the consistency that the top 3 have had to suggest that someone will emerge from the pack. You're just having a bout of pre-promotion anxiety that only clubs in your position will notice.

There's nobody, from Pompey down, who has done enough to warrant any deserving promotion credentials. There's a whole bunch of inconsistent also-rans who are just a bit meh.

The top three has stayed the same for a long while now, but it's still very tight up there. Our game against Portsmouth next week is set up to be a cracker, if we win we'd go 9 points clear of them.

If we don't suffer anymore key injuries I think we'll stay top three, but I think it's going down to the wire

What you say is very rational, but we have a fair few six pointers coming up. If we draw them all we are fine, lose them all and things look a tad different. This is our second slump this season, so hopefully we can turn it around, if the team that played Exeter turns up I am confident, if not, far less so.

What's exciting for us right now is that we're going through our tough run in and our first two games of that have been 2 wins against top of the league Doncaster and away at Wycombe who were apparently the best home team in the league until yesterday.
It's even better beating good sides rather than being like all them play off chasing teams who get a good run of wins going after just beating bottom of the league teams and then suddenly they fancy themselves against anybody, but as soon as that run ends they start sulking and realise that unless they can consistently get results against the top teams and not just against the shite down at the bottom like Hartlepool and Notts County then they aren't good enough.
Grimsby are alright but the likes of Mansfield, Exeter, Wycombe, Cambridge and Colchester all thought they had what it took and now they're crying and wetting their beds because they are inferior to the top 5 and could not make it into the top 3 or even keep up with us. So you'd best know your place from now on you tinpot fucks!

I'd say we're now at 60% Carver.

Sorry but I've been watching some of the comments made by these deluded fans over the last few weeks, especially the Mansfield lot and they need told when they're thinking they're better than what they are. It seems to be the Steve Evans effect!

And so what have the Exeter Wycombe Colchester and Cambridge fans been saying to get you goat then?

Maybe the fact that some of their teams have been more successful recently than his?

Your team have won 3 matches so far in 2017 and we're approaching the end of February. I think you're getting a bit carried away making out us lot in the top 5 are untouchable.

Lose to Pompey on Saturday and all of a sudden that dreaded 8th place might not look too far away.

Thing is when you start getting to end of season it's as difficult to play teams fighting for survival at the bottom of the table than them at the top just look at the results from last Tuesday no result is guaranteed

There will soon be around about 6 teams fighting for survival, while potentially the entire top half are looking at play offs or better. There are arguments like this every year and even those with nothing to play for will spring surprises because the pressure is off them.

You only need look at Mansfield remaining home games to see how tough a run in they have
Newport, Plymouth, Carlisle, Exeter, Luton, Portsmouth.

If you come through those still in the playoffs then you will have definitely earned your spot.
We have none of the top 3 or bottom 2 left and only 2 games against teams currently in the playoff spots so on paper reasonably good.

Thought I'd bump this thread back on to Page 1. No particular reason :bdick::bravo::ds:

You're on a very good run after a spell of indifferent set of results so what has changed that's brought the improvement?

Mowgli - up until yesterday it was mainly due to a kinder run of fixtures more than anything else. I also think resources are starting to play a part. We've been very lucky with injuries this season and have much greater squad depth than last year. Cook has also shown a bit more flexibility with his formations.

How may have both Doncaster and Plymouth gone now without winning?

The next ten days are so, so important for us.

We have two home fixtures we should win against Morecambe and Crewe. In that time Plymouth play Carlisle so at least one of them is going to drop points. We then play our game in hand at Crawley next Tuesday.

Win those three and we're in third place whatever happens.

As I've been saying for a while we won't finish in the automatic places. We're simply not good enough. There are too many better teams with easier run ins. 4 hidings over January and February may have shown more of our fans this reality.

I think we can make top 7. I wouldn't put money on us making it but I believe we are good enough. It will be touch and go and a lot will depend on our points return between now and the end of the Mansfield match which is the last game in a very tough run of fixtures for us.
