Even as a rabid Hants fan, I'm struggling to see why they've gone with Dawson. The best I've got is he's been playing in the sub-continent in Bangladesh so is used to the conditions, and he's more of an all rounder than Leach, which this current batch of selectors seem to like, though the paranoia that all eleven must be able to bat is getting out of hand.

Billings could/should be brought in to play the spin.

I'm actually starting to think that's what is going on. I can't think of any other reason for this selection.

His batting. That's not me being facetious either, I'm 90% sure that will have been the discussion.

Farcical. Just when you think they've turned the corner - they pick someone like Jennings on merit (i.e. he's not a fashionable player but he scored the most runs in CC last year and deserves his chance) and then they go and can't help themselves by picking someone because they 'know what he's about' or something.

Broad 50/50 but luckily...Batty is still in contention. Phew. Fully expect them to go with 3 spinners because of the pitch and completely ignore the fact that Joe Root poses about as much threat with the ball as Batty and Dawson do.

Cook, Jennings, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Woakes, Rashid, Ball, Anderson.

Pulled into the side at 2-0 down , no warm up and opening the batting away in india , I'd say that ton must be in the top 3 England debuts for sure.

Good start, going tits up. Need 400 still as our spinners won't get the same spin and pressure out of the pitch and India will still score runs.

Will end today 6 down, minimum.

EDIT - Bairstow out now, 2 disaster sweeps in this session and we have thrown our chance at a big score away again. As per.

Solid recovery, good innings from Stokes to settle things down.

If we get 375 and 400, we will be in the driving seat. Just worry about our spinners.

good turn and bounce there, did well to recover.

Superb innings from Jennings (judging by the highlights package). England openers. London buses.

Very happy for Jake Ball too. He's had an outstanding 18-24 months considering he was a bit of a boo boy at Notts 2 seasons ago (not for me I must smugly mention though)

Great to see young Jennings doing well - lets hope the tail can wag.

Fed up of umpires taking DRS into their own hands. Is the word 'conclusive' that really hard to understand? it doesn't matter if you think it looks out - you don't have to make the decision, you're merely using technology to inform the on-field umpire.

Haven't really been keeping up with the tour, what happened for this?

Haven't really been keeping up with the tour, what happened for this?

umpire gave a catch to first slip off Stokes not out. India referred it and it kind of looked out in the sense you watched and thought 'he might have edged that you know' they went to ultra-edge or whatever it's called (snicko) and there was a noise but it coincided with the toe of the bat hitting the ground so you couldn't tell if it was the ball or just the bat hitting the ground. Third umpire decided to overturn the decision despite there being nothing conclusive enough to over-turn. Stokes looked very confused.

Umpires still seem to be using their judgement a lot (saw it with that clown Joel Wilson in the summer) rather than going through the process like they do in Rugby.

yeah it's that un-English progressive thinking of 'how do we go from good to great' rather than implying Cook's doing/done a bad job, which he hasn't. You've just got a lot of superb and aggressive players in that mid-20s range and an old-school conservative captain doesn't feel compatible. Berry draws the comparison in that article I think with the Nasser to Vaughan analogy.

All depends on who the internal candidates are - Root seems to be the heir apparent but I've never really been sure what people have based that on other than him being a permanent fixture in the team for years to come.

He's the best player, that's what most people tend to base it on!

But also he's clearly very well respected in the dressing room, has that positive mindset that would be looked for and just seems in interviews and such to be a leader type personality. Comes across as someone who knows and thinks about the game as well. Don't know if he's captained for Yorkshire before at any of the age levels?

Stokes I guess would be the other obvious potential candidate but he might be a little hot headed, and being an all-rounder as well chucking the captaincy on top of that would be a bit much.

If you were going to do it in terms of timing now would be ideal, give him time to adjust and grow into it before the Ashes. The question might be how it would affect his batting but his problem over the last year or so has been converting good innings into really telling contributions, having that extra responsibility might actually help in that regard.

The other way I thought they might go would be to have him take over the one day side from Morgan, but this would be preferable. World of difference between the formats. Could do both I suppose but then you've got the issue of overburdening. Give that to Buttler instead.

Root was pretty much one of the go to guys in the Yorkshire dressing room a matter of months after his debut apparently.

Keep picking up wickets but whilst Kolhi is there India will score big.

I'm afraid we just don't have a panesar or swann anymore that's the only difference between the teams, if we had 1 of them we would win a couple of these games. Rashid has currently bowled 28 overs on the trot that is just rediculous.

Surely Kohli's a difference too, he looks like he's on another planet most of the time.

Yes but I'm certain if we had a class spinner they would cause him a lot more problems wouldn't they. He is an absolute class act though.

Absolutely, we're making it all a bit easy for him. He's so bloody good though.

Must be so draining in the field for us it's easy to see why we are making the odd mistakes in the field.

Rashid and Moeen 40+ overs each 2-130+ each, Root 7 overs 2-17

Am I right in thinking the only reason he bowled too was when he put himself in to bowl while cook was off the field?

Abject stuff from Cook again, there seems to be absolutely no plan to get Kohli out every time he comes to the crease. I get he's good and our spinners are always going to be outmatched by India's but at least try something a little different. Rashid bowling a 28 over spell was absurd.
