Oh how I love an Aussie collapse, but they’ve done this before and then hit us for some.

Great bowling by Archer, we have a player

Definitely not the start was hoping for. That was horrible from Roy chasing that wide one. Almost looks an action replay. Root in fairness got a beauty.

Absolutely shocking. With the exception of Root some of these dismissals are just awful. And now Denly gone chasing a wide one.

Aussies should declare now, probably got enough already with this shower of a batting lineup.

After Archer yesterday I decided to cancel everything today and follow England building up a match-winning lead. Never in my most pessimistic mind would I have seen 67 all out coming. Denly's top score of 12 is the lowest top score in the history of test match cricket. Too many bad shots. Bring back David Steele.

The bowlers must think why do they bother when the batsmen totally fall apart !

Aussies aren't much better but even without Smith they can get to 100..

Maybe we need to look at importing some overseas batsmen too ?!

Shame - was looking forward to a Bank Holiday off watching the cricket .

I know this is going to look a knee jerk reaction but we really need to take the captaincy off Root let him focus on his batting alone again. His head just doesn’t seem in the game even with things like that dropped catch off Labuschagne.

Over the past 18 months or so Root's average Test score has dropped from 52 to 48 and that's a real indication of his decline. I don't think he's good captain material, especially if it's affecting his batting.

When England bat in their 2nd innings probably requiring around 400 to win, will they get to 100. I suspect not. Is this the worst England Test team ever?

You have to say the batting is the worst, the bowling is high quality for the most part. In the 90s we had some collapses but amongst that at least one or two would make bowlers work. This lot have been bowled out less than 100 so many times in recent years.

359 to win, not a chance.

The Peter Principle is an observation that the tendency in most organizational hierarchies, such as that of a corporation, is for every employee to rise in the hierarchy through promotion until they reach a level of respective incompetence.

Seems to be some of that going on with the England team to me.

Root should be a very good 4 but he's been promoted to 3 (kinda an opener really) and isn't half as good at it. And he'd contribute a lot more as a very good rank n file team member too instead of an under pressure struggling captain.

I'd keep Roy in the team but not opening. Middle order destroyer role somewhere.

Stokes is like 4th bowler this test but maybe that's too high a position for him at this level? Obvs got Jimmy to come back, hopefully.

I dunno, it's not a bulletproof hypothesis but I do see some examples of it with some players. Drop some of them back down a level and they'll contribute a lot more to the team. Who would replace them at the higher positions though, fuck knows.

It would be nice to see a couple of stone-walling partnerships to keep Oz waiting, but there's no-one in this team remotely capable. I remember when we were getting black-washed by the Windies in the 70s and 80s and they brought David Steele in. Things didn't change much until their supply of great players dried up, but he was very difficult to get out.

Well batted by Root and Denly with an honourable mention for Stokes seeing out 50 balls at the end even if barely troubling the scorer. Realistically need this partnership to go big to have a chance especially with a new ball due before too long.

I think we will come up short as I don’t really trust the rest of the order to come but am pleased we showed some fight this time.

Unfortunately I foresee a collapse. We’re too inconsistent that I can’t see the mentality of yesterday carrying over to today. Up to Root, Stokes and Bairstow to get us to within 100 and then the tail is going to need to wag to get us there. Butler is in no sort of form though and isn’t a defensive player we need in this situation. Think it’ll be over by tea today

We really should win this from here now but with England you always feel a collapse is always just around the corner.
Will be amazing if we chase this down though after being bowled out for fuck all in the first innings.

One of these two at the very least need to be there through the innings. The new ball did us a favour as it got sent to all parts though Lyon looks dangerous.
