Broad has bowled magnificently this test with little reward (could have had 4 first innings winner a bit of luck). In fact he's bowled well all series, showing signs of getting back to full fitness.

Top class fas bowling for that wicket

bowl him a few outswingers (righty in swingers) and then bring one back, his technique could well trap him on the stumps.

Jimmy gets a wicket first ball - largely assisted by the bat of Chanderpaul.

70-2, now 80-4.

Great throw from Stokes considering how off balance he was

Ali returns with his long-hop garbage. We have far too many 'jack of all trades' players. Both Buttler and Ali are batsman first, not specialist keeper / spinner.

I suspect Rashid not being selected here will cost Moores his job. rightly too. New man in charge of English Cricket (who I believe is a Yorkshireman), was clear in his stance. West Indies are pretty awful at the moment, plus lost key players to the IPl. If this isn't an easy win (it hasn't been) then heads will roll

It's ashes year. something has to change before.

We need to pick a spinner and stick with them and support them . Be that rashid , Riley , dockrell or whoever. Ali is not a frontline spinner whatever the management says so if he's being picked as a batsman I'm not sure he's worth a place especially as root is just as effective as a part timer and far the superior batsman .

With regards Buttler, would you want him replaced as the keeper in the team? And if so, would you still want him selected on his batting merits alone?

Blackwood has certainly been the throne in the side - 85 in the first innings and 40 odd now.

For me, the most important part of wicket keeping is taking catches and stumpings.

Today Buttler missed a simple stumping. It wasn't even a hard one you'd admire, but a regulation stumping that I believe cost us chance of victory today.

Do I believe Buttler is the best wicket keeper in England? No. In one day matches I get gambling on him. But not in test matches where standing up to spinners is bread and butter.

No. I wouldn't select him as a keepe. however I might select him as a #6 batsman if I have the balance in the side

I don't think you can have a balanced side with a wicketkeeper who isn't a proper batsman these days . They have to be able to contribute with the bat . I'd be sticking with buttler , working on his keeping and certainly not playing him at 8 !!!

A wicketkeeper who can bat is great. Plus expected. I've not seen a wicket keeper in a long time why can't bat.
Selecting a batsman who can keep wicket though, is utterly different.

Buttler has never truly been a wicket keeper. Jesus. I remember him being third choice at Somerset. Not just beind Keisweiter, but trescothick too.

foster should have been England's keeper for the past 4 years

That's that. I'm hoping graves tears apart the selectors plus sacks Moores. 3 tests in Windies, where they are weakened by the IPL and made of glass anyway. We stumble to a draw.

Surely something has to happen before the summer. New Zealand and the convicts will destroy us. I'm terrified by Starc swinging the ball at 90mph vs trot and bell

Fair enough , but buttler was a youngster then and was way behind kieswetter . Foster's days with england are gone ( I agree with you about the last few years btw ) . I can't think of any outstanding wicketkeepers who could bat at 6/7 in test cricket currently playing in the county game . Let's be honest , the next cab off the rank would be bairstow who makes buttler look like jack Russell in the keeping stakes .

I'm not saying it's right or wrong. However if butler was a bowler, he'd be considered 'part time'
I'd rather a specialise wicket keeper anyway, regardless of other limitations. Look at the catch Jordan took. you only realise the value of a specialist Wicket keeper once he's ine action. I do t ever remember Buttler taking unexpected catch.

At best he's solid. At worst, he's what we saw today.

I can't argue with the assessment of Buttler's keeping, particularly with the missed stumping today. But there are much bigger issues in this team than the keeper.

I expect a significant shake-up in the next couple of weeks. I'm just not sure what that shake-up will look like. I really think it needs to involve Moore's being shown the door.

Oh don't get me wrong, I fully agree. I feel bad highlighting Buttler as I felt he batted magnificently today. however I felt it highlighted the defensiveness of England perfectly. Bat deep and don't lose.

We don't see, to select specialists at all. I'm not a tredwell fan, but at the toss the pitch was clearly going to be a dust bowl. Our squad had both Tredwell and rashid, yet we selected neither.

For too long we've cared more about not losing than winning. Look at today's. We were bowled out because our top order refused to attack the ball. Windies batted in a poorer pitch today with little issues. No adventure. No chances.

In f1 Senna always used to say 'be in the right tyres at the right time'. This is no different. Select your best players

There are far more pressing issues than the wicket-keeper right now like our batting, our bowling and our coaching staff.

A hard-fought draw with an under-strength West Indies, signs of progress after the world cup humiliation though. Maybe.

I don't necessarily agree with silvergull about buttler but his general point stands . We are picking bits and pieces cricketers when we need specialists, especially in the bowling department . Having stokes and Jordan in the same side doesn't work ,it's great having batting down the tail but we need 20 wickets to win matches.
