Shrewsbury are grim to watch. Parky is a master in the Cups and we have better players than them. I'm not sure anyone regards it as a shock really.

We didn't play well but grabbed a lucky goal. The chances they missed were criminal as well.

4th round, let's have a big away day.

Not sure how Mullin got away with going through a Shrewsbury defender and studding the Wrexham keeper in the arm
I swear Mullin makes one of those challenges every game he plays, always gets away with it somehow.

Anyway Wrexham score spawny deflected goal, opposition miss sitters, what’s new?

We must have paid off the referee right? probably the opposition too.

They missed some chances that should have at least been in target but there was only one likely winner in that second half. As for Mullin he was entitled to go for that ball, it was a foul but nothing more than that. He's a combative player, not sure why some people are so upset by that.

Stockport County.
Yeah fancied Wrexham. They're in a very good place right now. Unsure where they would strengthen to be honest. Maybe another striker, don't think Dalby is all that. I know George Evans to quite a small extent, good lad and far too good for League Two. Two Stockport (Stockport-ish in Cannon's case) lads in the middle of the park for Wrexham.

Just looking at Wrexham's back three. I presume Hayden is injured? What about Tunnicliffe and O'Connell? They were quite high profile signings at the time yet never seem to play?

Hayden, O'Connell, Tunnicliffe all injured. Hayden and Tunni can't stay fit, despite both being very good I'd be shocked if we keep them on next season. O'Connell came back for a few games but we rushed him back due to the others and he got injured again so we're struggling in the CB department. Rumours 1 or 2 CB's in Jan but we'd have to drop somebody out the squad to sign first

Rattled that Notts haven't made it past the 2nd preliminary round of the fa cup in 20 years and we're going to our second 4th round game in 2 years.

Hayden, Tunnicliffe and O'Connell are injured. O'Connell, Tozer and O'Connor are probably our strongest back 3. Cleworth is generally fine buy gets nervous in big matches, such as today.

Striker to go with Mullin is our 2nd most important signing in January behind Okonkwo, though we'd likely need to pay 7 figures for him. I honestly think we will pay what Arsenal want for him but it's whether he wants to stick with us or sign for a club in the Championship where he'd probably be fighting for the main spot.

I'd be happy with just signing Okonkwo and nobody else. Another clean sheet on a big away day for him. To be fair he didn't have a save to make, such was the woeful technique of those Shrewsbury players.

Evans was a class apart, definition of a Rolls Royce player.

I was surprised at Shrewsbury’s anti football. It was like watching Cambridge under John Beck. They would struggle in league 2.

I haven't seen a side in this league play that sort of direct long ball football against us. Their keeper launched every offside into our area. We've not had a physical aerial match like that since Maidenhead away last season.

There's a lot more football played in L2 than I envisaged, nearly every side we've played have been tidy on the ball.

Yourselves, Mansfield, Stockport and Crewe all would've got a result there I reckon. Maybe a few more but those are the best sides we've faced this season.

That is a good point, I’m struggling to think of a side we played that are non-league lump it up style.

I actually think the most direct side I’ve come across is Wrexham, particularly in the league game but I think a lot of that was down to how well we played especially in the first half, I’m not calling you a hoof side mind, it’s more like a Steve Evans let’s attack ASAP which I’m not against considering the quality up top.

Yeah we've concentrated on not being a non-league side for the vast majority of those 20 years :shifty:

Shrewsbury have been like this for years now, I think people saying they'd struggle at League 2 level are being naive about how tough a division League 1 is nowadays. On the flipside, nobody in this division in their current state will go up and do anything of note trying to play entertaining attacking football without embracing their uglier side. Shrewsbury are just playing to their strengths and getting the most of the budget they have at their disposal.

Was in that funny lingo, but I can confirm that ‘studs up’ is apparently the same in Welsh as English.

We are direct but can do both sides I think, in the Cup game against you we played some nice passing football. With the technical players we've got in midfield it would be a crime not to try and pass the ball.

Still got the long throw but Tozer was dropped and getting phased out a few months back but injuries at the back have meant he's back in the side.

I actually think the best L2 side we have come across is Wrexham but in that FA Cup game, but at the same time if it wasn’t on telly it wouldn’t have gone ahead due to the conditions, I reckon that helped Wrexham and unfortunately for us it wrecked the pitch.

Mansfield can definitely do the ugly side aswell, the Stockport game is a perfect example of that, L2 is all about being able to mix it up especially at this time of year. Notts County take note.

Being able to do the 'ugly side' is of course important especially when some clubs pitches are so ugly at this time of year.

If your side also attempts to entertain and try to play good passing football on the deck then a wrecked pitch can really be detrimental to this aim.

Not often one can write "Wales done this division proud"
Wrexham in next round and Newport also in 4th round draw.
Our only reps left in the English FA Cup.

Note sure drawing at home to 10 man Eastleigh can constitute doing the division proud to be honest. Quite the opposite.

Honestly if there was one club in the 92 I'd associate with the complete antithesis of fast, attacking and attractive football it'd be Shrewsbury. I've been watching football for nearly 25 years and they've always been the same whether good or shite.

But you do make a good point about L1. Very easy to underestimate it when flying high in L2. But the spending has gone mad at that level. Especially since COVID finished. Momentum may give a small budget outfit a great first season (see Exeter last season, Cheltenham the season before and us the season before) but when players contracts expire and you get picked off by teams offering double or treble the highest salary you offer then the second season at the higher level is always the most difficult. We never recovered from losing 5 or 6 first teamers that Summer and you can see the likes of Exeter struggling in their second season there now as well.

Attacking football in L1 is only practised by the Top 6 sides anyway. If you're on a budget, you tend to keep it tight vs top sides but you're also wary of losing to teams around you in the scrap too whereas you can take more risks in L2 as more promotion places, less relegation places and less wage disparity on offer. It's how Shrewsbury can score sod all up top yet still look clear of relegation fears for the time being!

Blackburn away for us, we just can't seem to land that big Prem side but it's another big away day where we will take thousands and hopefully put up a a good show.

Blackburn away, not the worst draw. Be a decent allocation, not that far away. Can see us getting dicked if they go full strength.
