I don't think we'll line up with a 4-2-3-1. I think he might play a diamond, given the lack of decent wide options to choose from. Welbeck was the only one actually scoring goals who can play on the wing. Sterling, AOC(injured again, quell surprise), Walcott. Whole bunch of meh options. Playing a diamond seems to suit this squad far better. Dier at the base of the diamond, Alli and Wilshere/Lallana/Milner infront occupying roving roles. Barkley at the tip, or Rooney if you wish. Then have Kane and Rooney or Kane and Vardy or Kane and Sturridge. Either of those options would work imo.

One thing we should have at this tournament is a bit of flexibility and ways to rotate the team and formation around. Fatigue and travel shouldn't be an issue unlike Brazil, nor should an injury to any one player unlike in tournaments of old where we lost a Beckham/Rooney and we were screwed. Their is no superstar in this team. Be very interesting to see what sort of team Roy names for the build up games.

Agree with most of that. Sterling has stagnated this year. I don't think City has managed/coached him particularly well. Hopefully Guardiola's team will improve upon things there. At Liverpool, he had a lot more freedom in his role which allowed him to approach games in that 'fearless' manner. He shouldn't be starting at this tournament.

Lallana would be one of my first names on the teamsheet at the moment. He's been excellent since Christmas and has refound the form that got him the move in the first place. He's extremely good on the half turn and his ability to create that extra half yard for himself could be valuable in a tight diamond. I'd have him ahead of Wilshere at present alongside Henderson. Henderson does get a bit of stick but providing he's fit, we need that worker in the middle and he's better positionally in the middle than Milner is.

Barkley's another one who shouldn't be anywhere near the team. I'd actually take him out the squad from a personal standpoint. I'm very much of the view that when it comes round to tournament time that if you're not in form, you shouldn't go. Barkley's suffered at the hands of the 'potential killer' Martinez. The emergence of Alli has meant there's less dependence on him. I'd rather put Townsend in the squad as he's finally found a regular starting berth and is probably our most in form winger, plus he has previous international experience (and form).

One day, an England manager will learn that form and fitness are the most imperative things going into a summer tournament.

I'd have Vardy and Kane up top without a second thought, but we all know it's going to be Rooney and Kane don't we.

I'd play 4-3-3, same as we did in most of the qualifiers and our best recent performance (Germany). Same team as that friendly, with Sterling in for Welbeck.

Hart
Clyne, Smalling, Cahill, Rose
Henderson, Dier , Alli
Lallana, Kane, Sterling

A game in which we were trailing until we switched to 4-4-2.

We played well throughout that game. And I didn't only mention one game.

Rooney should start without question! He plays for Man Utd and he's from England's magnificent golden generation. Just remember all those great goals he has scored at the big tournaments and he is almost on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo etc.

Who the fuck is this Vardy guy trying to take his place? Never heard of him and he only plays for Leicester City ffs, what league are they in? The Championship?

It's dark days for England when they look at picking players from such little clubs with no success.

If Rooney does not start then Hodgson should be ridiculed and ultimately sacked for not playing our star player!

Players should only ever be picked to play for England who already play for from Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. With maybe one or two exceptions from Man City and Spurs.

We should get Sven Goran Erikson back in charge, he knew that it was important to pick our big named celebrity players ahead of unfashionable ones.

Perfect example was playing Lampard and Gerrard in central midfield together instead of playing that ugly Paul Scholes, he wasn't really a hit with the ladies so he was never going to be a hit in the England team! No newspaper would ever find an interesting or scandalous story on that little ginge.

Rashford not in the the Toulon squad - looks like he might replace Welbeck - unless Southgate has completely lost the plot.

Squad gets announced on Monday. In my humble opinion, it should be:

Goalkeepers 3):
Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton

Defenders (7):
Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker, Nathaniel Clyne, John Stones, Danny Rose

Midfielders (8):
James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshire, Andros Townsend

Forwards (5):
Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge, Andy Carroll

Standby (7):
Ryan Bertrand, Danny Drinkwater, Theo Walcott, Ross Barkley, Michael Carrick, Marcus Rashford

He's not in the Toulon squad because United will be playing the FA Cup final. The players involved in Championship play-offs will also miss out.

Interested to see what the squad is tomorrow, I really hope he doesn't take Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere. Neither of them have barely kicked a ball this season and I'd much rather see Barkley and Townsend be picked.

Wilshere only managed 69 minutes today. He's miles away from being match fit. Even if he plays 90 minutes in each of the 3 England warm up matches, he'll still not be 100%. He isn't best used as an impact sub, so I don't see the point of having him as a bench option and he clearly isn't fit enough to start. Nor has he built up any sort of form. Should not be anywhere near the England squad.

I'd go for:

Hart, Forster, Heaton

Clyne, Walker, Bertrand, Rose, Smalling, Cahill, Stones

Dier, Henderson, Drinkwater, Alli, Barkley, Lallana, Sterling, Milner, Wilshere (test for fitness in the friendlies/training camp, if he's not ready swap out for Noble)

Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge

With a starting XI of:

Hart
Clyne Smalling Cahill Rose
Dier
Lallana Henderson
Alli
Kane Vardy

Doesn't matter who we take, we won't make it to the semi's.

It will be the same old story!

A half fit Wilshere is still the best CM we have, and I don't see how or why his selection would effect Barkley's chances.

Andy Carroll is a donkey.

Can I just say all this support for Townsend for a call up is bullshit. Antonio has been one of West Hams best players this season, he can and has played all down that right side wether at rightback, wingback right mid or as a winger and he does well in all those roles. He's fast as fuck, strong and he's performed well since his inclusion around Christmas not just in a handful of games. I have nothing against Townsed but this is like Carroll getting his name thrown in just because he bagged a hat trick against Arsenal.
Antonio has not only had the better season but he's also a far more versatile player.

This would be my team against Russia first match with 4231 formation

Hart
Walker - Stones - Smalling - Rose
Dier - Wilshere
Lallana - Rooney - Alli
Kane

Think this is the strongest XI in terms of technique, think this would work brilliantly with Rooney and Alli switching over a few times with Rooney drifting out wide a few times with Alli coming inside, think the formation gives em the freedom to move around wherever. If we struggling to get a result we can always bang on Vardy and Sturridge up top, strength in depth happy days.

I'm guessing Rashford, Walker and Drinkwater/Townsend will be the ones culled when the squad is reduced from 26 to 23.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Surprised to see Delph there. Not, however, surprised to see Rashford. Really think it should have been Defoe. He's scored as many this season as Rooney and would have added some old-head experience in the 'probably won't play but there just in case' role. Very young squad.

I would probably drop Delph, Wilshere and Rashford from there to leave 23.
