Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Another Romero zombie film. This one features four individuals hiding out in a huge shopping centre in the middle of a zombie epidemic.

Excellent film. Hilarious, darkly satirical and full of gore. Just about what you want from a 70s/80s zombie film.

9/10

The best and only zombie film worth seeing.

Are you trying to put a dampener on my zombie run?

I just don't think once you've seen that one you need to watch any more of them. I've never seen the appeal of them personally anyway.

Day of the Dead (1985)

Romero. This one focuses on a group of soldiers and a group of scientists sharing a massive underground bunker with each other and hundreds of zombies. Each group hates the other.

This one had less of the social commentary but turned the gore, action and humour up to eleven. It's a little bit like what Aliens was to Alien. Again, brilliant.

A decent enough film about good versus The Devil over the soul of a young girl,a good cast with Kim Basinger,Rufus Sewell and Jimmy Smits and some creepy moments made this worth watching. 7/10.

War Planet Apes is very good. I watched and enjoyed the first two, but I wouldn't say I was under the spell. This one is excellent, and I think I'll rewatch them soon. There was one guy who loudly said it was shit as he left the cinema, but I don't know enough about him to ascertain if he had a well considered criticism or just hates movies.

Dunkirk - best film I've seen in years. The cinematography is beautiful and it really is edge of the seat stuff. The sound of the incoming Stuka's is quite something. 10/10.

Unlikely to get to see Dunkirk any time soon, but spotted Saving Private Ryan on Sky the other day. I'd almost forgotten just how brutal that opening sequence is. I've seen it plenty of times, but I'm always surprised by the number of cameos, often by people who weren't actually cameos at the time. Paul Giamatti, Ted Danson, Vin Diesel... It was the first time I'd noticed Bryan Cranston and the guy who was in Firefly.

Still a quality film, mind.

It wasn't great at all, was it. What particularly annoyed me for some reason was that 'bad guy' who wanted to weaponize the raptors was just thrown away. Michael Crighton always used to have the evil industrialist meeting a sticky end as a main plot point, but this departure didn't really leave a mark. But the PA who the Claire tasked to look after her kids, the woman who's only crime was being ditched by a couple of little shits, gets probably the most spectacular and gruesome death in the entire quadrilogy. What had she done to deserve that? Give that to a real bastard.

It was like having Ramsey Bolton killed by a random arrow in the Battle of the Bastards and then using the 'eaten by dogs' death on some random kitchen maid who had overdone one of her eggs one morning.

I was away for a few days and was at the mercy of a Netflix account rather than my illegally acquired behemoth of a library so I temporarily abandoned my zombie marathon and watched From Beyond (1986 horror/sci-fi about a science experiment gone mad) and Killer Clowns from Outer Space (1998 film that is just as it sounds).

Both 7/10.

Back into the zombie films tomorrow night.

Best two '...of the Dead' films there imo, Stevencc. Have you seen Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore to give it its Italian name)? Something a little different to throw into your run if you get bored of the zombie-by-numbers ones.

I absolutely loved the second one. Talking apes riding horses firing machine guns and Gary Oldman. Wasn't too keen on the first one though. Will hopefully make some time to go see the new one at the cinema.

The Great Wall (2017)
A strange but decent film starring Matt Domon,PedroPascal and Willem Dafoe. The Chinese army is under attack from creatures called Tao Tei a cross between dinosaurs and the and the creatures from Alien, some decent battles and was much better than i thought it would be. 7/10.

A Separation- 6/10. It's ok. Doesn't quite warrant the hype. If it was made by a British or American director it wouldn't be regarded they highly. A hipsters film.

Dunkirk is one of the most intense 100 minutes I've ever watched on screen. You get dropped into the situation, and it just rolls on at a constant pace for the entire duration. It's some accomplishment. Similar in tone, but very different in style to the likes of Saving Private Ryan and Band Of Brother.

That's the type of film to watch on the big screen. May just do that next week.

Deathdream/Dead of Night (1974)

A young American soldier killed in the Vietnam War returns home as a zombie.

An allegory for the horrors of war and the difficulties faced by soldiers returning to "normal life" on the one hand and a cool zombie film on the other. The makeup was great (Savini's first film).

8/10

Same as that mate,an early showing at 11AM then across the road to the pub. :)
Ooh don't talk about drink at the moment, feeling a bit groggy as I had my first few whiskies in a week last night and went to my bed too soon! Don't even have any fry-up food in the house for my breakfast either. :(

Sharknado 3 (2015)
More silliness but even more extreme this time if that's possible  Sharks attack Washington D.C. starting with The White House and then end up in space chasing a space shuttle, plenty of gor and cameos from Jackie Collins,Penn And Tyler and Jerry springer to name but a few. It helps to have a sense of humour to watch these films and i will watch part 4 tomorrow for another laugh, even my missus loves them.
