Not watched a film in years, never been a big movie fan but find myself bored shitless 90% of the time. Anyone recommend a good one?
You seen Saving Private Ryan? May be an oldish film but it's one of the best WWII films for me.

Dragon Blade (2016)
Based (loosely) on a true story. The Roman army of Crassus has been destroyed by The Parthians but a Legion escapes by fleeing east along The Silk Road into China. When the dictator Tiberius takes his army into China the legion make an alliance with the chinese to help them repel the invaders. First 30 minutes were dull but once the battles start it turned out to be a good film even though it has Jackie Chan and John Cusack in it. 8/10.

Loved the movie and the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. It's has the perfect blend of action and comedy. It's a 8.5/10 movie for me.

X-Men: Apocalypse

I'd been hoping to see Apocalypse feature in a film for a while but I found this not all that tbh. Much prefer the 90s cartoon version of Apocalypse. Hate to say it but this film was shades of X-Men 3 (not that bad but you get the idea). Just lacked heart really and I didn't find myself very invested in the characters. First Class is still the pick of the newer X-Men trilogy with this being the weakest for me.

I do like the X-men films (X2 is very good, First Class is superb) but even still as a massive comic nerd I just cannot get myself arsed to see Apocalypse. Just looks so... fucking... meh. Like it's an Xmen film happening because they haven't done one for a few years, and no other reason. I'll see it when it's out on Blu Ray/TV but I couldn't give a shit about waiting for it.

Aye when I saw the trailer I thought it looked pretty rubbish tbh. Will probably still watch it though at some time as I've seen most of the others anyway.

Was a lot better than I expected tbh. Sophie Turner wasn't bad as Jean Grey and Cyclops wasn't a little bitch either.
Quiksilver was ace too.

You need to give it another 1.5 points for this line....

Interesting because the reviews have been quite bad. Do you think it's because people who aren't familiar with the lore won't understand it easily?

It was nothing special, as you say those who never played any of the games probably wouldn't have thought much of it

Bonkers film based on a bonkers play by Bill Shakey. All over the place but never dull and I got into the madness of it.

No it's because I'm a massive Warcraft fanboy in all honesty. I don't think there was much chance of me not enjoying it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)
I'm loving this ninja turtle reboot. Really enjoyed the first one and this sequel is even better. Re-casting of Shredder was needed and even though he doesn't feature as much as in the first it's a welcome change in actor and character. Be-Bop and Rocksteady were great, as was Krang. Casey Jones was played well and a welcome addition to the team. Megan Fox will probably win a second Razzie for her portrayal of April O'Neil, but who cares? she's great to look at. Long may this current incarnation of the heroes in a half shell continue. Five slices of pizza out of five.

I'm curious whether any other film has received this level of a mixed response. I've now read multiple reviews where the comparisons to Mario Bros and particularly Battlefield: Earth have been meted out quite viciously. There's more than just boredom being elicited - it's actually detested - and it's not looking like it's just the ignorant critics with an agenda against video games. But then you have positive reviews from non-players from a certain area of the geek spectrum (your Marvel / Star Wars types), and many fans are absolutely drooling over it.

I can understand why, though. For many, po-faced high fantasy is just about the most nauseating thing imaginable. For others, it's something they love to a point of adopting it into their entire being. I can't really think of a better example for a love/hate genre.

I like the Warcraft games and universe for their unapologetic colourfulness and silliness, but also their commitment to story and character. But then that's within the video game context, where story and character is often not a thing (or so bad it might as well not be). Sometimes it's hard to judge not just how well a story will translate to another medium, but whether a good story in a medium of bad ones will actually hold up in a medium where they're a higher calibre. For eg. The Witcher is often compared to ASOIAF / Game of Thrones, and I'd judge Witcher 3 as having the best storytelling in any game I've ever played, but is it really as good as GRRM? I just don't know, and I've invested a huge deal of time into both. The Arthas story is cited by pretty much everyone as the creme de la creme of Warcraft, and maybe one of the best in all gaming, but would even that be able to get a positive response from the huge number of people who just can't be getting on with what Warcraft is? I think probably not. No matter how well it's executed, Warcraft's decision to go unconditionally all-the-way in a genre that evokes such strong resentment in a great deal of people meant it would never be universally accepted.

btw no I haven't seen it yet and I'm pretty sure I'll think it's pants.

Expected Goals
Adam Sandler's The Do-Over.

I've developed a peculiar curiosity for Adam Sandler's latest films since The Worst Idea Of All Time (Two New Zealanders watch Grown Ups 2 once a week for a year).

I can't imagine anyone is worried about spoiling this, but just in case.

David Spade is an Average Joe whose life has barely changed since he left school. At a school reunion he bumps into uber-cool Adam Sandler who's line of work is mysterious, but definitely cool and he's probably a real lady's man. In order to Do-Over their lives, Spade and Sandler fake their own deaths and take up the identities of two men being hunted down by a number of baddies.

It was very briefly promising to be better than his usual stuff, but soon came the usual levels of misogyny and gay gags that Sandler fans(?) must adore. Towards the end of the film we discover that Sandler's character is dying of cancer, but between the butt jokes and signature push-up bras I was struggling to get emotional about it.

All the Way (2016) - Loved the movie and Bryan Cranston is great in it as President Lyndon B. Johnson. The movie starts after JFK's assassination and ends when he won the election the following year. Michael B. Jordan was also good as MLK. 8/10

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) - I enjoyed the movie, but I liked the First Class and Days of Future Past better. What I liked about the movie were the casting choices for the new mutants, Sophie Turner was great as well as Cyclops and Nightcrawler. I also loved Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse, he played the role really well. What the movie didn't do well for me was the final fight scene, it could have been shorter and better. Other than that I really enjoyed the movie. 7.5/10

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) - A good comedy movie by the Lonely Island. It makes fun of Justin Bieber's documentary. There are a lot of great cameos in the movie and it the songs they come up with are funny. If you like Andy Samberg and his style of comedy then you'll love it. 7/10
