Easy fishing today!
Bury at home on Saturday is already giving me butterflies. If we’re honest autos are all but gone even if we win our last two we need snookers elsewhere. No expecting it but never say never.
As mentioned above we played Bury on the final day of the 2014/15 season and secured promotion with a win. Given we were already relegated most of the people I know didn’t attend myself included. It’s vital we don’t let it happen again and drag them back into it.
I’ve studied the league table and I think I’m right in saying Bury will be promoted if they win and one of MK or Mansfield FAIL to win. Bare with me but, If Bury were to win that would put them on (80). In the scenario Bury win and Mansfield win but MK lose we get this;
2. Bury...80
3. Mansfield...79
———————-
4. MK Dons...76
There would be no need to get the calculators out it’s pretty straight forward Bury are uncatchable for MK. If MK were however to draw then we get this;
2. Bury...80
3. Mansfield...79
———————-
4. MK Dons...77
Normally looking at this with a game to play nothing would be decided but with the final day fixtures given 3rd and 4th face off would hand Bury promotion given both Mansfield and MK can’t get maximum points. (This being the reason for Lincolns promotion last week.)
If we were to flip it and say Bury and MK win but Mansfield draw we get this;
2. Bury...80
3. MK Dons...79
———————-
4. Mansfield...77
Same logic as above. Bury would be promoted because while either side can overtake both cannot. In a situation where Mansfield lose then they are on (76) to Burys (80) and therefore Bury are up.
If your still reading thank you!
In the event all three win Saturday (Bury, Mansfield & MK) we get this...
2. Bury...80
3. Mansfield...79
————————
MK Dons...79
Which in itself almost wraps promotion up for a Bury even if they lose to Port Vale on the final day given that a win for either side in the other game keeps one of them below. If however they all win this week and Bury lose to vale and Mk v Mansfield ends in a draw we get this.
2. Mansfield...80
3. Bury...80
————————
4. Mk Dons...80
Mansfield would finish highest due to having the best goal difference then Bury and finally MK miss out having the worst goal difference of all three. In summary given Burys goal difference compared to MK they will only need three points from Tranmere (A) or Port Vale (H) baring a goal swing in favour of MK to get in on goal difference.
I’m going for a lie down!
Top form? They’ve won 1 in the last 5 games.The atmosphere is going to be electric at Prenton Park.. as good as you’ll ever find for a L2 match.
Big crowd, two good teams, one who are on top form and the other has off the field issues but carry on limping to the finish line. Promotion at stake.... add in the backstory of the 2015 promotion game and the somewhat local rivalry between the clubs and it’s very much a perfect storm.

Rivalry? Not really... think we both hate Bolton, otherwise that's about all there is in common. We'd obviously rather you didn't win, go up and go on the pitch again, but we haven't got room another tinpot Manc rivalry - our 6 fingered friends from Boundary Park will always have that special place in our hearts.The atmosphere is going to be electric at Prenton Park.. as good as you’ll ever find for a L2 match.

It is not that long since we were averaging 9,000, so it is more a case of the returning disaffected than glory hunters with us.
In short, the club was nearly destroyed by the Americans, almost folded and the local population didn't really care, excluding the 1-2,000 diehards. We did ok for crowds back in the 50's and 60's, but everything dropped off slowly until we had a bit of success from '87 onwards. Hence nothing against the Lincoln bandwagon, it happens to us all. Our "diehard" support nowadays is about 5,000 though, as proved by our non-league stint.What happened during the late '70s and '80s- average was down around 2,000?
Can't think that far back- was it ground restriction or temporary relocation?
The club was properly down in the dumps. Crumbling stadium, no money, and on the verge of disappearing for good. That era wasn't good for many clubs, but it hit us particularly hard, and it was arguably the lowest point in the club's history. We were a charity case, with a few big sides holding fundraising friendlies for us (Man U, Wolves, Liverpool I think).What happened during the late '70s and '80s- average was down around 2,000?

The local economy played a big part as well. The closure of Cammell Lairds and mass unemployment in the town.The club was properly down in the dumps. Most of the gates at our away games were similar in scale to be honest, rarely pulling in many more than 2 or 3k. Some 1983/84 attendances as a sample... Bury away - 1,512. Hartlepool away - 1,226. A local derby at Wrexham - 1,858. A league cup away tie at Chelsea in 1982 only attracted 8k!
It was far from a glorious era.
Yes, hence the use of the word ‘somewhat’... Tranmere is only 40 miles away I think that’s pretty local.Rivalry? To an extent I agree, but we did go to Oldham which is a difficult away game and were absolutely robbed of a point.We won’t go up, we’re choking.
Due to your +7 GD... I’d say all Mansfield have to do is beat MK Dons and you’re up.To an extent I agree, but we did go to Oldham which is a difficult away game and were absolutely robbed of a point.

My instinct it to say we will bottle it at MK as our away form is diabolical, but MK will be feeling the same I am sure. Think it's in the nature of any fan at this level to assume the worst!One game at a time, If we win Saturday I imagine (hoping) at least Bury or MK will drop points considering who they are playing.

All done and dusted for us now, although without going all 'if my Auntie had balls', I think we should have sewn both promotion and the title up earlier than we have. Dropped some silly points early in the second half of the season.
Expectation this season has probably meant it hasn't, for me at least, felt as good as 2016/17.
Imagine that expectation. Then finishing bottom.
To be honest, their only stand-out players last season were on loan from over the river. Once the chairman had finished burning the bridge over the river (stand-out players then appear elsewhere in Nottinghamshire), the chances of a repeat were greatly diminished. I didn't expect them to finish bottom, but certainly were nowhere near likely to finish top.Imagine laying on said team for the title....
Thinking I should have cashed out early.

Happens to every team going for promotion every season... suddenly the pressure is on for different reasons... a lowly side that might have rolled over in a mid-season game, are now scrapping for their lives... or a team with nothing to play for like Northampton have the freedom of having not much pressure, and that can breed confidence with the shackles off. Oldham aren’t a bad side either and have play-off hopes of their own.In essence we’ve got 2 goes.
If we win Saturday and Colchester lose we are basically up on GD so could afford a 3/4 goal loss there. If it’s reversed we can still win at MK and go up on GD.
The performances are Northampton and Oldham were shambolic for a team with aspirations of promotion - had we not choked at both we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place
Definitely not us thenIt’s going to be an exciting showdown that’s for sure. Out of the 3 contenders I think it will come down to which team has the biggest balls and can be most ruthless.
