How are we the best fans? I think the whole [insert clubs name] fans are the best argument is pointless and stupid. A collective set of fans of one club, any club aren't the best. It's the fans of every single club who travel to the other end of the country on a miserable Tuesday night through good and bad times to support the club, to go as many games as possible regardless of performances, they are the best fans and every club has them.

The whole club size is a tiresome argument, all the clubs listed on the past two pages are very similar sized clubs. What exactly do people construe as club size? Club size fluctuates, currently Wigan are probably slightly bigger than the likes of Bristol City, Preston etc, whether people like it or not. What we've achieved over the past 15 years is the reason why, top flight for 8 years, FA Cup winners, League Cup runners up, played in Europe, bigger revenue, budgets and up until this season bigger crowds for a decade surely covering every single point that can be argued against club size.

As I said though club size fluctuates, 15 years ago, Bristol City etc were much bigger than Wigan. Who knows what will happen in football and in 10 years time things will probably be a lot different once again. wiganmudhuts and JJH are making themselves out to look like right idiots, wiganmudhuts, why do you have to argue with everyone? JJH you say Wigan winning the FA Cup and Bristol City spending a few seasons in the top flight 40 years ago and not winning a major trophy makes Bristol City bigger currently is bizarre rationale.

Fans of clubs who've had no success, arguing with fans who've won 1 trophy 100 years ago, arguing with fans who've won 1 trophy in recent times. Perhaps if a club in this league had won 10+ trophies some of which recently then you'd have a genuine claim as the stand out biggest team.

I do tend to find a lot of club size tends to come down to people seeing the population of a place and for absolutely no footballing reasons declare a club big because a lot of people live there, as a strange logic as well.

At the end of the day, no club in this league is 'big' otherwise none of us would be there and I'd argue there's no real big club in The Championship either. However, there's a lot of fans with a superiority complex.

The hate comments are a bit weird too, a Preston fan hating Wigan is one thing local rivalry, it's to be expected, but a fan of a club 200 miles away hating Wigan, for what reason? I've seen a lot of people who cheered Wigan on as a second club a few years ago, win the FA Cup and suddenly these same people 'hate' although hand on heart, if people were being entirely honest it's down to jealously, as we've done someone 95% of clubs fans would only dream of.
i would make you a mod after that post if i could well done sir...dont worry we will be posting on the championship forum next season hahaah

Because the size of a club isn't determined on just trophies won, there's far more to take into account.

I didn't gloat about us being in the top flight 40 years back, I simply raised the point that we've been in the top flight for more years than Wigan Athletic.

I don't need to get into this debate - nor does anyone else in this thread who supports one of the reputable clubs that have been mentioned, I can't take it seriously when you're comparing clubs like us, Preston, Coventry, Sheffield United etc to Wigan Athletic.

How can you use the argument that size depends on your current success levels and then say Preston and Bristol C (both above you in the league pyramid) are slightly smaller? Makes no sense.

Inconsistency is the sign of a failed argument

There's a hell of a difference between 10 years and 6 months. We were head of Nottingham Forest, Leeds United etc for 11 years, so by your logic for those years Wigan were bigger, no we weren't and aren't. Bournemouth are a league above the two teams I've just mentioned, so your logic suggests Bournemouth are a bigger side. Yet you say my statement made no sense?

Who knows is the simple answer, we averaged around 20k for our previous 3 visits to Wembley for a competitive fixtures, whilst I'd imagine it wouldn't be as high as that, I also don't think it would be as low as 10k.

Dont even think they sold out for cup final

We didn't we sold 23k out of 24k allocation. However, for a town of populaton 85k, travelling 400+ round journey over £100 per head having the month before made the same trip, it's not something to be scorned at. Had the Cup final been played at say Old Trafford, we'd probably have had 10,000 more but hangers on who weren't really arsed in the slightest about the club. I know what I preferred.

You're right it isn't just based on that, it's a number of contributing factors. However, it is a large contributing factor and it's what is remembered in the history books.

You mentioned a short stint 40 years ago as reason why you see Bristol City are a supposed big club. Why back track?

You don't need to get into this debate? You were happy enough when it was replying to wiganmudhuts remarks. But now someone has actually challenged you for your remarks you're playing the I don't want to discuss football matters on a football forum. You're probably on the wrong website if that's your stance.

Comparing Bristol City, Preston, Coventry and Sheffield United to Wigan you can't take seriously, I must have missed the fact that we're all not too dissimilar in league standings, mid table Championship to mid table League One isn't a huge gulf. Though over the past 15 years apart from this one, Wigan have outperformed all of the teams you've mentioned.

I like how you've self elevated Bristol City into the same bracket as Coventry for instance. Bristol City 10 years in the top flight, 5 in the 1910s, 5 in the 1970s, no trophies to show. Coventry 34 seasons in the top flight, as recently as 2001 and 1 FA Cup win. Vastly superior to that of Bristol City. Sheffield United and Preston may not have won trophies for many years have actually won a few trophies and spent far longer time in the top flight.

You're 'refutable' club comment is purely down to the fact that Bristol is a densely populated City which for some reason people then perceive a club as being bigger than it is, for absolutely no reasons to do with football.

It's not my logic really. It was your argument. I merely extrapolated it.

If you're asking me about size of clubs it more goes on size of fanbase but what do I know... I've been embroiled in too many dick waving arguments to get involved in another one.

We will be out of the play offs tomorrow and we will finish between 15th and 17th. JoeJoeJoeJoe showing his intelligence again when he called us the best team in the league! If I had a pound for every time he's said something wrong I would be a very wealthy man indeed.

Extrapolated, like taking 1 atom out of the universe. As you would call it, paraphasing in all it's glory.

Because simply there's no debate to be had. I didn't laugh at wiganmudhut's comments because of the club size of Bristol City, I was laughing at what he made Wigan Athletic out to be.

You may well have been more successful in the last fifteen years, but now it's back to the norm. Leeds United and Wednesday haven't done owt in fifteen years, they're still far bigger clubs historically than Wigan and are still regarded in the bracket of big clubs regardless of what you say.

Like I said, again, you're just mentioning competition success. If you want to seriously debate the size of clubs, there's far more to determine it than trophy success.

Bristol's a big city where it's footballing teams haven't met it's potential for a good 40 odd years. Despite this, we still continue to sell out every week this season in the lower end of the Championship; albeit with a reduced capacity.

Stop bringing us into this, we were laughing at mudhut's comments about Wigan which surely even you can't defend. If you want to debate this, we'll speak about the size of Wigan Athletic as everyone else has been doing in this thread, it's pointless you putting them into context with the clubs I mentioned.

Wigan took 8k the last time they were in a 3rd tier Play-Off final.

Which is about as many posts there have been from Wigan fans since they spent a load in the transfer window.

Couple of good wins and you'll be talking about automatic promotion again. Extreme pessimism is just as boring as extreme optimism.

Bristol City and Preston are both far bigger clubs than Wigan, have around 100 years longer in the FL, more longer term success and bigger fanbase. A money funded ten-twelve year spell of success does t make a club bigger overall. Portsmouth for example are in League Two and enjoyed a similar top flight, cup win spell as Wigan, heavily funded, yet despite falling a league further and not having mega bucks to spend they are getting nearly double what Wigan do at home hence are a far bigger club.

The reason people liked Wigan as a PL team was the plucky little club pitting itself at the top level a bit like Bournemouth now but often you'd see empty seats when watching Prem games on TV from the DW and some tiny away followings which back that up.

Potentially no Bradshaw/O'Connor tonight against our bogey side Scunthorpe.

I wonder if the gate will touch over 3,500? Midweek, freezing, bogey side, no away following, dire dismal football, low confidence, self-destruct button firmly pressed.

Everyone has given up.

You are joint third in the league and you have given up?

And I thought we had some pessimistic bastards in our ranks!

By the way we have lost probably the best player in the league (Dack), our captain (Loft) and our vice captain and best centre half in the league (Egan). Not to mention Cody MacDonald.

Ain't given up though :lac:

Bristol city not cat in hells chance...Preston debatable and port vale well just completely irrelevant, and who cares who have been in football league longer another pointless argument which means nothing we have done more than Bristol city in shorter space of time your just an hater stick to your tinpot nothing club and let the big boys debate :10: and comparing us to Bournemouth just somes your football knowledge up..

Wigan hadn't even been up to the second tier until 12/13 years ago... To say your bigger than Bristol City suggests your success in a short time in football history maybe clouds your football knowledge. A large club would achieve a degree of success over the majority of their history not just a decade. History defines most clubs and Wigan just don't have one prior to 1978 in the league.

This article is a good read: http://www.mirror.co.uk/opinion/football-opinion/wigan-fans-dont-deserve-decent-3361503
