In my opinion it's time the EFL looked at the National League playoff format and switched to that. It's a much fairer system and gives a genuine advantage to finishing higher in the table. You get more excitement with one-off games and the higher placed teams always play at home, until the Wembley final.

It would prevent this situation where we now have a pointless, hell-scape game on Thursday where Wednesday basically have no chance of progressing and have to play in front of an angry fan base. This is their reward after finishing on 96 points. Madness.

And I'm not just saying this because we would have been involved down in 8th
If you finish 8th you don`t deserve a chance of promotion

Simply got out of jail yesterday, but Friday is another day.
Barnsley came with a plan and executed it well. Bradley was targeted in the first 5 mins which should of resulted in two bookings. We bypassed midfield and went direct this simply played into Barnsleys hands.

Glad Trafford and Bradley put in performances which shows why they will both command 8 figure transfers in the future [despite Ipswich fans telling me otherwise]
Santos immense as ever Toal exceptional find....The rest poor on the day

Thought we only started playing once Lee came on

To be fair if you finish third you get the weakest side (7th) and second leg home advantage, that’s up to the side in 3rd to take that advantage.

Sounds like you'd turn it down on principle. Top man.
Yes I would(if it were up to me), if you finish 1/3 rd of the way down a league, there is no way you should be promoted

I remember exactly the same objections being made when the playoffs were first introduced - "if you finish 6th, no way should you be promoted".

The good thing is that you still have two auto spots to aim for. If you don't make it, well then you abide by the playoff rules set out at the start of the season.

I'd also say that the National League format is actually better for the 3rd/4th placed teams anyway. You get a home semi against a tired team that may well have also played extra time in their quarter final. I'm not sure that the current format gives any real advantage to the higher placed teams. How many times have we seen a defensive first leg, where the home team sneak a late goal, and then can sit on it and hit on the break in the away leg? Personally I can't stand two leg affairs anyway. It makes sense in Europe but less sense domestically, in my opinion.

I haven't really looked into it but I doubt the teams in 6th and 7th have much of a success rate in the National League playoffs (actually, Grimsby won from 6th place last year so it has happened once). You need to win two away games against better teams before you even get to Wembley. However, you still have that sliver of hope that would extend the season for more clubs. I love the thought of teams battling first for 1st or 2nd, or battling for 3rd or 4th to go straight to a home semi, or battling for 5th or 6th for a home quarter, or battling for 7th or 8th just for a ticket to the party. And then one-off matches to either progress or end the season. What's not to like?

Maximum playoff excitement tonight. Dead rubber unless Wednesday can score early and make it interesting.

Agree, would say they need at least 2 goals before half time...that will get Peterborough wobbling

Well well! This is a rather good watch so far isn't it! Cracking for the neutral.

Need at least another before half time to really get into the Boro players heads.

Could do with p’boro losing 3-0/4-1 and then the final is there for the taking for us or Barnsley. Don’t fancy Wednesday in the final after a comeback win if they do it

Fair play to Sheff Wed for turning this into a contest. We know Peterboro concede goals, but I don't think the most optimistic Sheff Wed fan would have predicted this.

You watch Sheff Wed score to take it to ET, and Peterboro go and scrape through ...

So awesome.

Plenty of Wednesday fans have already left. I will never understand such fans. How much regret must they feel.

Wow. Crazy how much the ref allowed over the added time. Not seen a ref do that all season even with time wasting. P’boro will be fuming
