It's nothing to do with them being 'milti-tracked'. I'm talking about the production, the songwriting and the overall package as albums. Listen to what The Beach Boys Brian Wilson's comments on Rubber Soul, and how he said it was the first album that fit together like an actual album, rather than simply a collection of songs. And how it inspired Pet Sounds the following year. Then with Sg. Pepper, just have a read of the write up on it in The Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time (link below), where it sits at number one. In short, you don't have to like The Beatles, and you're perfectly entitled to say they're shit in your opinion. But to say they weren't pioneers is quite simply complete bollocks.

Well my opinion is that they were pretty poor songwriters when that was a time when there was some great songwriting around, and weren't particularly talented musicians. The monotonous choruses of their songs are torture to the ears and imo they were all pretentious bores. The Take That of their day; popular but musically poor.

And there is nothing wrong with a bit of Elvis either! :D

I just don't see the appeal of them when there were far more interesting artists and bands around back then. Anyway I've made my point on it. :)

Give me Queen and The Rolling Stones over The Beatles any day.

Can still appreciate that they have and are still giving a lot to music. Whether that's through false reputation is debatable but they are heralded as pioneers and as such many people will take influence from them. Almost a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way and I wasn't around when they were 'pioneering' to really pass comment on that debate.

I shouldn't apologise to the 'Phil Collins' brigade, IMHO he is worse than any of those just mentioned.

If you want overrated, look no further than Bob Dylan or Led Zep

Opposing the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre!!!!
People who leave cupboard doors open in the kitchen.

My son does that and it vexes me too. He also swats the kronk roll on the floor after he's had a shit and leaves every electrical appliance on after he's used it. He'll be disappointed to learn I'm using his birthday money to pay the electricity bill.

I too think the Beatles were over rated, not shit, but over rated. I preferred the Stones, especially their early material and The Kinks

Bob Dylan is an awful singer, but a great musician and songwriter.
That Rolling Stone review of Sgt Peppers. I can get on board with most of it, but how is he measuring what is great when he calls the Beatles the greatest rock and roll band ever? I just think the Stones had a more earthier sound to them. Not all their songs were great but if I were to compare Love me do with Gimme shelter, or She loves you with Paint it black, or even I wanna hold your hand with Sympathy for the devil, for me there is no comparison, the Stones songs are far better. Just my opinion though

WHy would you compare the early beatles pop songs (as good as they are in their own right.) with songs written years later by a band in their creative peak?

I like the Stones but the early Beatles pop songs piss all over the Stones early stuff which is banal derivitive nothingness. As much as I like their better albums like let it bleed and in particularly exile on main street neither are as good as Abbey road or Revolver or Sgt Peppers etc etc.

I could be wrong on this but I reckon if you were to ask a bunch of people their favourite Stones tracks you'd get the same 5-10 songs over and over again with the Beatles you could get any amount such is the quality of their back catalogue.

In short The Beatles> the Stones.

And Phil Collins is middle of the road shit, I'm not sure why someone would associate those who likes The Beatles with him. Or perhaps it was just a failed attempt to be funny

Birthdays as you get older. It was my 35th birthday yesterday and with my wife being ill and October being a tight month for me financially I "celebrated " with a cheap bottle of Rioja a Chinese takeaway and a row in the shoutbox.

You must be getting confused. The Beatles early pop songs are banal. I'm right, you're wrong now leave the thread.
