Well my opinion is that they were pretty poor songwriters when that was a time when there was some great songwriting around, and weren't particularly talented musicians. The monotonous choruses of their songs are torture to the ears and imo they were all pretentious bores. The Take That of their day; popular but musically poor. It's nothing to do with them being 'milti-tracked'. I'm talking about the production, the songwriting and the overall package as albums. Listen to what The Beach Boys Brian Wilson's comments on Rubber Soul, and how he said it was the first album that fit together like an actual album, rather than simply a collection of songs. And how it inspired Pet Sounds the following year. Then with Sg. Pepper, just have a read of the write up on it in The Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time (link below), where it sits at number one. In short, you don't have to like The Beatles, and you're perfectly entitled to say they're shit in your opinion. But to say they weren't pioneers is quite simply complete bollocks.

And there is nothing wrong with a bit of Elvis either!
