Student Unions (or at least the way they are heading)

Sure they have done a lot of good I know but they are becoming a ridiculous caricature.

Two weeks ago the NUS passed legislation to advice university LGBTQ+ societies to not have white, cis, gay men on their board as we have more 'privilege' than other groups in the society. Because of course everything is fine and this group aren't at an increased risk of having mental health issues amongst other things worth fighting for. I completely agree more needs to be done to advance the other 'groups' (hate that wording but cant think of better) rights but that should not involve deciding a very large part of LGBTQ+ students should now effectively be made obsolete. Its an inclusive society that has done fantastic things by being INCLUSIVE and all fighting for each other.

And now we have this... http://thetab.com/uk/edinburgh/2016...lxpost&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=pages

A student in trouble by breaching the universities safe space policy. Because she shook her head. Way to go with enforcing the 'precious little liberal students' image.

It was the logical inference. By all means explain your position though.

My position is one of the fact that the BBC is just as bad as other news outlets for sensationalising news and posting bullshit headlines, such as the one above. And this is a 'national service' which you have to pay for ffs.

The fact that the BBC is 'impartial' is a load of bollocks too.

Well actually it's not remotely among their top headlines and the article is titled "Singer Tulisa banned from driving for 15 months" which is neither sensationalist or bullshit. Quite frankly, it's a little bit difficult to discern why anyone would possibly object to it.

It annoys me that they even pretend to be impartial. With the whole Panama tax scandal yesterday they were leading (on their website) with how Putins Cellist used the scheme...when it transpires David Cameron's dad used the scheme. I dont think either people are hugely relevant but I fail to see how Putind Cellist is more relevant than the PMs father!

Which is probably why they have an article dedicated to the fact that the PMs father used the scheme too...

Yesterday the main headline for half the day on the internet was about Putins Cellist. Bothered much? I dont think the article on DCs father has ever been headline news on the website

I fail to see how either should have been the headline news. But certainly not Putins cellist over the PMs father as per my original point

Tbf they do have about eleven million documents to wade through.

The PMs father is getting more coverage now, presumably because it was uncovered more recently.

The BBC have to tread pretty carefully with the Tories tbf, as they still probably believe there's a slim chance they might not get decimated by them if they play nicely (lol). Hence why they're so biased towards them.

Like any other organisation the BBC has a culture and an ethos. This will have some influence on the way it presents news. But, like Channel 4, it's not presenting the news in the way a particular person or party wants it to, nor is its remit to grab as many viewers as possible even if that means sensationalism and appealing to mouth breathers. It's a very good source of news and current affairs.

There's so much good programming on the BBC too. I think it's good value if you compare it to what you'd pay for various niche channels.

Whatever else we've fucked up as a country we at least have the BBC and the NHS. The day they're dismantled I might just be off.

I still haven't seen him made into a headline on the website yet though, I think the Independent were running with it a while ago but could be wrong.

Another example that comes to mind would be in the US election how they try and make out results that go Trumps way to not have done. I think it was Chris Christie who won his home state a bit ago on a night that Trump still dominated in the other 4/5 states, the BBC chose to go with how Trump was stalling etc. and focus on his one defeat as opposed to other wins...similar has happened a few times. I dont like Trump but would rather an 'impartial' news site were impartial.

That being said I still prefer the BBC over other news outlets and would rather they didn't collapse entirely.

To be fair, Blade, that's probably because you're on BBC.com rather than BBC.co.uk, not defending them by any stretch, but you are on the 'world' news.

If the Tories do stop TV licenses and tear the BBC to shreds, it would be the best thing they'd done. Not against them continuing in the same vein as any other channel (adverts), however, the way they are currently run needs to die.

Did think of that...but then the sports news is always UK related and the other news generally is as well. Maybe everyone outside the UK does care about Putins Cellist and its just gone over my head

Through the use of what is essentially a TV Tax.

Their stupid fucking accents. Their bottom of the barrel, lowest common denominator "humour". Their bastardisation of English. Their total lack of culture and decorum. That "I believe that we will win" chant, that can fuck right off. NYFC 'fans' trying to start their own firm after watching Green Street on Putlocker. Their total lack of fashion nouse, if you wore black socks pulled up to your shins with cargo shorts and New Balance running trainers in Europe people would quite rightly think you have learning difficulties. Their incomprehension of the outside world. Sean Penn.

Do I count? I'm half Irish, so that should cancel out my half-Americanness.
