I think Morata could be the way to go then if you are wanting a name unless Benzema or even Bale could be let go by Real if they get Mbappe. Other than that with Griezmann off this summer then I'm unsure who you could get that would suffice. Jose tends to like big strong strikers as well so I dunno who else is out there that would fit that mandate.

Hopefully Mourinho has persuaded them to fill gaps in the squad rather than chase the latest galactico.

That would be the more sensible thing to do, but since Fergie retired your transfer business seems to have been throwing darts at a dartboard and seeing what comes up. Perhaps under Jose there will be a more targeted approach for bringing the squad on rather than as you say pretend you are Real Madrid and buy big names for the hell of it.

That post makes no sense. In what way do any of those players have to do with our current set up.
Ha. I was suggesting options for Jose's strong striker. I'd forgotten sir Rickie had even played for Liverpool tbh. No Liverpool mocking in this one fella.:hypo:

Theres some reports claiming that the reason Jose wants Morata is because he was a young Madrid player during Joses time at Real and he wants to bring him through to dispel the criticism that he doesn't nurture youth.
Makes sense, prove you nurture youth by signing a player you largely dismissed to play instead of more youthful players in your current squad. You show em fella.

Well, Liverpool just put out a statement saying they've ended interest in VvD.

I guess they did meet with him privately then.

"Premier League to take no further action against Liverpool over alleged illegal approach"

Tapping up players is alright then. :bl:

Well done to Southampton for standing up against that horrible football club. But don't expect the powers that be to punish them accordingly.

Van Dijk would've been a very good signing for them (and by all accounts he was up for joining), if only they played by the rules.

Wow. I didn't expect anything to actually come from the report, just thought it was our board trying to save face and then they'd look a bit petty afterwards. Fair enough, hope for Van Dijk to stay yet then.

Goal stats are pretty important for a striker that costs 78mill dont ya think?
I didnt see him play much at Juve when I watched them, not because he wasnt playing but because he was pretty much overshadowed by a younger, much better striker in Dybala that actually looks like a player worthy of that kind of fee.
As I say people, like yourself cite his potential, though he's 24 and is being priced as someone who has already fulfilled that potential.
Your assertion that he's the best bet out out of the available options seems ludicrous. Aubameyang is openly being priced at around 61mill, a proven striker and thats just a start.
Aubameyang isn't available for United, he's going to PSG. Lukaku as well doesn't want to go there. Dybala is probably the most exciting prospect on the planet but he won't move.

For all your posts on the subject you really haven't produced much of an alternative beyond "Morata's stats is shit and he isn't worth £80M". I'd say going into the season without a single good striker (neither Martial or Rashford can be considered good in United terms) isn't worth it either. It really is a case of Morata, Lacazette or Belotti and just about everyone will rate them in that order.

I was right. Well in G.B for not taking the bet.

Also, I never really wanted him. Many posts back that up. Good summer so far basically.

Well this will only add sticks on the pyre for the FSG outers. First they tap him up, then when things are agreed they try and undercut his wages even when he evidently wanted to come. What a farce, and a potentially promising and needed positive window from the owners has got off to a dreadful start. They are even baulking over a few mill in the Salah deal. Say what you like about those other evil owners of City, Utd and Chelsea, at least they get the fucking job done.

It's shite like this that stops Liverpool pushing on. Maybe they'll go in for Koulibaly now to try and appease everyone.

Van Dijk would be a great signing for Liverpool. It'll take a hell of a sell job from Klopp and co to convince him to choose Liverpool over City, though.

Nothing to worry about, hunk.

Take a trip down memory lane to October 2010 and you tell me which part of the job you feel they've failed?

It's a fuckup and we lost out on a good defender we were about to pay gazillions for. It's not a disaster, just very embarrassing.

Didn't want him anyway. ;)

In all seriousness he's a great defender but by the look of it we would have had to pay out £60m. He's not worth that, £50m was a stretch.

I wonder how he will react now if they don't end up selling him given what heb said about the potential move?

Its alright stabilising the club off the pitch, bringing along the infrastructure and commercial deals; but they are inept when it comes to transfer dealings. A few years ago Sanchez was going to be the big signing when Suarez left; they spent ages fluffing about, and when he decided to go to Arsenal who'd we end up with? Balotelli....

The four signings we have been very heavily linked with so far this window were Van Dijk, Salah, Keita and Sessegnon. The latter is off to Spurs; RB Leipzig are not selling Keita; we're procrastinating over a few mill on Salah and now seem more interested in a Portuguese league player (that worked out well with Markovic didn't it); and Klopp's supposedly top target in VVD has been bollocksed. Its alright flexing your muscles off the pitch, but its the players and manager that pushes you on, not how much revenue you can get out of sponsors and tv deals.

What started off as a good week, and one where it looked like we really meant business, is now turning into yet more missed opportunities, and a potential window of what could've been; whilst the other top six will get most of their targets and we'll be scrambling to keep up once again.

Klopp will be understandably pissed off with this, and other managers have walked for less. It reeks of smalltime.

Southampton have not dropped complaint to Premier League. PL not involved in discussions today and not decided yet whether to investigate

I reckon that if van Dijk ends up staying (he could still go to City or Chelsea), then it will hurt Southampton more than it will gain them.

He's one player, a good one. But they're passing up on money that should be equivalent of about 40-50% of their non-transfer turnover. But more, their whole business model is based on players viewing them as a stepping stone. And I mean that for no disrespect, we too sell players like Alonso, Suarez and Sterling when they want to leave. We do, because if we don't we'll never be able to attract a player who's ambition is to play at a level above ours. Southampton will face this problem if they start to hold on to players, and it's the bitter truth. If they force any player good enough to leave to stay, that will hurt them a lot in their pursuit of talent. Southampton's main attraction is that they are a great stepping stone for younger talented players, like Dortmund, to some extent like us. This will hurt that significantly and the Southampton board knows that. I can't see him staying for that reason alone, as young talented players will instead go to any given club where they feel confident they'll be let go of if they play well enough.

Again, I mean this as no disrespect but Gabbiadini isn't playing up front for Southampton to stay there for the rest of his career. Truth is, Coutinho isn't playing for us to stay there for the rest of his career either. When they can they want to go, and stopping them costs more than it gains. It's the bitter truth, so VVD will end up at Chelsea or City in my opinion and when Barca come calling next summer, provided Coutinho take that last step, we will let him go as well. Because we have no bloody choice and neither do Southampton.

Jesus christ.

Give a fuck about transfers, we we hours from being liquidated and seven years later we're competing with City, finishing above both United and Arsenal. They're gonna have to shove a lot of Balotelli's down our throats before it becomes even reasonable to consider their transfer failings to come near what they have done for this club. I'm not saying they're faultless, but this kind of fan logic annoys me so very much. We've moved up twenty levels from where we were when they took over and you have a go at them for this? Let it go, shit happens, tomorrow the club will still exist.

Absolutely this. Remember Deli Ali? We fucked around over a few measly million (it might not have even been that) and he ended up going to Spurs. There are numerous examples of this since FSG bought us. We can't even blame Ian Ayre any more.

An odd post. On this logic we shouldn't criticise the club over anything bar going bankrupt.

They been playing well for you this season have they? We forced Suarez to stay for a year as well, but that was literally because he thought Barca would come the summer after instead. Right he was, and it goes it show: it wasn't really our choice.

Almost every club in the world is a stepping stone in a food chain. Forcing players to stay happens very rarely for a reason. I don't know, you can go right ahead I guess. You'll have done well should you keep him for another season, it's not impossible, but that's up to VVD and not to you in all fairness. It's just the way it goes.
