Yeah, Alderweireld was a better centre-back for us than Van Dijk, so there is still a bit of work to do. However, he is still just 25 and has got time to grow into one of the best defenders in Europe.

It's worth noting that before January hit last season only Tottenham and Chelsea had conceded less goals than us. After 17 games we had conceded just 16 goals and then taking Van Dijk and Fonte out we ended up with the worst goals against record in the league's top eight.

So, he could make a huge difference to that Liverpool back four, which has been pretty awful (to be kind) for a number of years now.

Also, £50m is absolutely massive money to a little club like Southampton. However, the fact that the reported price has received more uproar than delight by our own club's fan base shows how big a player you're getting. I reckon this deal and a striker who isn't Mario Balotelli or Rickie Lambert will turn you into title contenders.

Charlie Austin? :animatedf:

John Stones isn't worth £50m.

I'll take your word for it then, that along with him actually wanting to come here makes me more comfortable with the transfer over all. I just can't get that 1-6 out of my head when it comes to VvD I guess.

Not sure a striker is what we need mind but as a subscriber to the thought that a team is only ever as good as its striker I'm inclined to agree.

According to Di Marzio we are looking to buy Napoli fullback Faouzi Ghoulam. Never watched him play but read good things.

Better Chelsea than United for me, although I'd say United need him more as they no longer have an equivelant of Costa.

Arsenal are probably bidding knowing Mbappe wants a move to Real Madrid or nothing, I imagine Wenger and the board would void their collective bowels were Mbappe and Monaco to accept their bid.

It'll be something to try and placate the fans with later on when everyone else is making good signings and Arsenal are floundering at the end of the window.

"We tried to spend big money on Mbappe".

Looks like Saints are wanting to keep hold of him, either that or drive up the price for a City or Chelsea as selling another star player to Liverpool won't go down well.

City are already apparently pulling out of the race because they don't think Van Dijk is worth what Liverpool are willing to pay.

That's coming from the club that paid nearly £100m for Stones and Mangala.

I am curious as to what actually constitutes an illegal approach. Can it simply be making it known that you're interested in a player prior to an official approach to the club? Or does actual direct communication need to have taken place with the player, ala Chelsea and Ashley Cole. If the former surely the majority of transfers can be deemed as illegal.

It appears to be a bit of a grey area to me, perhaps Southampton are simply using it as an excuse to up the price or keep hold of the player.

It's probably the latter and I'm not especially worried.

FSG have many flaws in their ownership model but one thing they don't do is take unnecessary risks. If they approached van Dijk illegally it would go against their whole pattern. They're incredibly careful (too much so more often than not) and for them to all of a sudden decide to take a legal risk in relation to a player would be very strange. I just can't see Henry condoning that by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not so sure, look how the academy ban on youth players came about. Maybe they've learnt their lesson from that and it is much ado about nothing, but there is previous.

Saints are irritated by what they see as an attempt to unsettle Van Dijk and are ready to reject an official offer.

That wording suggests to me that it's not direct communication, rather the story of our interest hitting the news and turning the player's head. For example, it's also been made clear in the news that Klopp is personally very interested in signing him.

Would that constitute an illegal approach? I'm doubtful. It happens all the time. It sounds like Southampton simply want to keep him, and they are of course perfectly entitled to. How Van Dijk will react to that is another matter though.

I think this is a great point, and well done for standing up against the "nah, obviously done nowt wrong/not that type of club" narrative the usual suspects have immediately rushed to push. Liverpool are already well known for their flagrant disregard of the law and we appreciate you acknowledging that publicly. This is a great example of why you are a very good and loyal mate, Salty mate.

Do we still do 1FF bets? I bet you a tenner no legal action will be taken against Liverpool and I know you won't bet against it. So stop chatting shit, it's getting tedious and you know I'm your biggest fan usually.

Gambling is a mugs game Beelo, especially when the only winners are the site owners. I think you should take it down a notch mate, I don't appreciate being spoken to like that and a lesser man would report you for that personal attack. I thought you were above that sort of thing.

Put it this way: you're usually a very level headed poster who's non Liverpool related opinions are usually accurate and spot on. As you know very well I backed you to the hilt to challenge Dessie as your predictions are better than most. I asked you about Newcastle's defensive performances because I trust your opinion. Yet when it comes to Liverpool you instinctively take the least favorable stance. Like, a ten year old can tell you the key differences between Liverpool's and United's possibilities in the transfer market yet the other day you were arguing as if you can't see a single one.

Basically stop trolling and give your real opinion on Liverpool sometimes it would be much appreciated. :hypo:

Truly yours
your biggest fan
this is Beelo

Did you take GB's post seriously Bilo? He was clearly, albeit with a small element of seriousness, taking the piss.

Let's just say you both seem awfully confident there's nothing to this complaint despite Liverpool currently having a two year transfer ban imposed on them for tapping up innocent children and offering them illegal inducements ie. bribing them/their families. That's all I'm saying on the matter.

Nah GB, 6/10. If the club have been in direct contact with him and it's proven, then the club deserve a punishment. If it's simply a case of the media publishing stories of our interest in him then I don't see the issue. As said, it happens all the time. Chelsea and City are also interested according to the media.
