Matt Bevans turned out for our first PS friendly last night. Released by Oxford Utd.
21 yr old RB, seems to have suffered a series of knee injuries in his short career, but played very well.

One of our ex players Liam Nolan has been linked with Macclesfield.

Naturally he's a CB but Davis constantly played him as a midfielder and I must say he was bloody awful. Some people may think my criticism is harsh but not once did he ever have a good game for us. He just seemed utterly deprived of confidence, he couldn't take responsibility, never successfully passed a ball forward and never showed the desire to take the game by the scruff of the neck like James Jones has done for us. His last appearance for us vs Walsall was the straw that broke the camel's back and ended his Crewe career I feel, 1-1 in a game we needed to win, 20 yards out with a clear sight of goal with no one marking him and he passes the ball sideways to the Walsall LB. 99.9% of midfielders would've had a crack at that!

However due to his height I reckon he'd be an alright signing for Macc two levels below as long as you play him at the back which we never did, playing him in midfield would see him sink like a stone to the likes of Congleton Town, he just can't play in that position.

Rumours of a new signing for us being unveiled tomorrow. No names being thrown around though.

Opinions on Rene Howe anyone?
Could be excellent at this level if he's managed correctly. One of the best strikers I've seen play the lone forward role in the season we should have reached League One.

Attitude seems to have gone tits up since leaving Plainmoor though (how familiar!)

Two trialists playing for us tonight - Callum Howe and Kieran Weledji (defender released by Middlesbrough).

Opinions on Rene Howe anyone?
He seems to have started ok at most places, then turned into a bit of a cock.

Can't keep the weight off him either. If he doesn't play for a week or so, he just seems to balloon up and take 3 or 4 games to get going again. Mind you, we had him on loan about 7 years ago now. In fact, I think we sent him back due to his fitness (or lack of). When Sutton came in, he took them to Aston Villa's place (he's good friends with Martin O'Neill who was their manager at the time) and let their fitness guys do tests on the players and Howe apparently came last in most, if not all, tests and he was described as being in worse condition than you'd find in a Sunday League footballer!

Nope, released him.

Did ok for us, but didn't have the required discipline in the position he was asked to play i.e. 'sitting' midfielder.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind signing him as a backup central midfielder.

Nah not for me. He looked woeful against us last season. Plays far too slowly for my liking.

Haha, who are you expecting us to sign as 3rd choice central midfielder ?!?!
I'm assuming Whitaker has left?

Its looking like DW has left, but maybe he's just weighing things up. It usually works in our favour with him when it comes down to the crunch.

As for 3rd midfielder i'd want someone in a similar mould to DW. Mendy for me didnt have much about him and games always seemed to pass him by. Surely there's some better triallists out there than him?!

Edit: By no means do i think we could pick up another DW with the wages we can pay but someone who keeps the ball moving with purpose, and support the front men, is what I mean.

Well yeah Mendy and DW are different, and we normally play DW out wide left in a midfield four whereas Mendy is very much a central midfielder. I doubt the triallists are much better, Mendy might not have done the business at Lincoln in his last spell but he was very good for us and got a move to Luton. You have to remember most of our best players were rejected by teams who didn't finish as high as us last season - Turnbull, Halls and Rowe are all now good players at this level, but we were repeatedly told how shite they all were by County fans for example. I take other fans opinions on board as they are sometimes right, but often I think JA makes them better players.

Totally get your point, but, for me, I've seen enough of likes of Diagne & Mendy in past years to give me the opinion they're not of the quality to move us forward. If this is what an increased budget is getting us this year then its scary to think what we must have been paying last season!

Always happy for JA to make me eat my words!!

Nah, I do agree with you to an extent, although they both last properly played for us in L2, which is better quality and they weren't responsible for our relegation. Being told the details of Diagne's signing opened my eyes though, we may have an increased budget but it is not much over half of Lincoln's still.

Doesn't surprise me.

I wouldn't at all blame JA to jump at the first opportunity of a better position, it really can not be enjoyable working under such constraints.

Going to be interesting to see how you guys do because it's a big ask for JA to build another squad like he did last season.

Realistically, top half would be a decent achievement.

Matt Young (previously mentioned) and Dave Symington have both been training with Barrow with view to a contract. Neither have played much non-league, both youngsters released by Carlisle. Both like they will initially be back-up but have good reports from Carlisle fans.
Still a possibility that we'll be bringing back Nick Wilmer-Anderton from Preston - easily one of the best full-backs outside the football league last season until he broke his leg.

Howe played for us tonight against Newcastle and didn't look too out of shape tbh, I was impressed with him against centre backs of a much higher calibre so I would be quite happy if he signed.

I thought he was very average when we had him

Think he was only 18 last season, so he must have been even younger then! He'll probably be getting league football somewhere this season.

Not surprised there are more than one club sniffing around Callum. He would be a solid signing for the vast majority in this league IMO. Future FL player for me.

3 new trialists at Barrow today;- George Bowerman (ex acc stanley), Lucas Dawson (ex Nuneaton) and an un-named (as yet) American Central Defender with an Irish accent?
Looks like Parslow won't be signing as he's apparently on trial at Cheltenham now...
