Poor Tabby. Would have taken him back last year, but he wouldn't fit in the squad anymore.
I think he could still do a job in this division, he was a regular for us last season but he's been completely frozen out this year.

We should confirm Sawyers from Walsall and Egan from Gillingham in the next couple of weeks on frees (Egan will go to tribunal). Couple of good signings, very happy with both. Will probably see O'Connell go out on loan, possibly to Gillingham if we can come to an agreement on the fee for Egan.

Sawyers has agreed to leave Walsall whilst their season is still in progress?

Not uncommon at all?

For a high profile example, Bayern announced the signing of Hummels from Dortmund today and they haven't finished their season yet (and actually play each other in a cup final soon)

Just seen that, would be very happy if Sawyers joined.
Yeah, for a pair of free transfers that would add significant depth to the squad. Think we'll need 3-4 other additions (DM, Winger - maybe 2, Striker) but a good start.

Add me to the annoyed list. Wish we'd stop wasting time pandering to agents desperately trying to flog all their relegated Bolton players to us. I get the feeling agents think we're a soft touch with a rookie chairman/manager, and are targeting us as a way of getting their north west players back in the Championship.

Can't believe we've not tried for Egan given our shortage of centre backs. Fair play Brentford, if true that's two very good signings.

Is it me or have a Gillingham been toss for months and always concede a fair few? Why the clamour to sign one of their centre halfs?

Young, quite a bit of experience behind him now, and not neccessarily his fault if they start conceding loads.

For me - he's a young player with some clear potential who we'll get for a very low fee. Given he'd be unlikely to get into the starting XI past Dean or Bjelland anyway it sounds like a great deal for a squad player. I'm sure Rotherham would have been delighted to have him.

Generally a leaky defence isn't down to just one player :pond:

As GWL reported this almost-signing yesterday, Sawyers would be an almost direct replacement for John Swift, so that's one position taken care of.

Don't know much about Egan but the belief is that he could push Dean for his starting spot and us having two centre backs for both the left and right positions is solid depth. Barbet was excellent the second half of the season and Bjelland is a full international and former Eredivisie club captain. Dean and Egan pushing for the right hand side could be a great battle.

A winger or two - would love to have Canos back again next season, but could go elsewhere - and a solid defensive midfielder and I'd say (injuries and sales permitted) that our transfer window could be wrapped up quite quickly. Last season/summer we had virtually zero stability, so now things have calmed down and our European players are adapting well to this league, we could end up having a decent season next year.

Agree with this, I'd add that we'd need a replacement for Djuricin as well, but hopefully we can wrap a few top signings up quickly. Getting these guys on frees should give us a bit more money to spend on the others.

Would love Canos back on loan, or even permanently. He clearly loved his time here so hopefully he'd be keen to return too.

A permanent replacement for him or another loanee? With Hogan, Vibe and Hofmann still with the club, it could be a costly burden to sign a permanent striker as that would me 4 contracted players vying for just one position. I suppose it depends on fitness/injuries as well as how limiting our DoFs believe the restricted new loan system will be.

A Chris Long-style loanee wouldn't go a miss. Not necessarily him, but a young and enthusiastic striker from a Premiership side but who wouldn't necessarily demand a starting spot. Looking forward to next season already, particularly if we can carry on our form from the ending of this season!

Flint won our player of the season vote and he played in a defence that conceded over 70 goals. He's a fantastic signing for Brentford, especially at such a cheap price.

Having only 3 is a bit of a risk in a season where emergency loans will be gone, wouldn't surprise me to see a loan deal come in. Perhaps a permanent one if we loan Hofmann out (I think he'll need more minutes than we're offering now).

Perhaps one who can also play a wing position (bit like Vibe) would be what we'll end up going for. We played with 2 up front a fair few times late on in games under Smith, so I think we'll definitely need 4.

Local paper has it, and a mate who works with the club.

Sawyers has been playing like he wants to keep himself fit in the last couple of weeks, backing out of challenges and so on. So it wouldn't surprise me even remotely if he has been wanting to avoid injury to ensure that he's fit and ready to sign his contract/medical at Brentford. I haven't had chance, but I wanted to ask if the opinion had changed on Smith? I read Griffin Park Grapevine a few times not long after he joined and he was already on the ropes. The run that has followed has been impressive, but it's absolutely what you expect under Smith's management.

For us.. when we won 1 game..you would see the confidence surge back through the side andd frequently we would go 6/7 unbeaten. However, the issue under Smith is that when you do lose 1 or 2 games in a row, it will turn into a no wins in 10 run. I Remember when we went 16 without a win and were bottom of the league a couple of years into Smith's reign - 1 flukey 1-0 win against Colchester and we surged up the table with 3 defeats in 24 and pushed up towards the play-offs - all with the same personnel. Smith is very good getting a centre forward who hasn't necessarily been on fire and getting 20 goals out of him (a little like giving Vibe and Hogan form/confidence), whilst ensuring the team are defensively sound - unfortunately, he is very stubborn and if this season's winning formula doesn't work early next season, he will stick with it and the team will probably suffer.

Very streaky manager with teams who can be very bipolar, so him looking like being sacked early in his reign, then coming up as manager of the month shortly after, really is no surprise - expect this throughout his tenure with you.

Wouldn't have a prayer of breaking up the Broadfoot and Wood partnership.

The jury is still out, which is surprising when we've had a couple of amazing runs with him in charge - and believe me, the first XI we've been able to put out this season is bad, easily could get relegated, so that makes the runs even more impressive. However, I'm just not at all convinced by his tactics, or substitutions a lot of the time, and you are right it seems to be entirely reliant on a bit of luck and morale within the squad. The run we went on to end the season had more than a large slice of luck involved in quite a few of the games.

Personally, I'd give him another season, I don't think he'll take us down at any point, and we'll see if he can bring some more consistency to the place. Don't know who else I'd rather have at the moment who would be a realistic target or as cheap as him, so it's probably best to keep some stability for now.

I don't see how that's relevant there aren't fans of premier league clubs wanking over him.

Lee Camp won our player of the year and we conceded the exact same, that's not relevant either.

I think I support you, and the statements you make, more often than most on here, but you really do do your best to drown out the sensible comments you make with some absolute rubbish sometimes...
