Apparently some genuine truth in the Mawson link. Lansdown won't hesitate to invest in a young player, but I'm not sure where he'd fit in here. Magnusson didn't sign for £2.5m to sit on the bench and Flint's one of our best players.

I suppose you can never have enough good options, but Mawson and Flint are both good enough to be starting in any side in this division. Magnusson remains to be seen.
Your last statement is a bit of an exaggeration! I'm pretty sure there are quite a few sides neither Flint nor Mawson would start for. For one, Mawson wouldn't get past Dean or Bjelland into our team, and I'm not sure Flint would either. Mawson would struggle to get into the starting XI of half of this division. Flint is good but incredibly immobile and personally I'm quite happy to see him on the opposing players team sheet.

Aden Flint kind of reminds me of Danny Batth. Solid Championship defender who will put his head in where most players wouldn't even kick it. The thing that stops players like this from reaching a higher level is that they have the turning circumference of an oil tanker.

I'd possibly take Flint but with Tom Lees and a fully fit Sam Hutchinson I'd argue we are stronger defensively, Hutchinson is genuine PL quality but for being broken and on occasion rash in the tackle. At Chelsea he was seen as a natural successor to JT and but for injuries who knows.

I like the Bristol lot on here, some cracking posters but sometimes they don't half go OTT re their club, players, owner and stadium.

Looking at their squad I'd argue only Kodjia and Flint are players I'd take at S6, the rest are very much bog standard Championship level players.

Flint's a cult hero here but he's also a better defender than people give him credit for. Dealt brilliantly with Andre Gray at our place last season for example. Player he most reminds me of in terms of style is Robert Huth. Obvs not as good (yet ;) ) but there's not a glass ceiling for that type of player if they're good enough.

Agree he wouldn't get into every side in the division though

You've got a better player than Mawson in Egan anyway!

I'd take Mawson for that price to be fair, would be excellent young competition for Lees, Hutchinson and Loovens.

Brilliant goal scoring record aside, Aden Flint is no better than Paul Huntington and we got him on a free transfer from Yeovil.

Bristol City shipped over 70 goals last season and Flint was a big part of that, I honestly don't get what the fuss is about.

Wolves have a defender on trial who was released by Barcelona.

His name? Godswill Ekpolo. Great name that...

Playing 3 at the back was a big part of that, our defensive record was perfectly respectable after Jan

Forster-Caskey has done a U-turn and wants to come now, Whitehead deciding today.

Out of our trialists it's Ryan Taylo has gone to Wigan, Benedict Saller is now with Brondy and Chris Konopka is with Portsmouth. That leaves Sassi D'almeida of PSG B and Guillaume Francois of Charleoi still with us and will probably sign.

Still no bastard strikers or major quality.

Still didn't look a great record at a glance though, although I understand it's not just down to one defender. I just don't see Flint as a top six player at this level and the rumours surprise me.

The oracle says Bristol City made an 11th hour offer to Bogdan but he turned it down as he wants to stay in the north west. Looks like we're stuck with him then. He also says we're trying hard for Brannagan on loan despite us being rumoured to have been rejected by Liverpool for a loan or buy a couple of weeks back, apparently Caldwell had a long chat/schmooze/arselicking session with Klopp after the game on Sunday. Also Sheff Wed want Max Power.

Pretty much spot on regarding Mawson. He'd probably be a regular starter for about half a dozen clubs at this level. Actually makes me wonder why Bristol City are interested given their premier league ambitions.

EDIT: Then again watching those Flint vids maybe not so much....

Purely to level things up, how many center halves do this in one season?
Although most (if not all) of those goals were scored against L1 defenders, he is probably better suited as a forward than a centre-half.

Just to add some context, all the videos shown were from when Cotterill was in charge and we were playing with 3 centre backs.

41 conceded in 23 games under Cotterill (3 centre backs)

24 conceded in 16 games under Johnson (2 centre backs)

Shows our defensive record improved when we swapped to 4 at the back which also included Flint being more comfortable.

Anyway does this all have to be discussed in the transfer rumours thread?

Reda Johnson scored 1 in 3 but defensively was a car crash waiting to happen at times.

That's obviously why Newcastle and Sunderland are sniffing then as he can't defend?
Keep underestimating our players bud, keep underestimating them. :fish:

Maybe not Mawson then, but Flint would definitely get into most in this division.

As has already been mentioned, he was absolutely exposed in a back three under Cotterill, but was rock solid again in a back four after LJ came in, and popped up with 6/7 goals.

You're probably in a better position than me to comment re: Mawson so I'll take your word for that.

As for our side, I tend to agree with Walkley. It's not anything special individually. A bit of magic up top with Tomlin and Kodjia, Flint at the back who's very good for us, and then apart from that it's either half decent young players who could well develop into decent players, or unknown quantity's at this level.

As for Mawson, it wouldn't surprise me if Lansdown was willing to put his hand deep into his pocket again for a young player who could well develop and has potential resale value. We'll see.

Yes, we're shit! Keep on telling yourselves that please. :hypo:
We've just had a Barnsley fan on our club forum 'guaranteeing' that we will be looking up at them ALL season. Put us down with Burton and Rotherham then as we don't deserve to be on the same pitch as huge clubs like erm Birmingham. :conf:
We might be lucky enough to fluke our way to double figures on points.
