John Terry confirmed at Villa by the slightly unbalanced Tony Xia on Twitter. My prediction is that he will be out of the starting line up by Christmas and will barely feature.
I just cannot see the point in signing Terry for Villa. Yes, he was a superb defender in his day but, I imagine as he's been binned, those days have gone. Villa get huge crowds anyway so I can't see any benefit there so isn't it a waste of £3M (if the reported £60K a week is true)? I just don't get it.

I guess the thinking is to build a squad to go up this year.

Terry is still a class defender, stepping down a level. If he signs a one year deal and helps to get Villa promoted then what is £3mil?

We got around FFP by signing Jordan Rhodes in January as a loan, but not paying the money until the summer so it goes onto next years books. Think there's loads of ways round it now, the chairman can just chuck his name on the shirt and sponsor the club for as much as he wants.

I'm near certtain that Tony Xia only wanted Terry because Redknapp had spoken to him. He spends his waking hours on Twitter pandering to Villa fans and trying to bait Blues. He put up a comparison photo of St Andrews from the early rounds of the League Cup and a sold out Villa Park from Boxing Day. It will work out for the best if Terry edges them closer to financial ruin.

Hilarious that the teams who finished 15th and 19th are throwing £20m at Porto players and trying to sign John Terry, 17th place have just spent over £5m on an unknown Frenchman...

We're haggling to get £500k for Stevie May.

Shows ambition (possibly stupidity) I suppose. Wolves and Bristol City aren't content with finishing 15th and 19th respectively.

Money in football is crazy nowadays, the general concious seems to be if you can't beat them, join them.

Think he was on about Brum mate, but you're right we spend to be better than we are and will continue to do so, but I doubt it'll work with LJ here. At least you've got in a proper manager.

I thought you said Bristol City had 'struck gold' with Lee Johnson?

Dunno why your fans make yourselves out to be skint, your owner is worth just shy of a billion so he could do it if he wanted to. How you're being ran now is how Steve Lansdown always attempted to run us. (I say attempted because even when trying to be pragmatic we were racking up massive debts that he had to then write off.) So in the last couple of years he's just decided to chuck money at the whole thing (stadium, playing squad etc). If you can't beat them join them is his thinking I suppose.

Lazio have allowed Ravel Morrison to train with us. If he has finally screwed his head on it could be a great signing. But can't hold hope looking at his track record. A third of his total appearances have come when he was on loan to us back in 2012/13 :conf:

Not quite how I see it Aaron. Isn't it that he built the infrastructure (probably hasn't finished yet) to enable the club to be more self sufficient? On transfers, a saggie posted on their shite forum that we had spent £12M over the last 3 years and received £18.5 which doesn't include the various sell ons. I have no clue if those figures are anywhere near correct and appreciate wages push us over the line again but I'm not sure the stadium (much bigger crowds, corporate / non matchday stuff etc) doesn't allow us to spend a fair bit more than we did previously, without racking up massive debts?

Hemmings might be worth £700m/£800m but he'll always try and run a tight ship here, it would be great if he threw £2m at the likes of McGeady and gave him £20k a week but it was never going to happen. I like the way were currently being run but we'll always be punching at this level.

Some of the foreign investment at this level is insane, you can be assured at least a few of these clubs will go tits up.

Was Harry his manager at QPR?

He was indeed.

In his previous spell with us it was clear for all to see he had the talent to go as far as he wanted, alas his attitude was/is fucking horrendous as has been shown by his career stats.

If anyone can get a tune out of troubled players then I'd say Harry is up there with the best, but I certainly won't be jumping for joy until Rav starts doing his talking on the pitch.

I don't get the crap we're getting for signing Terry, could it go wrong? Yes. But for £3million, does it fucking matter? We spend £12million on Ross McCormack last season plus wages and look how that went. Yes, he now has a second chance, but the point stands. I'm sure we'll be fine if he does shite, we'll be even better if (as I believe) he does well.

He could turn out to be another Lescott (where hopefully the manager has some sense and drops him in this case), or he could be another McGrath. We'll see.

Thought so.

Harry has obviously seen his training and attitude problems first hand and clearly isn't put off. Obviously feels he can get the best out of him.

Could be a very good signing if he can, you look like building a very tidy side this summer.

He's never actually slept with anyone else's wife has he? The Wayne Bridge thing was tabloid fabrication.

Agree with this. Doubt he'll be up to playing every game, but ability wise I'm sure he'll be up to it.

Linked with Jonas Knudsen, any good? Can't see it now we signed Barry Douglas but we're linked with anybody and everybody at the moment.

Should Villa have invested the £3m of Terry's wages on 3 to 5 other good Championship players? It could be the difference in making the top six or finishing mid-table again.

He's OK, average Championship full back. Given the money you're throwing around, you could do better.

Cue me sounding arrogant, but I don't think that's the issue.

We need a couple of wingers, a keeper and someone to back-up/replace Jedi and we'll be looking at Top 6 any way. We have/will have the money to do that regardless of Terry, Veretout and Gil are both expected to be sold soon, whilst Tshibola, Richards and Cissokho are also on the market, that money with the extra (it's not £1million despite what the papers have been spouting) will more than cover what we are likely to spend on that. A line-up looking like this:

Bunn
De Laet Chester Terry Taylor
Jedi
Hourihane Lansbury
Adomah --------------------- Green
Kodjia

should be looking at top 6 regardless, and that's without any more new signings added. That is, imo, the best team we can field, and should be looking at being up there without additions, that's not to say as we don't need any.

I wasn't intending to give Villa 'any crap' Jase, just questioning the reasons for the signing. As you say, £3M isn't a great amount for Villa as it might be for the rest of us. I just don't see the logic of paying him whatever he's earning when he's on a downward spiral, that's all.

George Boyd signs on a 2 year deal from Burnley, great signing on a free transfer. Bags of experience, runs around a lot but also plenty of quality, very much a Carlos type winger. A lot of Burnley fans are a bit disappointed he's left, still think we could do with a bit of pace but great start to our dealings. According to Nixon we are also in for a right back.

That's assuming that Villa can offload them all, plus McCormack, Kozak, Agbonlahor & Sanchez. It's a team that looks decent on paper but they are mostly the same players that just finished 13th in the Championship.

And you were happy with the decision to sack Gary Rowett when you were 7th - swings and roundabouts.

That's assuming the 3-5 don't have a transfer fee to pay as well though.

McCormack is supposedly getting a second chance, Kozak has been released, Sanchez has been sold, and Gabby is in the last year of his contract and has a 745,451st chance. It's a team with a year (6 months for some) of playing together now too rather than being hastily thrown together. I'm far more confident this season than I was last.
