Loads of people linking Wolves with Afobe, although he has travelled hasn't he? Not seen anything concrete about it though just twitter reporters linking to vague articles.

Yes, Afobe is quite regular and important for us. Of course that doesn't stop Wolves or anyone else from trying to tempt him, though we'd want good money. Suppose he doesn't exactly fit the profile of their current recruitment through Mendes.

Rumours we are preparing to counter Derby's bids for Lawrence and Jota, they want Forestieri still and have been laughed at.

Bugger off. Nothing to see here.

Besides, Villa are planning to usurp us anyway. That's their method of scouting....sign whoever Derby want.

I thought we just signed whoever's playing well at Barnsley...

Grabban would be available for much, much less than this Oliveira. Grabban hasn't even traveled with with our squad to their pre season camp thing, when several youth have gone instead. Perhaps leaving Grabban here to find a club.
Big wages though I should think Mark?

I'm sure Hogan said similar...
Difference with that one is we wanted to sell him because of his injury record.

Money definitely talks, but it'll be the bid not the wages that'll be the deciding factor if we sell to another Championship side.

Interesting to see you say that as on one of our sites people were looking and his stats and talking about him as a failure at Prem level, I disagreed as 10 goals in a season is a good return for most prem clubs that are the super power top 6, and whilst Afobe didn't get that he is roughly about 11 goals in 40 games isn't he? Which is roughly about there ratio wise.

We only have money to spend as we have new Chinese owners, and have spent the last couple of years cutting costs due to losing Parachute payments. Even then it seems we will only make 1 or 2 decent signings.

Grabban was ok but would cost just as much as Oliveira without anywhere near as good record, and much older.

We have a young midfield and defence but nothing upfront and in goal. So I think we will make two 3m+ signings in those positions

You have a cracking song though. Defend the honour of Reading. Or something.

It leads to the question, how on earth do Preston and Barnsley manage to prosper on a budget (fair play to both) and how do Burton survive? There are obviously ways of doing things differently but the money currently being spent in this division is obscene and surely cannot be sustainable?
Would you go back for Grabban maybe?

£15.8 million for a defensive midfielder? Obscene? Surely not. Yam yam yam.

His scoring record is reasonable, maybe not outstanding, and maybe not as good as it could be if he didn't always miss a few chances before he scores. But ok.

There's a bit more to Benik than just his stats, just being a handful is useful for others in our side. His touch and passing has improved here I feel too, because he can't get away with just goal hanging in the PL.

The only concern for me would be that Afobe needs to start games. He's always poor off the bench. If Defoe reduces Afobe's role to being a sub more often, then that's unlikely to work. That might depend on whether we keep hold of Josh King.

By doing what we're doing currently. Taking punts on the best players in the Irish league and hoping they pay off. It's the only way we can do it while we have Hemmings as owner (which is fine by me).

Quite excited by the signing of Sean Maguire, especially after his Europa league hat trick the other night, but he'll probably be the next Graham Cummins or Andy Smith.

We've also got 3 or 4 players currently that are worth £5mil+ in today's market so if all else fails, sell them all and just buy Nugent back or something.

It's been a busy day for us on the transfer (rumour) front.

Richard Keogh to Birmingham: Well, it's something I sincerely hope is just paper talk and not entertained in any way. In our squad prior to sales, I said the players leaving that would have had the biggest impact would be him, Ince & Martin. I don't doubt he could be replaced, but it would be difficult and takes the 'footballing centre half' out of the pack.

Tom Lawrence: I knew he had a good season at Ipswich and after watching a couple of snippets, it's plain to see that he has a lot of ability. He's as quick with the ball as he is off it. He's got really fast feet and can change direction at a drop of a hat. Most importantly, he's quick at getting a shot off and hammers it. It looks as if he's a very good replacement for Ince, plus he looks much more of a provider than Ince was - who was effectively a wide attacker. I think what we would lose in goals scored by Lawrence, he could make up in supply to the likes of Nugent, Martin & Vydra.

Jota: I'm not even entertaining this as it seems very unlikely, but I would love to see him at Derby. He's a player that I've always admired in the handful of times I've watched him. No doubt he has the ability to play at a higher level, but I think his minimal impact in Spain recently will leave Premier League clubs with a limit to how far they will go to get him. If we dig in, offer more & give him a lucrative package then who knows.

Tom Huddlestone: This has come from a very good source in John Percy, who has a 100% rate when it comes to us, therefore, I have no doubts there is truth behind it. I would like to see Tommy back at Derby, mainly as cover for Thorne, because I think he has something to offer us. I believe he's still living locally, which would give us a good chance, and he's definitely got 'unfinished business' at Derby after being sold offer for a packet of crisps by a group of men that went to jail over their running of the club.

Overall, I think two wingers and a defensive midfielder is what is required at this moment in time. The defensive midfielder only because Thorne isn't as reliable as we would like, but definitely the two wingers. Providing no daft sales between now and the end of the window, we could just get those three players in and see how we get on in the first month.

If it was that easy Tom, why aren't the rest doing it? There's a lot more that goes on to sustain it, there must be? All credit to PNE and Barnsley by the way.

Ruddy's a good keeper at this level and I think a fresh start will be good for him. He's never quite got back to the level he was before he had two bad injuries and I think without them he would've had more than 1 cap for England. Plenty of baggage for him here so if he can get over that with you then maybe he can get back toward that level.

Shorthand for you wouldn't pay his wages, apparently. Not sure I entirely blame you.

We've also got 3 or 4 players currently that are worth £5mil+ in today's market so if all else fails, sell them all and just buy Nugent back or something.

Both Mick McCarthy and Kenny Jackett used this approach, helped by owner and management who wouldn't let the club trade beyond its means. That didn't go down well with the Commentariat in various forums and newspapers, but it left us with almost no debt and running at a profit.

There was a match two seasons ago when I think 8 out of our 11 players on the pitch had come through our academy. And one other had been signed as a youngster from a League Two club.

I think Brighton and Huddersfield (and maybe our promotion to PL in 2009) show that it can be done without the big spending.

We have four former academy players around our current first team (well I guess that's before our big signings and Ikeme's bad news): Ikeme, Batth, Price, Enobakhare. Then a further three who came to us from lower division as teenagers: Hause, Iorfa, Evans. I think Nathan Byrne and Jed Wallace could have achieved at Wolves but have now gone. Former academy players David Davis, Wayne Hennessy, Sam Winnall, Scott Malone, Mark Little and Stephen Gleeson are all in the Championship and then there's people like Sam Vokes, George Friend, Surman, Kightly, etc who all came to us early in their career and escaped. I am cheating a bit because that list of players is over a ten year period, but it suggests that talent is there.

You don't have to spend the money, but it usually helps not only to get into the PL but to stay there. I'd love them to do well but I think both Brighton and Huddersfield will be back down after next season.

I think clubs benefit immensely from the investment in an academy, in a professional scouting network, insistence on value for money and owners prepared to invest for the medium term. Wolves and plenty of other clubs in the last few seasons have seen owners willing to throw huge sums of money, effectively putting it all on red. We've just paid £16 million for a kid who played just six times last season. Bluntly, we don't have a good record of signing foreign players.

There is a middle ground though right? It's not option a) make a profit using youth lads or b) spend 10s of millions on risky imports.

It must be possible to increase spending to a medium amount, looking at good players from the level below and then coaching them for a couple of seasons. And maybe picking some from the same level when the chance arises (although I appreciate that's becoming harder and harder in the championship with the fees demanded). There's no surprises at lining up against a Mick McCarthy side on a cold Tuesday night with those. You know they'll do ok, and all for the sake of high 100s of thousands or lower millions. There's got to be more Charlie Daniels, Callum Wilsons, Matt Ritchies down there?

I release that in Wolves' case, it's different. This whole project with Mendes to give his portfolio a shop window etc, League One isn't really going to be of interest. But just broadly speaking.

finally the Samu Saiz signing should be happening today, aLeeds fan in Malaga snapped a picture of him boarding the same plane to Leeds-Bradford airport

quite excited by this signing, we've beaten off some LA Liga clubs (obviously not the top clubs) Eibar were very interested in him, and some Spanish reporters were saying he was 1 of the top players in Segunda last season

don't know where this leaves Hernandez though same position and we won't play both, nice to have back-ups though

That was definitely a big factor. We have several players earning more than their worth and with Ruddy's contract running out it put him directly in the firing line.

Jordan Amavi has failed a medical with Sevilla ahead of a proposed move from Aston Villa, according to Estadio Deportivo.

Former France Under-21 international Amavi, 23, was due to join the La Liga side on a five-year deal.

I can see this one working out in Villa's favour in the long run.

Glad you can, I'm pretty certain we were relying on that £9million for further reinforcements.

If you keep him this season he'll be one of your best players next year and will go for more than £9m in the future. Not the most outlandish claim when you were talking about rejecting £20m+ bids for him in January though.
