I think you (your club, not specifically yourself) overestimate your players a bit too much.

Please do point out where this has happened in the past to back your point up.

I think most see it as we understand that there is a market premium on English talent within the top two divisions. We buy players with significant potential and then put an awful lot of effort into developing them. Tarkowski, Hogan, Gray, Jota, etc. we paid small amounts for them and stood our ground when it came to bids for them. We got what we wanted - largely, anyway, as Burnley took the naughty route and bid for Tarkowski on the eve of playing us - and we've received significant fees for them.

We've not had a player sulk and throw their toys out when we've turned bids down and they've not joined a new club. So interested to hear your thoughts on which of our players your opinion related to.

Rejecting £10m+ for a defender who has played 21 games in the 2nd tier suggests you do vastly overrate your own players. For what I've seen of his few apperances he doesn't even look at good. Was ripped apart and Molineux in Jan and never looked all that good on TV games either. It seems to be a growing trend in this country that young English players are massively overvalued, it's no wonder why teams are starting to get better and cheaper alternatives abroad.

Wouldn't call it over-valuing.

It's fending off interest or receiving a vastly inflated figure if the buying club gets desperate.

If he's as good as Brentford think then Bournemouth may stump up the cash, or they will get an extra year's football out of him and still sell him for a higher amount further down the line.

If Bournemouth are willing to bid over £10m for him then they can afford an extra £2m, if they want him that badly. Especially as its early in the window.

How dare Brentford stick a high price tag on their player to ward other clubs off! Who do they think they are! Imagine not wanting to sell their own player unless they recieve a figure that’s impossible to turn down. Honestly the cheek of it!

Oh and on a serious note, if Mepham turns out to be another Mawson/Stones then he’ll be worth 40m+ in a couple of years and 15 million will be considered a bargain. Bournemouth know exactly what they’re doing.

I think the opposite - if we reject an £8.5m bid for a player with 12 games in January, then that same team return a few months later with a £10m bid, I think that it's quite clear to all that we don't overvalue him one bit. The fact that Bournemouth have returned with a higher bid shows that we were correct to turn down their initial offer and that his value is rising. I take it you've never been involved in a negotiation? Our ability to squeeze every single £ out of our transfer sales is second to none in this division. Of course, there's a premium on young English players, but we know that only too well and it guides our transfer policy. We've had two of our centre backs in recent years go on to represent England in 2018, so we're keen to make sure that the next talented UK centre back that we produce goes for an awful lot of money (or we keep him).

Although, you're probably quite correct that the two games you've seen him feature in qualify your opinion as more relevant (and indeed accurate) than a host of Premier League scouts who've been tracking him for a couple of years... and who've bid many millions of pounds for him.

The fact that you're basing your opinion on a player's ability having seen him play just twice says quite a lot :)

The interesting thing, which markwwfc1992 will find most displeasing, is that the £10m bid is a long way off what we'd accept by all accounts :ohm:

Key word being if. Just as likely he could turn out shit and be playing in L2 in a few years. You can't really say a player will be worth 40m because he's played a handful of games for a mid table 2nd tier club.

I've seen him more than twice, but he's played a grand total of 21 games so I don't think anyone has really seem much of him. He hasn't exactly set the league alight with his commanding defensive perfomances enough to judge he is worth such a vast amount of money. It's not just Brentford I'm getting at here, it is our culture of overvaluing our players overall. It's why you will hardly see any British players play abroad.

No doubt if Chris Mepham was from... I dunno.. Albania playing for FK Partizan Tirana, he'd probably cost 1/2m maximum.

I think if there is a club who’ve bid for him in consecutive windows for large fees, we can’t be the only ones “overvaluing” him.

Agree, the prices being paid are mad. Forest just signed a guy who’s only played 7 games for £13m. But I don’t think we are worse at it than anyone else, we’ve sold plenty of players for big fees.

Good that you are basing your whole opinion off the one game you saw him play though. If you’d watched him more you might know he’s Welsh not English, and has even got Senior caps for Wales now.

Wales capping him, Bournemouth bidding big money, and us rejecting that, has got to be some pretty compelling evidence that he’s a good player, no?

Think Henderson will sign here on loan this week. If there's no view to a permanent I won't be impressed with that one.
Just signed for the season at Sheffield Utd, happy days.

We’re not saying he’s worth £40m, we’re saying he’s worth more than £10m.

I do agree with you, British players are massively over-valued, but that’s not Brentford’s problem, and we’re certainly not the source of that problem.

I would also echo toshj’s thoughts and say that with players like Tarkowski and Mawson going through our club, we’ve got some decent players to compare him to, and must have a decent eye for what makes a CB good or not?

He was born in London. He may represent Wales but he isn't Welsh. Besides it doesn't take away the fact that as a country we are overpricing our players. Also I read he made his debut in the China cup or something playing along side a defender from Bristol Rovers... I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

The key word being 'if' - isn't that the same for any young player. It's a gamble, and you hope they live up to their potential? Part of the cost is how good you (both the selling and buying club) think the player could become?

Good scoop.
Wasn't a scoop it was what was reported yesterday, that we were close to signing him because Stoke weren't looking to bring in a keeper until Butland is gone.

He’d only been linked with Sheff Utd for about a day or two after being linked with you lot all summer so far. I’m guessing he never wanted to join you probably due to location. Sheffield a lot closer to home than Bristol.

Dean Henderson is absolutely mint, he’ll easily play in the Premier League and I dare say England.

We definitely wanted him permanently by the sounds of things but as I said this morning I wouldn't want him here on loan unless there was a view to a permanent as I think we could get a better keeper here on a contract but we'll see mate.

Good signing for United, definitely an upgrade in the keeping department, luckily they won't have him any longer than his loan spell.

Henderson is unreal, pulls off absolutely incredible saves and commands his box fantastically. Also wears his heart on his sleeve every game. The save he did for us away at Carlisle was just ridiculous. Well done Sheffield Utd for getting him.

Agree with jj, if we were to get Henderson on a permanent I’d definitely want him, but not sure loaning a keeper for a year would be of much benefit to us as a club.

Think we need an upgrade on fielding though.

You can have John Ruddy.

Statistically the best goalkeeper in the division last season. Sad I can't see much of a future for him now we've signed Rui Patricio but he'd definitely be a good signing for an ambitious Championship side like yourselves.

Couple of rumours we're after Ryan Gauld from Sporting, but think it's just people who've picked up random comments from our fan forum
