Now that looks to be a good signing… played 14 times for Germany U21, as recently as 2023. Was linked with Everton last summer as a replacement for Tom Davies but turned them down.

Going to presume he’d be a loan - can’t imagine his wage would be any less than £20K/week at Mainz and probably worth at least £5M to sign permanently.

As for Doughty and Mengi, I too suspect we’d be tested in the next week or so for their services. But we’d need to receive about £35-40M combined to let them go.

You at times need to take a step back and realise what you are saying.............You would not pay 5m for a top quality young German who plays/played regularly for a talented top, top International team and baulk at his 20k wages then say you would want 35-40m on two players who are decent but no better than that in a top Championship club and who you will be paying way more than 20k a week

all the rumours down here point to us signing ----
Austrian GK from the top flight out there. Nicholas Schmid costing around 400k - left out of their squad at the weekend - follows us on instragram lol
Harvey Blair - young winger from Liverpool 4 year deal
Tino Anjorin back on loan from Chelsea - Was really good last season when he wasn't injured!
Daniel Jebbison on loan from Bournemouth. Played in the prem for Bournemouth first match of the season
Australian Central Midfielder - No clue who yet, but we've been linked with Aiden O'Neill whos at Standard Liege, and Josh Nisbet who was in Oz, but turned down a new contract. Supposed to be going to Ross Country, but we may have hijacked the deal - he's 5ft 3" so not sure he'd be able to surivive against most of the champ midfielders..
George Edmondson on loan from Ipswich

Officially signed Liam Walsh. If it’s just him then you have to say that’s really not the sort of signing we are looking for but if signed with another player (like Krauss or of similar type) and Walsh is going to be a rotational, back up option then it’s sort of fine.

Dont think it particularly raises our overall level though which is disappointing.

Doesn’t sound to be any better than what we already have, but I guess we need to have some level of depth in that area. I guess he is a straight replacement for Berry but younger.

Well we’re just about to splash £10M on a defender, so maybe the club are starting to understand this too. As I’ve said before, fees inbound + TV + parachute payments = over £60M to spend.

We are not letting Mengi and Doughty go for less than maybe £30M-£35M combined. We have no reason to sell. The market is crazy at the moment. Doughty has been a little bit pony since Christmas but had 10 goal contributions last season and was in the top 20 for assists (1 fewer than Rodri). Mengi also got in the England U21s last season

Sounds like this Krauss guy has fallen out with his manager, but he cost €5M a year ago.

Been around a bit but barely plays anywhere so that’s probably why! His injury record is shocking, at 5’6 I’m really not sure it suits us that well, especially as we ourselves have shown not much ability to keep players fit.

Sounds like Heckingbottom will be looking to add a couple to the squad. Loans I imagine.

A CB is 100% needed but we also lack a proper target man in the squad with Ched Evans no longer an option.

Easily the best rumour and potentially to strangest move. Abdoulaye Kamara signing from Borussia Dortmund. 19 year old 6ft 4" midfielder was at PSG academy, then moved to Dortmund. Wanted by Juventus, is apparently signing for us!!! Sound like he's had trouble with injuries, but if we get him fit he could be a start in the making. If not it'll be another freddy adu type!!

Seems everyone is going abroad this year, more talent at cheaper prices than League One. It'll end up with the best L1 players just running their contracts down and even less money filtering into that league.

Norwich spending 10 million on Ante Crnac - a striker from the Czech Republic apparently.

I think its due to the work permit new policies. Your allowed 5 who don't fit the criteria hence we've now got potentially. Farrell from Australia and is an ozzie, Schmid from Austria, Kamara is from Guinea and Sorenson from Denmark means we have 1 left.

West Brom supposedly want Will Keane.

I'd want a good fee for him if it's legit. 13 goals last season, 12 for Wigan the season before, often not playing as an out & out striker.

Luton have completed the signing of Mark McGuinness for a "significant" undisclosed fee.

As above, pleased we’ve signed a defender it was needed, unsure if this was the one to splash the cash on but willing to be wrong on that.

Hopefully not a sign Mengi might be off

If we keep everyone that we wish to keep and sign Krauss tomorrow, think that still leaves at least one slot open. Would like to see another forward signed perhaps on loan which may then allow Taylor and/or Woodrow to move on.

Potts would be a good signing, liked him at Wycombe last season.

I think we seem to have given up, we haven’t had a new link to a player in almost three weeks. Nothing genuine anyway, with the club reaffirming that it’s just the loan market for us now. We already have two in Yates and Ozoh, suspect that leaves us with 2/3 coming in at most.

We must be the only side to get promoted from League One and go into the season with a smaller squad than the one we had. Bold strategy.

Jonathan Rowe has signed for Marseille on loan from Norwich, with an obligation to buy. Total package £17M. I presume it includes some sort of loan fee, but that is pretty poor business considering they won’t be able to spend the money until 2025! The player himself had refused to play to force the transfer through.

This is exactly how Paul Warne used to operate with Rotherham.

It was felt here that he doesn't particularly like the problems that a large squad and big egos can bring.
Essentially he prefers to not rock the boat and try to keep everyone in his squad happy.

Of course, it may be BS but he rarely tapped into the Chairman's money and ignored a lot of the deals offered up by the recruitment team.

Since he left Tony Stewart stumped up over a £million for Nombe £1/2 million for Tiehi and money was always available during Matt Taylor's reign.

Although we haven't paid any fees so far this season, money has been found for 14 new players, agents fees and of course loan fees.

A club like Derby with 30 odd thousand fans won't have too much trouble attracting players if the wages paid are comparable with other Championship clubs.
You have to look for other reasons why there hasn't been much activity?

We are being linked with another CB from Belgium this time called Nathan Ngoy

Adding that up with Palace selling 2 centre halves of their own, think that might add up to Mengi being off. Let’s hope for big money at least

Mad to think of the combined fees our ex-loan players have gone for recently.

Sepp Van Den Berg off to Brentford for £25m,
Cameron Archer was £18m to Sheff Utd, £15m back to Villa, then £15m to Southampton,
Anthony Gordon for £60m,
Tom Cannon for £8m,
Alvaro Fernandez for £6m,
Lukas Nmecha for £11m,
Liam Delap for £15m.
Stephy Mavididi for £6m

We should be high on the list for sending loan players to in this league.

I'm fully in favour of loan clubs getting a 1-2% development fee.... :sl:

Warne has been aggrieved by the lack of business, so I don't think it's on him. It's ultimately led to an interview today where he has said that he isn't confident that we are able to do what we need to in transfer window with what little time we have left. We've missed out on a number of 'top targets' but obviously who and why are a mystery.

The only one that we found out about, very much after the fact, was Willum ]Willumsson who joined Birmingham for £4m - a fee that I suspect was far too rich for us in our current situation.

There is somewhat of a crisis meeting at the club today to go-over an approach both budgetary and otherwise for the last week of the window. Warne wanted 12 new players and we have signed 7. Six new players, which considering we released/lost 12 from last season's squad is far from ideal.

To run a club of Derby's size in League One meant Clowes was having to plug a £10m financial gap per annum. I expected him to scrap the category one academy and all the associated costs of it, instead he's doubled down and pumped more money in the infrastructure and academy which is great, but ultimately the revenue is earned by the first-team and they aren't up to much. The likelihood is that we get relegated and he goes back to picking up a £10m tab in League One to stand still and we have another summer of rebuilding the club.

The players we've brought into the club have all shown promise - it's not a knock on the quality we have brought in BTW. It's just nowhere near enough. We also probably have a squad that is hugely susceptible to injuries which I'm sure will cause us problems. The smart money would be on us to get relegated. I anticipated a very different summer, largely based on the investment that's gone into academy and infrastructure, largely due to the players we allowed to walk out the door or didn't extend, I didn't think the first-team would be working on a budget as limited as it is.

In all seriousness, you’re right though. Preston have invested a lot of time and effort developing these players on behalf of their parent club. Yet they’ll see no upside.

I don't know how true it is for the rest of them, but Delap blossomed into a £15m player with us, not during his time with Preston.

No need for tears.

Anyway. I was being tongue in cheek about the development fee, it'll never happen. Every loan move plays a part in a player's development, so even though Delap shone at Hull, his time at PNE & Stoke were still valuable in his football education.

So on that basis, it'd be impossible to work out development compensation based on a club's contribution, just the time spent at a club.

It can also be said that Prem clubs are doing us a favour by loaning us their young talent in the first place. We've certainly never paid a significant loan fee for a player.

It's a nice idea but just zero chance of happening.
