As bad as Sunderland are at the minute I still think it's an attractive job to many managers. A huge stadium and potential fan base if they get it right, they could easily be an established Prem club again in a couple of years.
Anyone in a job with security would be foolish to take it, as Grayson has proven.

That's a big if though.

It seems Sunderland haven't been able to shift all the deadwood that was in the squad following last season (the likes of John O'Shea, Jack Rodwell and Billy Jones are still there) which is understandable as half the squad was utter deadwood when they came down. This is proven by a drunken Darren Gibson's rant in pre-season. This season, by the looks of it, was almost inevitable, however to be second from bottom is still pretty awful even in the circumstances.

Off the top of my head I can't really think of anyone who would turn this around (but as I type this I am half-asleep, so i've probably missed someone), Cotterill would've been a good shout, Pards probably wouldn't take the job and Lambert doesn't seem the type of manager to turn the trainwreck that is Sunderland around. Should Grayson be given until January to turn this around? I'm not sure. Even QPR, who had a squad very similar to Sunderland, were doing better at this stage of the season and eventually finished 12th in 2015/16. On the other hand though, Grayson does have an extremely tough job in trying to fix up Sunderland, and it's unrealistic to expect him to remove all of the dead wood out in two transfer windows, never mind just the one.

Well so much for Grayson being the best Sunderland could get...

Or alternatively they could down the Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest (to name but a few, all big clubs with good potential fanbases ) route and end up in League 1 and have well over a decade struggling to even look remotely like regaining their Premier League status.

Sorry you Mackems, but at the moment I think this scenario looks more likely.

I know all about big clubs going down to L1, we did it remember?

The whole club needs a top to bottom clear out. For example, they still play Gibson in midfield, who openly slagged the club off before the season had started. Players like John O'Shea in defence who are beyond awful, and should have retired many years ago. Infact it seems more alike to the Wolves situation than any of the clubs you mentioned. A double relegation from the prem, lots of highly paid mercenaries and clueless managers. Yes it is very alike to Wolves in 2012/13.

The only people who will be interested in Sunderland are the ones who have fallen stock and see it as an oppurtunity they can't turn down, or a internal man who again can't turn the chance down. There is a real possibility they'll be in League One next season with massive debt and no money to spend, probably playing in front of 15,000 fans in a 45,000 seater stadium.

Yes but all the other clubs had a sustained stay in League 1 or even 2 visits and have been away from the PL for over a decade.
Wolves only had 1 season in league 1 and won't be out of the PL for a decade.
I see Sunderland being away for a long time unless something drastic (ie millionaire owners) happens.
More akin to the other teams clubs mentioned and your last sustained absence from the top flight than you this time round.

Where are the Sunderland fans?

Pardew 100% wouldn't take it. Lambert may but I doubt he'd do any better. It's just an absolutely poisonous job.

You'd think Lambert would have had enough of poisonous shit owners dragging their club downwards by now though...

I could include Steve Morgan but I believe that would be harsh, Wolves fans may disagree with me. :dk:

Morgan had a good heart but he isn't really made out to be an owner of a football club. I think he donated more money to different charities around the world (something he still does) than he did invest money into Wolves. He left the club in such trival circumstances, had an argument with some drunk Wolves fans away to Preston in Deepdale's carpark. 24 hours later he put the club up for sale.

Also Fosun were in charge when we appointed Lambert.

Fair enough, I thought Lambert came in at the end of the Morgan era, my mistake!

As unimaginable as it would be for Sunderland to go down, it is beginning to be hard to pick 3 who will go down instead of them as there is now a fair gap between them and most other teams.

starting to look like 3 from Sunderland, Bolton, Burton, Birmingham, Barnsley, Reading I would say. Possibly Hull but can't see that myself.

One could have said the same about Cardiff last season but they ended up midtable. Birmingham City who almost got relegated last season were 4th last year around this time.

As bad as we were for the first half yesterday I still wouldn't consider us in a relegation 'fight'. We showed enough in the previous three games (3 goals past Forest, 4 goals past Derby and more than matched Wolves) to show our strength. Last night put an end hopes of recovering for a play-off spot.

No it didn't, you're ten points off with a game in hand over most and still have 87 points to play for.

We won't be getting relegated. Will be comfortable mid table come May.

After last night, I don't think you are far off putting a decent run together

We’re looking dead and buried, routine loss after routine loss, it’s pitifully predictable. Save for a scrappy 1-0 win at the weekend in a dreadful game where we hung on for dear life, we’ve not looked like winning.

Sheff Utd away Saturday followed by Wolves then Fulham will see us bottom for Christmas, I seriously doubt we’ll move from that position for the remainder of the season.

On the plus side there’s a fair few grounds in L1 I’ve not been to for a long while, every cloud...

Can we have Jota, Colin and Dean back in the summer?

You can have Jota back tomorrow, most underwhelming record transfer since Paul Furlong.

You’ll have to pay half of his wages for us...

Wouldn’t be the first time we’ve brought someone back after signing for someone else. Slightly different situation but Canos comes to mind.

Cotterill once again proving he's a pile of shit manager at this level.

Baffling appointment.

We could yet feature in this thread if we don’t pick up a goalscorer in the window.

Great result today. Effectively 7 points clear of relegation with our GD. Much-needed as our next four games are Villa (a), Boro (h), Derby (a), Wolves (h).

Sell your best players (even the ones that want to stay because you're too tight to up their wages beyond League 2 level), replace with duds, recipe for success in anyone's book.
