On the topic of mysteriously added 'r's...

If you went to a bar in Preston and asked for a curled kerk, what would they give you? A cool beverage or a funny look?
A funny look. As Alty said, it'd be more like corled cork. Although I just say cold coke tbh

Also, I used to think that the north / south divide was officially drawn horizontally along Watford (just north of London) rather than Watford Gap.

Great post, Ian. I agree with you about alleys, although snicket is a good word so I might start using that.

At school, we used to call the game on the left 'it' (inspired, I know) and first football game you mentioned 'Wembley singles/doubles'.

And I think lots of people do think Watford Gap refers to Watford in Hertfordshire.

Wait, world cup singles/doubles? Wembley singles/doubles?

This shatters my world. I have only ever heard of it being called FA singles/doubles.

A guy I know calls/called it World Cup Willy. Which made a lot more sense when I learnt that was the name of the 1966 mascot.

I genuinely don't have a clue what any of you are talking about

This was back when kids went outside and played in the streets. Don't think they ever brought it out on playstation...

Basically Tom, for FA singles:

It's all on all, with like, 8 people. If you score a goal, you're through to the next round... 4 or so go through, and 4 go out. Then those four play where the first two who score goals go through and the other two go out. And then there's a 1 vs 1 final where the first goal wins.

Obviously can be varied based on how many players you have and what not, plus you can make it like 2 or 3 goals to go through, or whatever.

And for FA doubles, it's the same but everybody is in a team of two.

That's FA singles/doubles. All this "wembley" or "world cup" stuff can fuck off.

Just googled it, you're definitely talking about cuppies.

I have literally never heard of it being called anything different and nor have any of my workmates. Fucking weirdos you lot.

Yeah, I'm the same in that I've never known it be called anything but FA singles. Like, in all of my time of playing football and meeting other random groups also playing football and then playing FA singles, EVERYBODY has called it FA singles and nothing else. I didn't even know the game had different names.

What the fuck is this? Has somebody masterminded a system whereby each area of the UK only know the game under one name? Have we just cracked some illuminati code or something? Fuck, are they gonna send people after us?

I'm scared guys.

I tried googling FA singles and all I can find are results about footballers releasing singles.

I guess with Plymouth being in the middle of nowhere it was easier for THEM to get us calling it that without the term "FA singles" leaking out of the city.

THEY are clever.

my workmate from Barnsley has just piped up saying it was called "one man Wembley" when he grew up :(

One man wembley!?

Fuck me. How many names did THEY give it?

Tag (also known as it, tip you're it or tig (in regions of Britain),[1] and many other names[2])

I'm in turmoil here. My world is crumbling down.

Tip, you're it? That sounds ludicrous. What the hell. 'Tag, you're it.' C'mon, it fits so much better. Or 'touch' is fine, as well.
