Portsmouth lads, did you ever feel for one moment that your club would go bang and disappear in its current form?

Yes, definitely. We've had a few winding-up petitions so you always fear the worst.

I'm by no means an authority on this but I believe that plans were in place for a phoenix club to appear at an appropriate level in the non-league pyramid. It actually became quite appealing for a while as a way to finally rid ourselves of the never-ending parade of chancers and asset strippers orbiting around the club. In the end, the company became so worthless that the supporters trust were able to buy the actual club without needing to start again.

I think we came pretty close in 2001, hours rather than minutes until the fans stepped in and saved us from Darren Brown. Still a bit raw for a few clubs as we still got promoted that season despite the points deduction. But he nearly had us ground sharing at Mansfield so he could build houses on the ground. He did a few years porridge for it, but believe he's out and about now. This EFL / lack of accountability and checks on owners isn't a new thing. Luckily we survived that time around, I do fear for Bury and Bolton though from the outside looking in.

I think our fans have considered a similar approach in the last couple of years as the protests grew and we dropped through the leagues. Our debt is unsustainable and we are close to becoming insolvent so I think it is right the fans consider this. The opinion is split massively though, some saying they'd never support a phoenix and others being keen to get it off the ground. If we don;t get back into the FL this season then I can't see anything other than some car crash coming our way

Just thought id point outbthat we are putting out a younger match day squad than bolton at the moment. Maybe we should cancel sunderland away on sat as the lads might be tired.

Yes, several court appearances were bigger events than the games! I was told the judge had liquidated the club at one hearing. I'll be honest and admit my guts nearly went.

League placings might also be affected by teams having a free midweek when their weekend opponents have to play. We play Donny away on Saturday after visiting MK tonight, yet Donny can sit back and relax this week. Last season and our start, might suggest that we might be close together come the end of the season, but Saturdays playing field is slightly tilted against us through no fault of ours or Doncaster.
Or it is tilted against Donnie because they may have a load of games at the season when the likely effect on tire legs could be even greater. I think all sorts of teams could say we are getting a worse deal - say Accrington and their lose of significant income could affect what they can do in January - but I am not sure that is a helpful exercise. Several clubs are getting a potentially bum deal, and engaging in a sort of Monty Python sketch as to has it worse is never going to be resolved.

This match would not have been called off if it was at bolton and they stood to lose 100k matchday takings

It was at ours FFS.

Oh, and as the young players are still all scholars/Academy players, both the premier league reserve articles and EFL articles, both protect the well being of under 18 and under 23 players. So we have broken no rules in respect of health and safety. The only rule broken in not getting approval from EFL and donny to postpone the match

What would happen if an entire squad was U23? Could a side then take the best part of a calendar year to play all league and cup games?

Best course of action is for the FL to expel them now and let them regroup in the North West Counties. Might be harsh on the supporters but how many supporters of other clubs have lost out because of Bolton spending money they did not have.

Manager Phil Parkinson and his assistant Steve Parkins have both resigned, I know some Bolton fans will be glad to see back of Parkinson but I doubt experienced managers like him will be queuing up for job.

Rumour has it that Sol Campbell is very interested in applying for the job with such a well run club.

Only the EFL would allow Bolton to start the season without realising they would be asking them to contravene a rule they wrote themselves...:ffs:

Agree with most of the posts in this thread and is in line with what I posted a week or so back.

The deadline for all of this should've been a week before the season started and then it should have been an automatic relegation this season, a L2 start for the 2020/21 season with L2 promotion places remaining at 4 but only 2 down from L1.

In trying not to make L1 look like a farce by disqualifying two teams before the start of the season, they've made it even worse.

Portsmouth lads, did you ever feel for one moment that your club would go bang and disappear in its current form?

Absolutely. I can remember on more than one occasion in the the recent past where our next match was billed as possibly our last ever.

Our issues from our most recent administrations (two and three) were centred very much around your situation. An owner who was funding over and above what the club could generate itself, accruing debt which was managed until his dad was had his assets frozen and he stopped the funding. The club was then left in the position of having to try and dig itself out of the hole. Historical family feuds meant that buyers owed money buy our owners were circling around the club seeing an opportunity to get a premier league club as collateral from debts owed to them by our owners family, and we were then effectively asset stripped of players by a succession of absolute prize whoppers (one of whom didn't even exist).

Those looking down their noses at you now for cheating, are probably very much in the same boat in reality (Championship clubs in particular). Unless the EFL can ensure that clubs spend realistically and don't rely on a benefactor to give them a competitive edge, then year on year, they'll be another Pompey, Bolton etc, etc. You're only as good as your owner is at staying interested and not wanting their money back.

I can see a lot of our plight in your present situation, and my heart goes out to you and Bury fans.

Our single season in league one (12/13 I think?) in administration, we could not permanently sign players. We could only sign them on week-to-week contracts based on income flow generated by a ring-fenced drip feed of season ticket and match day revenue. We ended up firmly relegated having used something like 50 odd players. But by the last day of the season the supporters trust had bought the club and started its rebuild.

I can't work out how your administrator hasn't arranged for the same to be done at your club? As I understand it, season tickets weren't even offered to fans. This could have generated an income to finance a very cobbled together team on a weekly basis at least.

Best of luck to both you and Bury.

It’s a weird one this, if Bolton get sorted and buy players then the teams that have been smashing their kids 4 or 5 will have had a massive advantage over teams who then face a stronger professional Bolton outfit.

Makes no sense why the EFL allowed them to play and Bury not in that respect.

EFL baring their teeth... their gummy, ineffective teeth..

https://www.efl.com/news/2019/august/efl-statement-bolton-wanderers2/

Caused by the man they said was a fit and proper person to own the club, changing his demands literally at the last minute, and so the takeover was delayed again.

Some of you ask what the EFL could have done, and why are fans of clubs blaming them. They arent fit and proper themselves to run the league, and until we do, te rest of you are at risk of having the same issues as us, Bury, Coventry etc etc etc, no one is immune

Rivalries aside, it is incredible that a club of their size and history can end up in this position. Surely unprecedented in the history of English football and demonstrates just how rotten the game has become.

Just me who thinks that statement is a scare tactic to get the parties to come to an agreement?

Liverpool and Chelsea were in deep poo not so many years ago. As long as huge debts are serviced and/or a new owner rocks up then the issue carries on being ignored. I reckon a fair few Championship clubs are close to going bust.

Seems worrying on paper but I still think the EFL will give them the time they need.

Exactly what we were saying.

Hopefully that turns out to be all it is, but Bolton’s mess and debts actually seem a lot worse than burys to me

Both Bolton and Bury have their 'final' deadlines tomorrow. Given how drawn out this has been for both clubs and the amount of work they and the EFL have been involved in with deadlines, extensions, statements etc it's looking increasingly likely they will make an example of one of them to try and repair the league's reputation - i.e. "this is what happens if your club isn't financially viable, don't test us again".

Weird how Bury looked to be hours away from being kicked out the league, now it's Bolton who look in the most perilous position.

Going to be an interesting day tomorrow but I have little confidence that deadlines will be upheld.

I’d be utterly gobsmacked if Bolton don’t pull through this, even at this late stage.
