3 good signings for the Stones, beating other NL clubs for the players including Barnet who were very keen on Umerah and Tavares.

Umerah’s goalscoring record isn’t great but I don’t think he’s been signed to score 20 goals, his job will be to hold up the ball, cause mayhem in the box and allow the likes of Danny Parish to flourish. I think it’s a smart signing from SM and MS - a player signed by both Gary Johnson and Gareth Ainswoth who are no mugs.

Tavares is a real prospect - Palace U23s captain, made their Premier League match day squad a number of times including away at Liverpool and played for Croatia u20s.

Our squad is shaping up now, with more business still to do. Quietly confident we are going to surprise a few people with the additions of Jack Cook, Andy Elefeteriou, Rhys Browne, Josh Umerah, Matt Buse and Nikola Tavares. UTS

Whitfield moving because of location is the word, sounds like he turned Notts County down despite them offering more money,.

Ah that’s a shame (for us), if his missus is in Manchester as another Stockport poster suggested then can’t really argue with that. I see some Vale and Torquay fans have been a bit triggered by the whole thing, coming on top of Cameron’s move to us. A pity because I would have liked to have seen Whitfield, Roberts and Rodrigues behind Wootton, but we move on!

Tom Whelan has left the club by mutual consent today as expected..

No doubt someone in this league will pick him up, probably a southern based team. Very talented player but found himself out of favour towards end of season behind Mandeville and Clarke

He’s an attacking midfielder isn’t he? If he’s willing to play up north wouldn’t be shocked if we were in for him to replace Earing.

Edit: A quick google search suggests he’s from Liverpool so could be a possibility.

I would take Whelan at ML. Chessie fans online seem genuinely upset at his departure.

Yeah he’s quality, best position is number 10. Goalscoring midfielder with his finishing ability, but lacks a little bit of pace and fitness levels aren’t the best which i think may have been a factor in why Rowe’s let him go

Pretty sure if we wanted either of those players they would of signed. What can you offer that we can’t?

An unsigning but a confirmed one. Tom Whelan has left Chesterfield by mutual consent. Interesting to see where he ends up next, given what happened with Grant Smith he might end up back at Yeovil....

Whelan is a tidy player......definitely a lot better than the shit he came in to replace back in November but i don't think he'll missed as much as some Town fans are making out.

He doesn't seem able to do it for a full 90, you get 60-65 mins out of him then he fades in games. He wasn't getting near the team towards the back end of last season for whatever reason and whilst i am not yet 100% sold on Mandeville, if he performs like he did for the last month of the season then we have ready made replacement already at the club....though the key word there is if!!

If i was Rowe, i'd also be trying to get Rowley out the door. I know he came up through youth set-up and he's still young etc. but he has not improved one bit over the last 4 years, probably gone backwards if anything.

Was there any indication of what fee you paid Weymouth when he signed? presumably not a lot.

Lynn have signed Dan Bowry who played a couple of games for Wealdstone last year - any thoughts on what we are getting?

Really small sample size so I can't add anything about positive or negative about him. He played at right back for us but his most noticeable contribution was being sent off for a pretty bad tackle on a Halifax player. He wasn't seen after that.

Thanks, the press release has him as a centre back and given we already have a first choice right back and another right back/centre half signed on it looks a strange addition but probably not the 'dominant in the air defender' a number of us are looking for.

Rowley is unmotivated for me. Has he ever really done much? He's nowhere near as good as I suspect he thinks he is, agree he's got to go.

Not that upset about Whelan either, his performances dropped off a cliff which he why he was bounced from the squad. I don't like paying fees for players then releasing them months later though, it just looks like mismanagement, we can't afford that. If he asked to leave though, what do you do? Force someone to stay who doesn't want to be here and upset the dressing room? Id sooner let a player go who'd rather ultimatum the manager than try to work his way back into his plans.

First signing of the summer for us. Harvey Gilmour. Can any Stockport fans shed some light? What type of player is he? Position? etc

Tranmere fans said he was an 8/10 but we never really saw him there.

He came with good reviews from Tranmere fans and looked bright in a couple of pre-season appearances but he picked up a medium-term injury at that time and struggled to make his way back in under Gannon.

Rusk played him towards the the start of his reign but mainly out of position on the wing in a 442 and once we changed to 352 he dropped out of the squad and was never seen again.

From the brief bits you saw of him, would you say he's more of an 8 or 10? I presume he will play as a 10 for us. We already have a few 8 options

I would have said an 8 to be honest.

I thought he was alright, he got a red card in one game and I don't think he was seen again. Bit harsh because it didn't look like a red.

I couldn’t say as I don’t think he ever played as a 10 for us apart from maybe one FA Trophy game that I didn’t watch.

It was a wasted year for him with us so Tranmere fans can probably give you a better outlook on him.

Ethan Ross has signed for us. Keeper who was on loan at Weymouth last year. Weymouth were our kryptonite last season so he probably impressed against us. Don't know how far he will push Hinchliffe, hopefully quite well. Hinchliffe been great for us but can let some soft goals from long distance shots. Like the one in the Play off semi.

We’ve just announced the signing of Billy Waters. Any good Torquay fans?

You've got yourselves a good'un in Ethan. Lord knows how many goals we'd have conceded last season, if not for him - some of his saves were little short of miraculous - and he was the Supporters' Player of the Year. I'd have loved to see him back down with us, but he fully deserves full-time football with a bigger and better club.

I want to give you positive things to think about but I must report Billy Waters is one of the most frustrating players I've ever seen in a Torquay shirt. Now, that isn't to say he's bad, in fact I think he can produce moments of absolute quality. Look up his goal against Eastleigh (home) and his goal against Chesterfield (away). That's why he's so frustrating because you think if he could just find some consistency, he'd be a League player. Unfortunately, he often demonstrates the first touch of an elephant, he is the complete opposite of the phrase "great touch for a big man". Also, he has no positioning skills. Also, he can also miss from less than a yard out, like in the Play-off final. (Guaranteed to score a perfect hat trick against us.)

Billy Waters really is an enigma. I genuinely believe the lad has no confidence in himself which is an absolute shame. He burst onto the scene in a terrible Crewe side in League One and run Barnsley ragged twice in the space of a week. We thought we were onto a special player but he suffered a major loss of form and asked to go out on loan. Davis refused to loan him but then rarely played him and slagged him off to the media which was undeserved. Eventually, given he loved ruining our own youth players, Davis released Waters and he seemed to do very well at Cheltenham at this level and in League Two. But a move to Northampton seemed to ruin him and knock him off his stride.

His attitude was good with us, he can be quite injury prone and run out of steam in games from what I remember and he had plenty of ability. But I really do think he struggles to achieve consistency and has little confidence in himself which is why his career has gone the way it has.

Yeah, he was very good down here the season us and Cheltenham got promoted back to L2. I actually just assumed he was still at Cheltenham doing alright until I saw him playing for Torquay in the playoffs.
