Same as most U21 sides we’ve played, good on the ball but zero nous or physical ability against the power of league footballers.

Everyone is taught to be Man City as a kid these days.

The winger Gordon and the polish lad looked decent mind.

They didn’t fancy defending Leggey at that corner when he first came on
Watched a stream of your game looked like men against under 10s lol

Our young side beat Charltons young side 1-0, goal from Paul Smyth after he capitalised on an error from Charltons backline over playing out from the back.

Had to play last 30mins with 10 men after young Anthony Papadopoulos was sent off for 2 yellows, first one was harsh, second one he gave the ref the chance to send him off.

Charlton took their main threat going forward Josh Davisonat half time - he caused us quite a few problems, overall their young side gave a good account of themselves but they lost to silly error and to a team with far, far more nous than them. I don't think they troubled us in the second half, the sending off barely made a difference apart from some pressure for about 10mins.

Group winners and a home tie in the next round, we've been strong at home this season and not let a goal in in this competition yet.

Also 4 clean sheets in a row for us now to help build confidence and great to see Adam Thompson come on and get 20mins after nearly 9 months out with a broken ankle.

2,300 crowd with 760 from South East London.

Ended up winning 1-0 with a 35 yard strike in injury time. Cue a collective celebration from the 575 in attendance that they could go to bed earlier.

Our reserves have just beaten (I believe) Oldham's first team. We started with only one player that featured on Saturday, but most of Oldham's 'bigger' names seemed to be out there. They seem to be in some trouble.

The story of the night for us was the performance of Paul Glatzel, who scored two and got the assist for the other goal. If he continues in that vein, we might have found the striker we have been looking for.

I'm not sure what those Liverpool kids can really take from that. We walloped them without even really having to try. They seemed to have some obsession with trying to play it out from the back but kept getting caught out.

For us minutes in the legs for a few like Walker and Johnson I suppose was a benefit in addition to Jakes performance.
As somebody said earlier they need to bring back a reserve league so these future stars ( future ex players) can learn to play against old arse pros. Most are awful when they come on loan at lower league clubs and experience their 1st proper kick up the arse from an old timer.
Do not use Joss Labadie as a mentor, crying cheat.

Fringe squad/youngsters make up our starting XI this evening. By all accounts, Sunderland have named a strong side.

This could be a cricket score, but it’ll mean fuck all - we’re already out.

That Sunderland team is very similar to the side they put out on Saturday against Mansfield, however they brought on four first team subs on at half time on Saturday.

Crowd at Mansfield tonight was reported as 805 with 44 from Newcastle.

Mansfield’s lowest ever crowd is 800, very convenient that tonight’s crowd announced was above this for the papa Johns sponsors sake.

Crowd didn’t look that many, with only half of the blocks of lower west stand being open to home supporters tonight.

Absolutely zero shame in beating your lowest home crowd in this tinpot competition.

Indeed. Apart from the true tinpotters who will have had more than a few games in front of two fans and a lost sheep, everyone’s record low attendance must be in this festering boil of a competition.

Honest question here,,,,,,,,,,,,Many are belittling this cup, i have last season but it is the only way you may see your team in a Wembley cup final in your life time. Is it just the inclusion of u21 teams or are you all against it period.

For me it’s 100% the introduction of U21 teams, possible Trojan horse en route to getting B teams into the FL. For the most part the kids aren’t physically strong enough to compete either.

our match with Leicester U-21's was a pretty dull disjointed affair - not surprising as we made 10 changes from the weekend.

plus points;-
we won and didn't have to endure penalties
Mike Jones played his 1st game for over a year and played 80 minutes before being subbed.
Other fringe players got game time.

negatives;-
George Williams broke his Collar Bone so will be out for a while.

At the other end of the scale, Newport had Kevin Ellison playing last night at 42!

On a side note, he offered Harry McKirdy out after the game calling him ‘a little gobshite’!

One-nil to Swindon was about right. We huffed and puffed and had a huge number of corners but never looked like scoring. Two youth teamers did well but several fringe players too happy to take a breather.

You tried playing out from the back last night - and looking quite uncomfortable doing so at times. Is that your normal style these days?

It is but less so than under Flynn and the first teamers are less likely to put teammates under unnecessary pressure than last night.

We had 2 youth players at CB and Rob Hunt as the third CB, a striker playing RWB and a central midfielder playing LWB. Absolutely stunned we kept a clean sheet. To be fair the two youth CBs didn't look out of place. Dabre at LWB was absolutely terrible, Newport had the freedom of Swindon down our left, tbf Dabre did work bloody hard, having to get back into position all the time mainly mind you.

Your CBs were excellent. We had two defensive midfielders at CB. We beat your left back at will but no end product at all once we'd done that.

Kev was right! Mckirdy is a gobshite, he was when he played for us 2 years ago and nothing has changed since.

I like it, we've won it twice but its become long winded and would scrap the 16 B teams (the games are pointless) and have the top 14 National League sides plus the 2 relegated League Two sides if keeping the group stage.

Or just 64 teams in a straight knock out.

We had two great experiences of winning it (even better experiences getting there by beating Stoke in the area semi's both times!) but its a farce now.

We've got Jake Cain on loan from Liverpool a player Klopp has great hopes for but he is too young to play in our league he gets bullied and knocked off the ball to easily, although he is starting to wise up under the tutorage of big kev.

Just can’t keep it buttoned. Thought by now he’d have learned.

We won it way back when it was the freight rover trophy. Evatt stated that he is going for it this season.
Last season we had one goal[promotion]
If we stay midtable and win this trophy it will be classed as progress.
If Politic Returns and Ameichi loan is extended we may have a run at the playoffs come January then i would not mind if we went out of all the cups

We’re similar with Liverpool’s Paul Glatzel talented youngster but not enough physical strength. Last night he showed signs he might be capable of hacking it at this level two goals and an assist against a relatively strong Oldham side.

Back in the JPT days it was a decent competition, we took 2,000 odd to Plymouth on a Tuesday night for example. It's the kid teams that have ruined it

I like the sound of this replace the B teams with the National sides which surely makes sense? That said, would the prize money drop dramatically if the B sides were withdrawn? Is the presence of the B sides why the prize fund is so generous?

That would be the issue as think the Prem pay £1 Million plus for the prize fund.

It used to have 8 Conference sides in it, we even managed to get knocked out by Scarborough (before 2 months later getting knocked out by them in the FA Cup as well!)

See Harry McKirdy upset Kevin Ellison on Twitter last night!

Still think the competition would be better without B teams and less prize money. The national league side is a good idea but it'll never happen, B teams are here to stay and it's only going to get worse IMO
