I like the 3421. There's a reason why it's been adopted by many managers this season in England and Germany. I reckon it's a good fit for most sides and that Southgate should try it in friendlies. Playing an untested 3421 in a KO game is quite risky.

This is what I think the world cup starting line up should be:

Hart
Jones,Cahill,Smalling,Rose
Henderson,Livermore,Delph
Vardy,Sturridge,Kane
Vardy and Kane to play out wide to accommodate Daniel Sturridge.

Well chuffed for Nick Pope. Charlton didn't realise what a gem of a young goalkeeper we had. He joined Addicks from Bury Town in 2011 and left at the end of the 2016 season but in that time made a total of only 38 appearances in all competitions (and two of those were off the bench..!!). He was never fiirst choice at the Valley, usually being used as cover for injuries and occasional Mickey Mouse Cup ties.

I've enjoyed seeing him flourish at Burnley... ironically, once again, as cover for injury. But he's taken his chance well and an international cap is justified in my opinion.

Good luck to the lad. I hope he starts the match and keeps a shut out for England.

YES I am fucking serious because he has experience as a world class keeper, I would also bring Wayne Rooney back if I could and have him in as a holding midfield.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.

Why leave out Sterling to accommodate Sturridge? Kane in the middle with Sterling and Vardy's pace to scare the shit out of the opposition. And really? Jones ahead of Walker?

He's clearly taking the piss, no sane person would possibly think that is an acceptable team.

Hart is an embarrassment. Pope is statistically the best English keeper this year but in terms of ability, Pickford in number 1 for me.

I like John Stones but not sure if he can start unless it's a back three. Gary Cahill is shite and thankfully isn't involved. Maguire has looked the part but Eric Dier hasn't been impressive this year, Jones will most likely get injured before the tournament. Mawson should be decent back up.

Henderson is bang average but if the alternative is Livermore then he plays. Drinkwater hasn't played regularly enough and Delph has spent most of the season at left back. Yet to be impressed by Alli in an England shirt but he has to start and Wilshere will be injured by June.

These are the weakest England midfield options since i've been alive.

I'd like to see us play on the counter with Vardy and Rashford up front if Kane is playing catch-up fitness wise, once he's fit he has to play despite being utter fucking shit at the Euros.

On that basis

Pickford
Stones, Dier, Maguire
Walker, Henderson, Alli, Rose
Sterling
Vardy, Kane

Aye but it seems that's where Southgate plans to use him.

Wilshere injured in training. He's withdrawn from the squad.

:ffs:
It might increase the chances of Lewis Cook getting a go I suppose.

Turns out The Sun jumped the gun.

He's actually still in the squad with a bit of a knee flare up, Southgate reckons he could play against Italy.

Sturridge has done well at our last two tournaments scoring in each, so he has good tournament experience and as for Jones being ahead of Walker that is because Jones plays for Man Utd whereas Walker only plays for Man City. So therefore he is likely to be more used to the big games.

He's clearly taking the piss, no sane person would possibly think that is an acceptable team.

I'm not taking the piss here mate, it might be an unpopular selection but managers have to take more into account than just players who we think are in form, you have to look at who brings more big game experience and who deserves loyalty from the manager. Jake Livermore is a good example of that, as Southgate has remained loyal and kept faith in him because of his good England performances recently despite West Brom having a poor season.

A back 4 with one of the right backs playing right midfield? Or one of them covering right centre back in a back 3? Looks a mess.

I'm more worried about the midfield to be honest. Oxlade-Chamberlain was an absolute embarrassment the last time he played there for England.
