In my mind this was always going to be the weakest season given that it's based on the two weakest books. Given that things picked up towards the end of the most recent book, I'm hoping this series will be the same.

Having said that, I still think they've dropped a couple of clangers. Having the stupid Missandei/Grey Worm love story instead of something more interesting such as the Greyjoy campaign or the "other" Targaryen story was not a good move and too much of the series feels rushed. Danerys' character seems to be all over the place too, and I don't think it's intentional.
I tend to agree with this. They've cut interesting characters and plotlines for pretty shit ones. Grey Worm and Missandei are so generic and one dimensional there really is no point to it. Bring in Euron, Victarion etc. Although it's still decent TV, the quality drop is obvious this season.

I was really annoyed they killed off Barristan like that too

Well I enjoyed it, Ramsay's scenes were great as always, highlight for me was the dinner scene in the Bolton household.

They could stop with the Dany storyline completely for me, only time it gets interesting is when she gets her dragons out, as nice as her waps, baps, or whatever the cool kids are calling them these days are.

Haha!

Books and (possible) late season 5 spoiler:

Rumours are that Jaime is taking the role of Arys Oakheart from the books which ultimately means we'll see him get killed off! Cast members were claiming that we'll be "heartbroken" by the end of the season and I don't think they just meant what happens to Jon Snow either. So we shall see...

Very good but they're vaguely iberian, not Arabian*

Depending on what era of Portugal/Spain Martin was going for and I don't give a fuck I'm boring myself.

That Greyworm and Missandei scene soured the whole episode for me,
Also this season is the first time I'm further ahead in the books than the show and I'm both enjoying being able to be smug and predict stuff, but not enjoying how noticeable they condense and cut characters out.

Gradually improving, apart from lots of focus on minor characters like Ramsay and Missandei. Or maybe that's just because there was no king's landing or Dorne this episode.

Speaking of dorne, what's Doran's master plan gonna be? Bearing in mind the cut characters.

The fact we got an Oldtown mention from Sam gives me hope for the Greyjoys, at least one of them. Seriously Aeron, Euron and Victarion were so entertaining/hilarious for me when reading the books, it will be a shame if they all get the bullet

Grey Worm/Missandei is the worst part of the show. Not even slightly interested in it.

Season is a bit meh so far, I'm sure it'll liven up a bit soon.

I'm really enjoying everything about this season apart from Dorne, which is just terrible and I almost feel like fast forwarding through it every time it comes on. Just stop this storyline now, I'd have much preferred to have the Greyjoy storyline and Jaime in the Riverlands than this, but only because it is done so poorly, the bad accents, terrible sand snakes and piss poor B movie fighting scenes are just annoying.

Hall of Faces was much better than I had imagined in my head when reading that chapter.
Cersei scene with Olenna was wonderfully done with the great visual call backs to Tywin doing the same before, same shots, same movements, wonderful.
Tyrion and Jorah was a little bit of an obvious padding for extra minutes, but the seen where they are captured was fucking hilarious with the best line in a TV show ever.
Alfie Allen is a terrific actor, wow, just wow.

What I am really enjoying in the show is the Sansa storyline and how it ties together with the battle for Winterfell, and I can't wait to see where they go with it after the end of episode 6, which left me angry, uncomfortable but also hopeful because of how pragmatic and strong Sansa has become - I really can't wait to see what she will do next. I'm seeing a lot online about what happened at the end of episode 6 stopping her character development and making her weak again... which is fucking ridiculous as it has done the opposite. All she did was turn into Darth Sansa, if he turned into Littlefinger 2.0 by putting on a black dress with cleavage, that would be fucking stupid and BAD writing. What they did shows a progression mentally on her part, and she really does feel like a stronger woman for it, I really like Sansa on the show at the moment. (In the books I found her infuriating)

Why does it seem like a lot of other book readers are living in an echo chamber of (D&D YOU SUCK AND YOU RUIN EVERYTHING). Ignoring that they are reaching the end of the books and leading to story lines we do not know of, and are also working off the worst books in the series. I find myself avoiding a lot of GOT discussion threads on boards because of this echo chamber, it's just infuriating. Yes D&D have done wrong things, but this is still to me the best show I've ever watched, and I feel grateful to even have a show that is telling a story from my favourite ever book series.

I didn't see anything in the rape scene that would make me believe that Sansa was stronger for it, or would become stronger for it. It wasn't like Daenerys and Drogo, she was back to being helpless Sansa again. I've no problem with them using dark content like that, but it felt like it had no place in her wider character arc. If they wanted to make us believe that she'd taken a step forward instead of step backwards then they'd have shown hear dead eyed and cold, and bearing it knowing what was to come, not crying and screaming.

It felt like an episode of Scooby Doo when they were both sneaking in and around the gardens, and stumbled upon Myrcella.

But yeah, that one was awful too.

Dead eyed and cold would of been just weird though, this is a girl being raped, losing her virginity in what must be one of the most traumatic experiences of her life. Stone dead eyes is almost as if they're trying to slap the viewer in the face going "HEY LOOK SHE'S STRONG!!!". It's more subtle than that, she stood up to Myranda first of all, saw through her shit and put her in her place, GIANT step forwards. She then faces her fears, gets married, and then surveys the situation in the bedroom. There's nothing she can do, either she takes it, or she protests and gets hurt even worse. She doesn't cry, she doesn't beg - obviously she makes noises, that's partly to show what is happening, and to add realism.

To me it is evident she has gone forwards, it may be steps forwards not leaps, but she is developing and learning to make the most of her situations.

Getting raped doesn't make someone weak. Being afraid or upset during rape doesn't make them weak.

Bryan Cogman (the writer) said this.
“This isn’t a timid little girl walking into a wedding night with Joffrey. This is a hardened woman making a choice and she sees this as the way to get back her homeland. Sansa has a wedding night in the sense she never thought she would with one of the monsters of the show. It’s pretty intense and awful and the character will have to deal with it.”

What the writer thinks is neither here nor there, if he needs to explain the scene then he's already failed. I don't think she's weak for what happened or for her reaction, but if the narrative is supposed to be that she's growing in strength then that scene does absolutely nothing to service that arc, quite the contrary, if anything.

See I'm not sure where you are getting that from, to me it shows a quite blatantly obvious improvement in mental strength and will.
