I can genuinely never remember a more boring off-season for us in terms of signings. A couple of Scottish full backs, a centre back from Crewe and another 1 on loan from Sheffield United, all topped off by a goalkeeper that the Carlisle fans nick named 'lettuce hands'. When you add that to board room issues, no forward players being signed despite this apparently being our 'biggest budget ever in league 1' and bigger than the season when we finished 3rd.
We had fans 'fighting' with each other at the meet the board meeting the other evening, we have a manager who is not only clueless, but tactically naive and idiotic in the media. He has alienated all of his senior pro's except for Adam Chambers who is probably just happy to stick it out and work hard. We have spent the entire summer trying to find 'budget' to pay our young back up Centre back Matt Preston a better wage (his current contract offer from us is being beaten by Tamworth to put it into perspective) only for the board and Whitney to tell us that we have cash set aside for a forward and there's a good portion of budget left? Come monday afternoon Whitney tells us that James O'Connor isn't part of his plans (very steady senior pro, well respected and liked around the club by fans and the club itself) even though he lied and told us he had been injured in pre-season and denied there had been a falling out. This being quite clearly to move the budget around that apparently has a lot more space in it, to bring a forward player in - when we have been told by the board there's money set side anyway?
When you had that to the fact our chief executive used phrases such as 'it felt at right at the time' when questioned about giving Whitney a 3 year deal, then used the term 'naive' when describing his interviews with the press - you can imagine there's not many happy campers at the Bescot currently. The team looks okay in terms of starting XI, but woefully lacks goals, creativity and pace. There's no squad depth and a few of our first XI are either inexperienced, over the hill or constantly injured.
There is dissent from players to managers, fans upset with the board and wanting the manager sacked, we have board room confusion between directors and owner, between fans and directors, between directors and management. All this with a naive 'chancer' of a manager, a pathetic 'squad' and a season that rides on the hopes that Erhun Oztumer doesn't get injured and the thoroughly woeful Simeon Jackson rolls back the years and miracolously poaches enough goals to ensure we win enough games to get 50 points.
It's dire from top to bottom, we have had the worst off-season in the entire division by an absolute mile.
We will go down this season unless we see drastic early change and some forward players added to the squad.
